Beginning Oct. 17th in San Diego, my husband Emir and I will start a 3100 mile bicycle ride the way across the country to St. Augustine, Florida on a mission to educate and inspire everyone with a camera.
We’re calling it The [UN]tour because it’s [UN]conventional, [UN]expected, and we think it’s going to be [UN]believably awesome! We’ll be stopping in eight cities along the way to teach a couple of free photography classes to anyone and everyone who wants to join us (yes—they’re both 100% free!). Crazy, right? Perhaps. But we’re convinced it’s going to be an incredible experience not only for us, but for everyone who chooses to be part of it. Here’s a super short video that explains it in a nutshell.
As for the free classes, I’m a bit of a workflow fanatic and have fine-tuned my process to the point where, for the past two years, every single one of my wedding clients has received not only their wedding proofs, but also their album design within a week of their wedding. This has been a life changer for me as I continue the quest (as so many of us do) for a more balanced life. I look forward to sharing my process with other wedding/portrait shooters in the Wickedly Fast Wedding class along our route. And for a wider audience that includes beginners, hobbyists, and photo enthusiasts of all levels, I’ll be sharing 10 Tips for Instantly Better Photos because everyone deserves to know how to capture great images with any camera. After all, cameras don’t take great photos—people do!
From the 10 Tips for Instantly Better Photos class I presented at an Adobe event in San Francisco in August. The entire trip will take us just over two months to complete, riding 75 miles per day for most of the journey. Along the way, we’ll be spending most nights in a tent and cooking on our small camping stove. (Words of encouragement on our blog, Facebook, and Twitter are definitely welcomed!)
Are we hardened outdoor gurus who know exactly how to do all this? Hardly! In fact, both cycling and camping is entirely new to both of us (we bought our bikes, tent, etc., specifically for this trip), so there are surely some laughable adventures ahead! (Need a good chuckle? Have a look at the practice camping trip a few weeks back that was downright silly!)Why are we doing this for free? Because it’s f[UN] and [UN]expected, and that’s what The [UN]tour is all about! We wanted to do something that’s tied to the local communities we’re visiting, so rather than rent a huge conference center ballroom, we’re holding our events at local galleries, community colleges, and other local businesses who are excited about what we’re bringing to town and want to share it with their community. We’re teaming up with local cycling associations, photographer user groups, and everyone else we can think of to spread the word and reach out to as many people as possible. It’s a totally grass-roots passion project, and we love it.
If you or anyone you know is anywhere along our route, we’d love to meet you and have you join us! And if you live elsewhere and can’t make it to a class, we look forward to sharing the adventure with you on our blog! Full steam ahead!
Khara Plicanic, a Nebraska-based wedding photographer passionately shares her knowledge in her new book, Your Camera Loves You; Learn to Love it Back, her popular Guide to a Wickedly Fast Wedding Workflow, and at industry events including WPPI. As if that’s not enough, she and her husband are riding their bicycles across the country on a free teaching tour that is so cool, we just had to share! Adorama is a proud sponsor of the [UN]Tour.
