I've been wanting to light up some of my macro shots. First the bad. -Build quality is bad, it feels like a cheap toy. -Fit and finish are not good. So the way the parts operate in conjunction with each other isn't good and I have low confidence that they will hold up over time. -Ergonomics are not good. Switches are unlabelled, but this thing is simple anyway. Would be nice to have a quick release on the ring flash rather than threading it on/off when not in use. The good. -Having a flash with an optional ring flash is brilliant. Why more companies aren't doing this I have no idea. -It does the job. Lighting seems about right. The meh. - Price point. I don't feel ripped off, but on the whole it seems overpriced for what's in the box. Paying a little for the novelty of a ring flash. - Ring flash could stand a little more diffusion. Overall. It will serve it's function. I use external flashes rarely. I wanted 1 flash that could do either rooms or closeups. I wish a company with higher quality products would make something like this.

I use this with a 85mm macro lens. Great combination. Light output is very adequate for close ups. Don't expect to use it for portraits. Works fantastic for macro shots.

The Bower SFD 52N is a lighting system for standard and macro flash photography. It is dedicated to Nikon I-TTL flash systems and features fast recycling circuitry, rear curtain synchronization and an autofocus (AF) assistance beam. The SFD 52N has a zoom flash head that tilts and swivels for bounce flash at any angle. The macro photography ring light attaches to 55 and 58mm diameter lenses with included adapter rings. The ring light can be detached from the main flash unit when not in use.
