I bought this Headphone as a complement to the Sennheiser HD 490 Pro as there have been a lot of situations now where i needed either two Headphones in two places or simply two Headphones for two people. I wanted to give the ATH-R70xa a try and i have to say, i am not disappointed. The overall sound is very close to the HD 490 Pro what is no surprise as they were both made for the same purpose and i can use them for the same purpose. If i transfer masters from the Speakers to the R70xa or to the HD 490 Pro back and fourth, everything sounds exactly how it should sound Especially the bass that, with most open back headphones, usually gets mixed a bit too strong and then, when you listen back at the speaker, everything sounds boomy doesn't happen here. The bass is as accurate as the rest. You can mix/master with these headphones and be sure, that everything sounds as it should when you listen back on the nier-field monitors. That is what i bought them for and that is what they do.

I've used these for a couple of days now and I can easily say, especially after a quick pad swap that these were so close to being a great headphone to recommend. The rise in the mids is fantastic and hard to find in most headphones, the treble while excessively bright is smooth to my ear, the weight of the headphone is phenomenal. But there are downsides, the magnets in the strap are too weak so if you try to adjust the headphones by pulling the cups down the strap will come loose and crash into the metal headband. There is a dip in the mids around 500hz that is noticeable in most of my music. And the pads have such a small opening that it touches the top and bottom of my ear as well as the side because they are so thin. I swapped out the pads for some other ones and it fixed most of my issues aside from the strap. I think these were so close to greatness and I foresee a lot of people enjoying these as is, but not quite there for me.

The ATH-R70xa is Audio-Technica's flagship pair of professional open-back reference headphones. This enhanced version of the ATH-R70x delivers the natural and balanced sound of its predecessor but with refined accuracy and detail, providing a heightened listening experience with precise imaging and depth.
Fully open-back sound relies solely on the performance of the driver, with each diaphragm movement directly translating into sound - without reliance on acoustic cavities or resonance for frequency enhancement. While the ATH-R70x utilized damping and acoustic design for added low-frequency emphasis, the ATH-R70xa delivers pure sound directly from the transducer, offering an authentic open-back experience and minimizing distortion. This ensures accurate, natural sound with realistic sound staging.
Made for critical listening, the ATH-R70xa headphones allow engineers to make the right decision at every step of the production process. With an extended frequency range, every detail of a mix is transparently reproduced. The unrestricted airflow and absence of internal resonance allows for an extremely quick transient response, ensuring the clarity and separation needed to handle complex contemporary mixes.
These featherlight (199g without the cable), fully open-back headphones feature streamlined construction and a new headband design, allowing the headphones to virtually disappear during use - perfect for long working sessions.
Whether mixing, mastering, or creating, the ATH-R70xa is the perfect production tool, delivering accurate and dependable reference across stereo, surround, and immersive formats.
