Best 24 mm lens For Canon, great for architecture, general shooting and even product shooting.

Best 24 mm lens, period. The controls are sturdy and well designed. The option to rotate the lens to change the axis of the tilt and shift is very welcome. The lens is a tank. If I dropped it on a cement floor, I?d feel sorry for the cement (note: I am not being literal, don?t try that at home). Resistance to flare is very good, and the resolution it is capable of showing exceeds all current Canon cameras. You will love this lens, and those who don?t yet understand how lens focus and perspective movements work, will be able to quickly learn the incredible benefits those functions lend to this lens.

Shift on Site, not in Software. Here's Why:

The reason most people give for not investing in this top tier glass is that perspective correction in software is a cheaper and an efficient option. While it is possible to straighten lines and scew/distort images in software to get a desired result, most people are missing the main point of these lenses and the purpose of shifting on location. When you organize your frame and compose your images you have many choices to make. Not least of which is what to include in your frame. But, that also includes just how much of each element within your frame to include. When you're shifting your lens you're not just maintaining perspecive control, you are also making a very important decision about the spatial relationships between elements within your frame. You can move your camera around as much as you want, but if you're trying to get things arranged in such a way that things overlap or line up in such a way, you're going to have to compromise on how much foreground or height you can afford to lose by tilting your camera with the plan to correct the perspective later. My argument is not about the degradation of image quality when stretching pixels or losing resolution in your crop. That's been said so many times before. Valid arguments, but not what I see as the primary reason for obtaining a shift lens. Using this lens to it's fullest potential far outweighs the argument for an alternative "fix-it-later" approach. The right tool for the job is the the professional's argument, and knowing the advantages of a tool over another is learned through experience. Is it expensive, yes. Will it pay for itself and last longer than your camera system, yes. Scout. Meter. Compose. Shoot. Then, edit. Not the other way around.

European Cathedrals will finally look straight

I just received the lens and have not thoroughly tested it. I did attach it and aimed it at a few buildings on my street. The lens will require a learning curve, that I expected. It is also strange to focus manually, but I can't wait to take it on its first run through landscapes and city scapes.

Fantastic lens for landscapes!

I highly recommend this lens for landscape photography. This lens is great for keeping your trees from leaning over in your image, plus with the shift capability, the lens allows for creating great panoramas without having to rotate the camera. The image quality is terrific! I just love Canon glass, and this lens is no exception.

Outstanding Lens!

I sprang for this lens with some trepidation. Wide angle manual focus lenses can be difficult to focus especially in low light. So far I've experienced no problems and will continue to test myself and expand my capabilities in the tilt/shift world. The build quality is excellent and both tilt and shift options function smoothly.

A must for Architecture, Real Estate, & Interior Design

I started with the 17mm TS-E and loved it so I finally got this lens to go along with it. It is very impressive in quality, sharpness, and versatility. The ability to tilt on both the vertical and horizontal axes is handy for lining up the right shot or doing interior panoramics. I have not used the tilt function much but it's nice to have when you need it also. I bought mine used for about $ less than new (condition V) and while the exterior was pretty well worn and some of the lens adjustments were not as tight as when new, the lens glass and mechanical parts work perfectly.

Exceptional build quality.

I can run the accolades on and on about all of the features this lens has, but you can read all of that at the many review sites. I'll just relate my experience to you. I purchased this lens as I had planned on using this lens to do more than just photographing buildings. Which it does very well with little effort on my part. I also wanted the ability to do landscapes where the tilt and shift aspects will give me the versatility and creativity that a prime wide angle lens could never provide. As I am a bit older than most who would use this lens, my eyes are not as well suited for this lens as they should be. As a consequence, even with Live View and magnification, I have found that, for me, getting things focused, where I want, is a challenge, especially in the extreme angles that this lens is capable of. When I get the focus dialed in, by accident it seems, the shots are sharp and great. After three days of playing with the lens and over 3K shots, I have to admit that this lens will always be a challenge for me and I'll have to take multiple shots of the scene that I want with multiple exposure compensations to allow for my lousy eyes and glasses. Purchasing a good light meter will also be neccesary for me. Oh well, getting old isn't what it's cracked up to be. This is a great product for those that can see well enough to use this lens to its full capabilities. It moves smoothly and locks down firmly with little effort. A great build for such a complex tool. The angle guides are easy to see, even for me. It is hard to put this down when out shooting. A lot of potential for those with a creative bend. Close up shots can create some interesting perspectives as the focus gets shifted across the screen. Plan on using a very sturdy tripod for most of your shots. Buy this if you have the patience to really learn the many aspects of this lens and the eyesight. I recommend that you rent it and try it out first. Take the time to see if this lens is for you or is it just another very expensive tool that will just sit in the bag. This is not like a bike, you have to use it often to really learn it to use it well.

