For a number of years, West Coast Baptist College has offered minors in design and production. The growing popularity of these minors led to the formalization of the Creative Arts Department in 2019, accompanying a Bachelor in Visual Arts four-year degree program. The Visual Arts program has doubled in size over the past year. To meet this growth, the school needed to expand its teaching spaces — most notably its video production and editing studio.

Adorama spoke with Keenan Sultanik, then Creative Arts Department Chair at West Coast Baptist College to learn how the school is inspiring the next generation.

WCBC: Creative Arts Department Setup

The existing Creative Arts Department design lab is unique in that it replicates a workplace rather than a classroom. It offers students a realistic work environment in which to learn industry tools and skills.

This laid the blueprint for the new classroom studio, which adds more space and equips different areas of learning, including video production and editing.

In addition to allowing the Creative Arts Department to offer new courses, which will give current students new options and attract new students to the school, the new classroom will allow Sultanik to facilitate extracurricular activities like a filmmakers’ club.

The project with Adorama Business Solutions involved partnering with WCBC to take its single classroom and grow to two unique facilities. The project completion will be in phases. Phase One includes the outfitting of a space to shoot, edit, and exhibit video content.

The challenge for the Creative Arts Department was to purchase equipment that will offer the most flexibility in use. The school would use new equipment for both broadcasting and production. The institution partnered with Adorama’s technical expertise to select the best equipment to meet the technical specifications provided by WCBC.

To further ensure flexibility of use, all the equipment purchased was placed on wheels so users can reconfigure it in minutes during the margin between class periods. Additionally, the editing bay is battery powered so that users can relocate it, maximizing valuable teaching time and space.

New Course Content Creates Career Skills for Students

The new products will allow for a variety of new teaching options around all areas of production. This includes but is not limited to classes in lighting and interview techniques.

With the lab being as flexible as it is, students can set up all the equipment as they need for their projects. They can also capture footage and edit videos in the same place.

While Keenan has been with the school since 2012, steadily growing what is now known as the Creative Arts Department, the new equipment from Adorama Business Solutions is needed to take the department to the next level.

With this new classroom studio space, the Creative Arts Department has the ability to offer brand new course content, which is in demand in the Worship technology industry. This in turn gives students a chance to learn skills that are desirable for future careers. It also supports the school’s mission of equipping the ministry leaders of the future to inspire, innovate, and influence.

Adding this new studio space now is the beginning of a five-year strategic plan by the school. The next stage is to add a third classroom—this time a hybrid 3D design and creativity lab.

In the immediate future, the new studio space will allow the Creative Arts Department to meet some of the growing demand from students. The new course content will have a wider effect on the school. It opens up opportunities to attract new students and work on projects that generate positive media.

Working with Adorama Business Solutions as a Technology Partner

Keenan has been a long-time individual customer of Adorama. He then connected with ABS, the dedicated B2B division at Adorama, after trying to set up an education account for a complex order.

As the relationship strengthened with time, Keenan views Adorama Business Solutions as true technology partners.

West Coast Baptist College required Keenan to gather three formal bids for the planned studio work. Adorama Business Solutions won out in the end due the personal level of service Keenan received, which stood out over other vendors. While Keenan has a number of years of experience in technology, he relied on Adorama’s strong manufacturer relationships and product expertise to help him choose the right brands for his specific requirements.

Keenan was particularly impressed by the fact he can pick up the phone any time to speak to his dedicated Account Manager, a service offered to all clients at Adorama Business Solutions.

Keenan’s Account Manager was his single point of contact at Adorama Business Solutions. While he has this one contact, his Account Manager was working with Adorama’s Technical Services team in the background to ensure Keenan purchased the right products.
