Sony is kicking off the 2019 International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) with exciting new additions to the brand’s full-frame cinema lineup. Today, the company has announced the new Sony PXW-FX9 and the FE C 16-35mm T3.1 G wide angle zoom cinema lens, unleashing the powers of your full-frame creativity.
Sony PXW-FX9:
Merging the powers of Sony’s Venice system, the FS series, as well as the Alpha cameras, the FX9 features a new full-frame Exmor R 6K sensor that creates stunning 4K videos with 15-plus stops of wide dynamic range. The camcorder also has fast, smooth, and accurate Fast Hybrid AF, a dual base ISO, and builds upon the powers of the favorite FS7 series.
Key Features:
- Full-frame Exmor R 6K Sensor
- Fast Hybrid AF, with 561 points
- Dual base ISO (between ISO 800 and ISO 4000)
- Cinematic color science with S-Cinetone
- Electronic variable ND filter

The newly developed Exmor R 6K full-frame sensor has impressive resolution, beautiful bokeh, and low noise, plus has a wider angle of view for video. The dual base ISO can swap between ISO 800 (for daytime) and 4000 (for nighttime, dark shots). The cinematic color science with S-Cinetone of the Venice delivers accurate and gorgeous facial tones and looks.
In a combination of phase-detection AF and contrast AF, the PXW-FX9 houses a Fast Hybrid AF system that has a quick AF reaction, maximum 561 points, subject tracking, and AF settings that each user can set custom. Face detection AF includes face priority AF, face only AF, and face registration, giving creatives the subject focus that’s necessary for any situation that calls for it. The camcorder’s image stabilization information produces gimbal-like videos, all with speedier processing time.
The PXW-FX9 has also adopted the run-and-gun shoulder style that’s innate to the FS7, and has comfortable ergonomics that make shooting comfortable and flexible when you need it. An improved smart hand grip is also more compact and allows for a more comfortable arm angle.
An additional built-in electronic variable ND filter means there’s no need to carry and swap out ND filters when you’re on-the-go, and four-channel audio recording, plus an improved LCD screen with 1.3-times higher resolution than the FS7 give you even more added control.
The PXW-FX9 will be available for preorder on September 16, 2019 at 3:00 PM EST, for , or as a kit with the Sony FE PZ 28-135mm F4 OSS G E-Mount Lens for For enhanced functionality, an XDCA-FX9 Extension unit (), with 16bit RAW and D-Tap, will also be available.
Sony FE C 16-35mm T3.1 G Cinema Lens

Alongside the PXW-FX9, Sony has unveiled the FE C 16-35mm T3.1 G wide angle zoom cinema lens that incorporates high optical performance with intelligent shooting options.
The 16-35mm lens is not only compatible with the high-powered FX9, but the entire line of E-mount cameras, including the Alpha series and the Venice.

When combined with the FX9, the the lens powers the precise auto focus, even with speedy subjects and a shallow depth of field. The lens’s two XA (Extreme Aspherical) elements, three aspherical lenses, and an 11-blade circular aperture enable the gorgeous bokeh, reduce the field of curvature, as well as color distortion. On top of that, Sony’s notable Nano AR coating minimizes the flare and ghosting.
Three separate rings — for focus, zoom, and iris — can all be set while shooting, and a linear response manual focus feature and focus ring make repeated captures even easier.
The Sony FE C 16-35mm T3.1 G wide angle zoom cinema lens will be available in the spring of 2020. Stay tuned for more information.