Great Lens for architectural photos

This lens is well built and it produces great sharp images. it works great for architectural applications but It doesn't have auto focus; it can be used for selected applications in fast pace environments like weddings.

Challenging

As an amateur, this lens is challenging, but rewarding too. The shift effect makes panoramas and architectural shots with nice straight lines both very easy. Getting expanded depth of field shots is tricky, mainly due to focusing at both the far and near points while micro–adjusting the tilt to get everything correct

Fantastic Tilt/Shift

I like this lens so much that I've started using it as a walk-around lens when I visit new cities; even without using tilt/shift, it's a superb 24mm. The shift feature has been made quite easy to use and with a little practice it works wonders. f/3.5 is nothing to write home about, but it's certainly open enough for architectural-type photography during the day. Even though 24mm comes standard with a lot of DOF, I find that the tilt feature allows me to produce even more impressive landscapes with everything in sharp focus. Opens up a new world! And it's kinda nice to go back to the days of manual focus...

Great Lens for Specific Purpose

Excellent lens for those looking for special effects (fake miniature) or who need perspective correction on architectural photographs. I use it for both, and it has served well. As others note, this lens does require some getting used to, so don't expect to get the best image possible on your first outing unless you have spent some time preparing yourself beforehand.

Amazing Lens!

Been wanting a tilt-shift lens for a while, and finally decided to jump on the opportunity. I've been reluctant due to only manual focus and price. Getting over the price, the manual focus is easy to use, have more keepers than expected and is fun in some ways. I absolutely love the Tilt+shift control of achieving fairly strong OOF areas using a wide angle. I also own the Canon 16/35 f2.8 L II and Canon 24-70mm f2.8 L in the same 24mm range. Out of the three, this lens is the SHARPEST, produces the BEST looking photos and is the most fun to use. If I don't need to worry about action and need wide angle, the Canon TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II Tilt-Shift is the one I'll grab first.

TS-E 24 II

It is a one of a kind lens. I was reading a Nikon message board and a member really wanted the lens but was complaining about having to buy a Canon body in order to use this lens. From what I have read, I might shy away from the TS-E 17 and the TS-E 45 is limited in the independent rotation of tilt and shift. I have a 7d and 5dII and I can switch bodies to get different focal lengths.

Expensive but soooo worht it

I agree - it is not your everyday lens, not even your every week lens. To be honest, if you do not have a need for it will quickly become your once-in-a-quite-long-long-while lens. Then you may feel disappointed, but it will not be because the product is not good, it will be because you didn't bother to think whether you really need it when buying it. It is also a demanding lens to use - you most probably will use a tripod (unless you have super steady hands, be patient, and take some time to learn how to use it. Btw - architectural and landscape photography, where this lens finds most applications will require a tripod and some patience (when composing) in most cases anyway. However, when you do need features of this lens and take time to learn how to shoot with it - nothing comes close to quality you will receive. If anybody claims that he/she can do the same with regular lens and some post processing while retaining the same quality, he/she either never really used this lens or doesn't really needed such lens and doesn't want to spare time to learn how to use it. If a bit of PS magic would give you the same effects / quality no one would buy TS lenses any more and manufacturers would stop producing them. Somehow, Canon not only has not stopped, but they are refreshing (24 mkII) and expanding (17) TS lens line). Asking for a fast autofocus in this lens - when at least 50% (if not more) of joy from using it comes from manipulating the focus pane, point and DoF - is like asking for a big trunk in a sports coupe. With respect to infinite DoF by tilting instead of gong down to f16-22 and loosing detail due to diffraction - please refer to YMHARNC review. Expensive? Definitely yes. But are other special application tools that you know of or use - when compared to regular items of their category - cheap?

