This was purchased in 2010 without knowing (as I see now) it is listed as Gray Market. Anyway, it performed well as the optics are of quite high quality, never needed any repairs, but was later sold after 8 years of good use and replaced with a newer Nikon f/2.8E version.

Awesome lens with the power to get you close to the shot, a no brainer.

This lens is consistently excellent in terms of sharpness, contrast, and color. I use it extensively for indoor events with nothing more than available light. It elevates routine snap shots to fantastic images. The photo below was shot at 1/200 of a second, an aperture of f/2.8, a focal length of 200mm, an ISO of 2000, center weighted metering, auto white balance, and manual exposure mode on a Nikon D4 camera body.

It was my first time experience to purchase a refurbished lens by manufacturer. This is an excellent quality product in the very good deal for my projects. I would recommend my friends to purchase this product.

Fantstik with a K because it's worth it - this lens is my absolute favorite. The bokeh is stellar, the focus acquisition is intensely quick, the durability is comforting, and the clarity is stunning. I've done shoots in the rain many times; I've taken this lens through the snow of a harsh Montana winter, I've shot beautiful weddings with it, as well as grimy and dirty scenes. It's my favorite.

Very sharp even wide open at F/2.8 and very fast auto-focus. Hopefully Nikon will apply its new technologies to make the future version of this lens lighter

It's heavy and fast. Auto focus is quiet, fast and sharp. The build quality is very good. This is an upgrade from the 70-200mm VR1. Bought the lens with the recent price decrease. I took a picture at a car race and it was night time with outdoor lighting. The VR worked good. Will be using it on a D700 for various sporting events

The day I received this I used it for a VERY large group photo on a D800. The clarity all the way to the edge of the frame was ASTOUNDING. Happy to have a lens that keeps pace with the high resolution images current cameras capture. This purchase replaced the previous generation of this lens. I always enjoyed it...but this lens brings it to a whole new level.

Photography is my passion and Nikon has been my brand for years - from film to digital - but this one is really disappointing. I've been wanting this lens for a long time and finally decided to pull the trigger after doing tons of research. Got it today. Mounted it on a tripod and pointed it at a cell tower about a mile away. Immediately i noticed that the autofocus keeps hunting. What is there to hunt? The cell tower can't move, the lens is mounted on a tripod! [settings: VR turned off, A/M. Aperture priority on D810. Autofocus turned on] If it is just the autofocus, I still would have kept it since I plan to use it mostly for landscape photography. The deal breaker is the image quality. If you look at the 70-200 MTF chart, it is way superior at both 70mm and 200mm than the 80-200mm f/2.8. However, at dead center, the 70-200mm is noticeably less contrasty and less sharp than my 15year old 80-200mm. It is sharper than the 80-200mm on the edge, in the last 2 or 3mm - but who's looking at the very edge of a picture? I am returning this. I'm not paying $2,300 (including tax) for autofocus that doesn't work all the time and poor image quality, which falls way short of the values in published MTF chart. It is a defective product. Maybe the majority of 70-200mm are good but I have lost faith in it.

Outstanding, fast focusing and tack sharp. f2.8 shooting birds in the trees; background completely blown out with the bird tack sharp.

This lens was recommended to me by several people. I rented one earlier this year for a trip to the Monterey coast. I finally bought a refurbished unit from Nikon a month ago. It is sharp, no doubt. The autofocus is sometimes tricky and I need to spend more time to get accustomed to it.

Perfect light, perfect setting, and perfect subject composition usually leads to a great photo. Even simple equipment can acquire a special photo in those conditions. However, how photo equipment performs under "stress" when light, subject matter and setting do not cooperate separates high quality from the rest. This lens is just that: an exceptional zoom lens is true to form when everything is just rights, and works hard for you when everything is not. It is fast to zoom and focus, easy to use hand held (nice balance/weight distribution), produces high quality photos at high ISO and is rugged. The attached photos are not my best by no means, but they were taken at an ISO of 1600, 15 rows up from the ice through the glass for one and protective netting for the other at f 2.8 and 4.0 respectively. It's a work horse lens covering a very useful range (70-200mm) for sports and just out and about.

I have had this lens about three weeks now and I have already used it in a variety of settings—outdoors, in a church, in studio—with terrific results. Focus is quick, bokeh is stunning at wider apertures, and my images are super sharp. Owning this lens has been a "dream" of mine for a long time, and now that I actually have one, it is definitely a dream come true. Thinking ahead to other uses, I am even thinking of a teleconverter to extend my range at outdoor sports events; taking this to f4 (1.4x) or f5.6 (2x) will still be fantastic in outdoor light for things like motorsports, field sports, cycling. I have been a Nikon user since I was a teen in the 1980s, and this is by far the best piece of Nikon kit I have owned; in terms of "love" for a lens, it rivals the 300mm f2.8 that I have rented from time-to-time with great results. While the 70-200 f2.8 is a pricey lens, if you are an amateur/hobbiest thinking about it then save the money, you won't regret it. If you're a pro, like I'm working on becoming, you already know why you want/need this lens. It's worth the investment.

