At Adorama we recognize the importance of supporting our fellow photo and film community, and in that vein we are proud to have sponsored Emmy winningfilmmaker and professional surfer Cyrus Sutton with a Sony Alpha a7S Mirrorless Digital Camera. Sutton will be finishing up his film, Island Earth, in the next few months. In the meantime, he was kind enough to send us some beautiful images he captured using his new camera.
As a documentary producer, marketing consultant and professional athlete I’m always pretty busy. I’ve tried to organize and simplify my life so I can be as productive as possible while staying mobile. I moved into my large Sprinter van and pay way too much money to Verizon every month for this purpose. Aside from servicing the companies I work with and making a documentary about sustainable agriculture in Hawaii, I’m also helping to launch two new companies. After a meeting with a potential investor/advisor in San Francisco I decided to take the long way back to Ojai and go through the Sierras to explore some new places.
Growing up with a fly fisherman dad who loved fishing small rivers and streams we spent most of our time in the same places. When I was 20 I wanted a challenge and hiked most of the John Muir Trail. While that was stunning, there’s literally thousands of vistas and snow fed lakes I haven’t seen. I ended up findingsome new spots that I’ll probably throw in the mix when I’m taking my kids up here someday.
The High Sierras have their own climate. While the rest of California is hitting triple digits, it’s a cool seventy degrees here. The weather has been challenging at times however with afternoon thunderstorms making things wet and hair raising. I saw lightning strike a nearby mountain peak and shoot rocks out where it struck. Twenty seconds later small balls of hail poured down from above and roared across the meadow.
I’ve spent most of my days walking with 30 pounds of equipment on my back stopping only to eat a snack or snap a photo. This new mirrorless Sony A7s is so compact that it fits in my pack well and the full frame still and video capabilities are great especially at night. There’s no cell phone reception up here so my mind is unwinding. The walking and the quiet is also helping me sleep well at night. After a week I’m starting to feel a new level of alertness. Like waking up for the first time in a long time.
