Miguel Quiles: In this episode of The Breakdown, I’m going to talk to you about one of my favorite ways to focus when shooting portraits. It’s called Eye Autofocus. I’m going to tell you everything you need to know about it, including how to set it up. Stay tuned…
[Voice Over Intro]: AdoramaTV presents The Breakdown with Miguel Quiles.
Miguel Quiles: Welcome back to The Breakdown. So you might be wondering, “What is Eye Autofocus?” And it’s actually very, very, simple. On certain models of Sony mirrorless cameras it allows you to track the person’s eye in the frame so you can actually have the person moving around from side to side or forwards and backwards and the camera intelligently can identify where the eye is in the scene pre-focus, and it will continually focus on that eyeball as they move around which is very, very, powerful.
We’re going to talk about how to set that up, but before we do that I’m going to throw up on the screen, the camera models that offer Eye Autofocusing, and it’s only these specific models at the moment, this is through 2016, and there may be some additional cameras in the future that may offer this, so make sure that you check your camera’s instruction manual to make sure that it does offer that feature. So in order to set this up first we’re going to go ahead and we’re going to push the “menu” button and on this top menu we’re going to stop at the little gear icon. We’re going to press down and we’re going to go over to option number seven.
In this menu, we’re going to go ahead and go down the custom key settings and then we’re going to push over to the right to go over to the second menu option, and we’re going to go down to the AEL button. Now, this particular button should be set to “Eye Autofocus” and the next one you want to make sure that you want to change is the AF/MF button, and you want to set that to “AF on.” Now, what you’ll do is… whenever you’re wanting to use the Eye Autofocus feature you simply push this little lever button down to the AEL section and when you want to focus, you just push this middle button here and that will find the eye in the frame and it will track it throughout the entire person’s motion. So with that being said let’s go ahead and let me demo this for you.
I have my model – Mr. Jeff Rojas, here in the studio with me today, and we’re going to go ahead and take some portraits and I’m going to show you guys how the Eye Autofocus actually works.

So there you have the folks, (a) very easy way to setup and use Eye Autofocus on Sony mirrorless cameras. I hope that you found that interesting.