I own the original version of the 70-200mm telephoto lens and use it with a D810. About all I can say is that it is an incredible lens. I take photos of wild life at various distances with VR on or off and the results are amazing. Zooming in during post edit can bring out perfect eyes, strands of fir/feathers, perfect patterns on butterfly wings, etc. I can't imagine that the second version of this lens can possibly be better. This is a great piece of glass and is well worth the money.

I've been a Nikon user and a fan for years. This lens is a bit of a monster, but it is so versatile. It's great, not only for portraits, but slso for landscapes and sports/action events. I'm getting more and more comfortable with the weight.

Hello all, wether you're wealthy and just scanning over a couple of quick reviews or obsessing over this lens like I did, you obviously want to know about this lens. I know that before I bought it I was constantly trying to justify the price as an aspiring photographer at the age of 15 who was lucky enough to get a summer job. I have personally tried the Nikon 70-200 f4, and the Sigma and Tamron 70-200 2.8s. Personally, (and If you're a Sigma user, brace yourself) If you're trying to decide between the 3 2.8s, I would forget about the Sigma entirely. Camera bodies will come and go, but good glass lasts forever which is why it's always best to buy the nicest quality glass, and the Sigma simply pales in comparison to the bad boy on your screen right now. I have had this lens for over a month now and it still does not cease to amaze me. Sure, its pretty big and fairly heavy when you get it, but those things I got used to within a couple of days of shooting with it. The image quality is nothing but the best coming from some of Nikon's best quality glass yet, and the VR works, as expected, like a dream. I was popping off shots handheld at 1/20 racked out at 200mm, and they're still incredibly, unbelievably, stupid sharp. I am totally comfortable taking this into torrential downpour, (obviously with a plastic bag over my D5100, which is by all means NOT weather sealed...) and shoot all day without a worry. I found the sigma's sharpness and VC to be slightly sub-par, and the image quality didn't have a whole lot of contrast. Did I mention this thing grabs focus like a freaking machine? Set it to infinity-5m and you've gone through it's range in 1/4 of a second. Great for wildlife and sports. Now, what it comes down to, or at least what it came down to for me, was this: What made this thing worth the extra $1,000 over the Tamron? and the truth is, not one single thing made me choose this one, rather a multitude of things. Its the many subtle yet obvious edges this lens has over the Tamron that make it an absolute joy to use. Everything about it is perfect in my mind, (then again, that may just be the honeymoon effect still taking place) and I definitely wouldn't trade it for a Tamron and $1,000. Best lens I've ever used. Magical. Bite hard and buy it. You won't regret it for a second.

I purchased new lens a month back and its AFS does not works after 2 weeks. Is it a common problem with Nikon expensive kind lens. I am totally disappointed with this after it happens. Also it was purchased from US and I am working in Middle-east it is very hard to send back to US for repair and too expensive for shipping back to US. It is very bad such kind of expensive lense does not providing a one year international warranty minimum.

As an amateur photographer, with an 80-400mm zoom lens already in my bag, this lens was a purchase of the heart, not the head. Any regrets? None. This lens is superb. While it may be a similar weight and length to the 80-400mm zoom, it is thinner, making it a little less obtrusive. The f2.8 aperture and fast auto-focus are wonderful. The image quality is 2nd to none. The negative, for me, weight and size. I travel almost weekly, and admit hauling a D610, plus a couple of lenses, can get tiring. On those weeks I want to travel light I take a 28 - 300mm lens. It does the job and fits in my carry on bags. Yes it is expensive for a non-professional, but if you are looking to purchase a lens that will give years of service, and thrill you with the quality of the pictures, the 70 - 200mm f2.8 has to be on the list.

This lens was purchased when I owned a D700 and like my other Nikon lenses, was permanently mounted until I switched to D800 bodies. Still my fastest focusing lens, with great sharpness, color and contrast; the vibration reduction feature works very well to reduce motion blur while photographing from my kayak.

OK. I finally bought the lens that I needed and my photos of my daughter in her high school play were what I had always hoped I could capture.

THIS LENS IS GREAT, BOUGHT IT OVER THE CURRENT MODEL TO SAVE MONEY AND AM NOT DISAPPOINTED AT ALL. I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS LENS TO ANYONE THAT IS CONSIDERING IT, REALLY COULD NOT TELL THE DIFFERENCE FROM A NON REFURBISHED PRODUCT. HAVE PURCHASED OTHER NIKON REFURBED PRODUCTS AND THEY ARE ALWAYS A GOOD DEAL.

