Leica is continuing to throwback to the basics with its newest release. The Leica M10-D combines the best of analog and technology to create an appealing hybrid setup. This addition to the M-family features a slim, stylish body with an exposure compensation dial — a first for the M-series. Most notably, the M10-D does not feature an LCD monitor and opts for a truly analog setup. But don’t worry, users can connect to the brand new FOTOS app to view and share photos with convenience.
Key features:
- FOTOS App pairing
- Lack of LCD screen for analog experience
- Easy-to-access dials for ISO and shutter speed
- Exposure compensation wheel (first for digital M-series)
- On/off selector switch
- WiFi hard switch
- VisoFlex EVF compatible
- Integrated fold-out thumb rest
- Specs and design consistent with M-10P
- Quiet shutter
- Genuine leather body cover
- Black chrome finish available
Pure analog and the FOTOS app:
Leica is promoting an old-school experience with this analog setup. As mentioned above, the M10-D lacks an LCD monitor to limit distractions for the shooter, keeping a simpler shooting process. Leica aims to give its users the sense of presence, always immersing themselves in the moment of shooting, instead of spending time looking at a screen. It’s easy to get caught up in reviewing photos, adjusting settings, or messing with white balance while shooting, so a rest from a screen can be appealing.
But if users prefer a screen, the option is available. Leica is launching the new FOTOS app for both Android and iPhone, which can function as the monitor. With the app, users can connect to the M-10D to view, download, and even share their photos immediately while out and about. If you’re not a fan of the electronic viewfinder, the FOTOS app can even act as a Live View with remote shooting. The app handles basic camera settings such as date and time, as well. Aside from the FOTOS app, photos can be stored on an SD card and downloaded later.
Easy-to-access dials:
The M-10D keeps all the essential exposure setting in close reach. Dials for both shutter speed and ISO rest on top of the camera for quick adjustments and, for the first time in the M-series, the Leica M-10D includes an exposure compensation wheel on the back of the camera where the LCD-monitor would be. The wheel also carries the “On and Off” switch for power and WiFi connectivity for the app. Oh, and if you’re looking for the aperture settings, they’re on the lens.
Style and finish:
Per M-series standard, the M-10D keeps a slim, stylish body for discreetly capturing photos. The camera has a genuine leather cover for a secure grip with a comfortable feel. A black chrome finish is also available. Lastly, a fold-out thumb rest is included on the right side to add a bit more stability with heavier lenses.
