The EOS R5C is a compact, lightweight hybrid camera that’s built for videographers. It uses many of the video formats and features of the Cinema EOS line. It also has many of the still imaging features of the EOS R5. Filmmakers, journalists, and amateurs can unlock their creativity with the EOS R5C, a cost-effective 8K, 4K, and FHD video camera. The EOS R5C camera’s 45 Megapixel full-frame CMOS imaging sensor drives the camera’s outstanding image quality, which is also responsible for its 8K/60P RAW cinematic video recording capability.
Video Specs
As compared to the Canon R5, the Canon R5C has some improvements to the specs and resolution. Here, Canon has reached a new level with 8K up to 60fps and unlimited recording. With the introduction of an internal fan, users will be able to keep the R5 from overheating. As well as recording in RAW or Canon RAW Light, you can also record in 8K/60P. With a full-size HDMI port, 8K RAW can be output to external recorders. Furthermore, you get 8K HDR recording (PQ/HLG). The DIGIC X processor can also do 2K and 4K oversampling while internal recording and 4K 120 in 4:2:2 10-bit. Not only can the R5C do 8K/60P, it also has full-frame, Super 35, and Super 16 modes.
Body and Design
Although it appears to be a bit heavier, it still has an ergonomic design similar to the R5. The slight addition to the bulk is due to the fact that a cooling fan, full size HDMI port, and some other minor tweaks had to be made. It was also necessary to relocate the LCD screen further back. Like the R3, there will also be a multi-purpose digital hot shoe. This will allow you to add different accessories, such as an XLR audio input. There’s also a ⅜” or ¼” mounting point by the EVF.
Stills Specs
If you’re an avid photographer, don’t ignore this camera just because it’s a more video-centric version of the R5. You still get a 45-megapixel full-frame sensor that shoots stills up to 20 frames per second. It includes all of the AF features released with the 1.5 R5 firmware update, including vehicles, face, torsos, eye detection, and bird eye AF. ISO and dynamic range look to be the same as those in the R5.
Canon is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its Cinema EOS System, which includes a range of cameras and lenses designed to provide a single integrated solution for professional filmmakers and cinematographers. An anniversary is an excellent time to introduce a new model. If you’re a Canon shooter seeking an upgrade, are looking for unlimited 8K video, or simply love new gear, the ergonomic EOS R5C will meet your needs.
EOS C70 Firmware Update
In case the announcement of the R5C isn’t enough, Canon has also released new details about the rumored EOS C70 firmware update which includes Cinema RAW Light Internal Recording and Frame and Interval Recording Modes.
Cinema RAW Light can now be captured internally onto compatible SD cards. In addition to the existing 10-bit XF-AVC found in the EOS C70, 12-bit Cinema RAW Light LT offers up to 645Mbps. This will allow for smaller and more efficient file sizes while preserving the benefits of RAW. With Cinema RAW Light, you can capture 16+ stops of dynamic range from the Dual Gain Output sensor. This provides the most flexibility when grading your footage. There will be three new quality settings: RAW HQ, RAW ST, and RAW LT. All of which will be 12-bit no matter the frame rate. There will also be simultaneous capture of Cinema RAW Light and XF-AVC Proxies.
Frame and Interval Recording modes allow for quick and easy creation of stop motion and time-lapse sequences when recording in the XF-AVC and MP4 formats. Frame recording is used to capture stop motion. Every press of the record button captures a determined number of frames. In time-lapse sequences, interval recording sets the number of frames to be captured and the interval between them.