I'm a committed hobbyist who shoots travel, landscape and the occasional informal portrait with a Nikon D90. I was debating the choice of a lens with more reach and the purchase of a full frame dslr (my budget would not cover both). I already had a Sigma 70-200, but it was slow, blurry and I never got the kind of images I wanted. I wanted to get some better shots of my daughter's dance competitions and some concerts I help produce, so I bought a refurbished Nikon 70-200. Like most of us, I'd heard the "buy glass" advice, but after just one day of shooting I must say, "Wow!" Fast focus. Wonderful bokeh. Sharp when you want it and pleasing movement blur when you don't. Excellent color rendering. The VR is working very well. I have a lot more to learn about shooting with this lens, but can't wait to get started. The lens is a great complement to the 28-70 2.8 that I already have, and I think I'm well-positioned for the time when I may want to upgrade to a full frame sensor. I'll try to update this review as I get more experience, but this has been a powerful learning experience for me. The build of this lens has gotten good reviews, but I can't comment on that yet. I've been burned several times on refurbished equipment.Adorama has always been superb about handling those warranty claims. Nikon, less so -- it provides the service/replacement, but Nikon's claim processing system is a nightmare. This unit has been fine so far. Downsides to the lens: weight, bulk, & cost. For most of us regular folk, this is a very serious commitment.

I read a lot of reviews about various lenses. Ken Rockwell's site was very helpful. While I agree that as a non-professional I would be happy with the VRI version - but I love this lens. On the day I got it, I took some pictures of my 1 year old daughter - and they came out amazing. She'll be seeing a lot of this lens in the next few decades!

I use this lens on my D7000 for landscape, sports and wildlife. Superb lens, fast, sharp. It is a bit heavy, but I'll take that over cheaper quality any day. I have only had this lens a few weeks but so far very satisfied. It is a refurbished product, so far I see NO difference between it and a new lens. Time will tell, for now believe refurb is the way to go; why spend the extra bucks for new box.

FAST FAST FAST! Superb upgrade in the VR, Great optics and perfect AF for sports (though for kids and brides)
By Irak P.
I previously owned (and reviewed) the 80-200, but I upgraded to this lens a couple of months, and I've shot like crazy since then, lets start: The pros: Impecable performance of the AF, absolutely dead on, if you get OOF images it might be a selection point issue, I mean, if you select the 21 point AF-C setting (like the one on D700 and higher bodies) it is easy to get what you meant in focus, if it is not you may try with 9, because quicker bodies like D4 and D3s the average of hits of in ...

Features Nikon's Vibration Reduction system, enhanced to compensate for image blur caused by hand shake and also shake caused by movement of the photographer such as riding in a car or aircraft; the compensation can handle shutter speeds about three times slower than one might otherwise use without VR technology. The lens also incorporates Nikon's exclusive Silent Wave Motor (SWM) Technology for very fast, accurate and nearly silent focusing plus compact, lightweight design for easier handling.
In addition the AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8G IF-ED lens includes a selection of Nikon advanced technologies such as Manual/Automatic mode, Extra Low Dispersion glass (ED), and G-Type design (aperture control exclusively from camera body).
Offered exclusively in Nikon's AF-S optics, the Manual Automatic mode (M/A) allows for instant switching between autofocus and manual focus, virtually eliminating lag time in the transition and enabling photographers to make a last minute adjustment, even if the autofocus system has locked onto the subject.
This performance is complimented by Nikon's Autofocus Tracking with Lock-on(R), a technology that will enable the system to maintain sharp focus even if the subject is momentarily obscured from view, or if the camera's AF sensor momentarily moves off the main subject.
Extra Low Dispersion (ED) Optical Glass is a high quality, low dispersion glass that enables superior performance from this versatile, compact lens. Through low dispersion characteristics the lens' color performance is enhanced by virtually eliminated secondary chromatic aberrations that are common to telephoto optics that do not include ED glass; this technology enhances image quality with added visible sharpness and contrast to the image.
The G-Type feature is designed for the newest Nikon SLR models, including both 35mm and digital, all of which feature a built in Sub-Command Dial, from which aperture control is possible. The design facilitates better lens handling, and helps photographers keep a more positive grip on the camera as they use their right index finger to adjust aperture. This firmer grip and excellent balance will help photographers get sharper images, even as they adjust exposure and quickly shoot their pictures.
Distance Technology (included in D-type and G-type Nikkor lenses) provides precision distance information from the lens. This information is incorporated into exposure calculations for both ambient light and flash illumination, as well as combinations of both. The distance information enables more precise calculations, leading to improved exposure control.
The AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8G IF-ED is fully compatible with all Nikon SLR models that include a built-in aperture control Command Dial. It will also operate using Shutter Priority and Program Mode operation in many Nikon models that do not have a built-in aperture control.