Unique and Special Lens

Tilt-shift lenses have the unusual characteristic of being able to put all or some of the scene/person being shot in clear, sharp focus or parts in focus and other parts not. The result is a look and feel characteristic of only such lenses. This 24mm by Canon is spectacular as to both functionality and sharpness/resolution. It's a bit too much for me to describe every function in every dimension that this lens is capable of--if you're thinking of spending a couple thousand on this, I STRONGLY recommend that you rent one for a couple of days. It takes some time to figure this lens out in terms of all the adjustments and looks possible. It is not difficult to learn, but it is best if you know what you can do before dropping this kind of money. I did this and became even more excited about owning one--no doubt it is special purpose but WOW, what a lens.

Most fun lens I own

I bought this because I was interested in the perspective correction features, as probably 50% of my photography is landscapes / architectural, and I have time to use a tripod, adjust the movements, manually focus, etc. However, this lens is also an absolutely gorgeous 24mm lens, and I also use it for macro photography -- it can focus down to about an inch away from the front element. The time I brought only this lens to a dinner with friends was a mistake, but for wandering around a garden or taking a hike i'm sure to bring it.

My next walk-around lens!

I love this lens! It has replaced 24-70 for when I'm talking lone photo walk-arounds and I have the time to adjust perspective for landmarks and landscapes. It has nice round out of focus circles. The attached image was shot hand-held at night, with the image wide open and mis-focused on purpose.

Great lens!

Very crisp and clean images. Tack sharp. Improvement on the Gen 1 version of this lens. Can be used for a variety of things: Architecture, landscapes, macros, shift and stitch panoramas. Fantastic versility. If you've shot large format and miss the controls, get this lens. Yeah, it's expensive. Mostly for pros.

A Worthy Successor

I have only had this lens for a few days but I had it's predecessor for years and I can already tell that this version is sharper at all apertures, has less chromatic aberration and distortion while having enhanced movements with respect to rotating of elements. This update has improved on the old model in just about every category.

Extremely useful for handheld photography

If you have looked up resolution on this lens on The-Digital-Picture you already know it is incredibly sharp and distortion free. It has become my favorite lens for the type of industrial work that I do for heavy industry. However, I want to address a caveat that several reviewers have made: that it is essential to use a tripod with this lens especially when the tilt function is used. Nonsense. I have taken many pictures with the tilt function hand held. It is not that difficult to set up focus from near to far by going back and forth a bit with the tilt function. When you get it right, all that's necessary is to maintain the same camera angle to the subject. You can stand up, squat down, pivot left or right and the tilt function will work just fine as long as you hold the camera in your hand with the same angle. This ease of use makes the tilt function amazingly useful for many sorts of photography that are commonly encountered in factories, mills, mines, pipelines, and such. I rarely use a tripod for any photography and hardly ever need to use one with this lens.

Know Your Facts

I've used this lens, which replaced the marginal Mk I version I owned previously, for over a year. Awesome doesn't begin to describe the image quality you can get with it. Canon engineers hit a home run with this lens. My extensive experience with t/s lenses and my particular experience with this lens leaves me scratching my head at a few of the comments I've read about the use of tilt-shift lenses and this lens in particular. My favorite feature of this lens is its ability to create a seam...

Enhance your photography experience with the Canon TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II Tilt-Shift Lens, a premium product that delivers superior image quality and advanced functionality. This lens, a favorite among professionals for its tilt-shift focal length, is meticulously designed with Ultra-Low Dispersion (UD) glass. This feature effectively minimizes and compensates for chromatic aberrations, ensuring your images are crystal clear and vibrant.

The lens is also equipped with specially coated aspherical elements, which work to provide the highest possible glare-free image quality. With an expansive angle of view of 74 degrees, this lens allows you to capture wide landscapes and intricate architectural details with ease.

The Canon TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II Tilt-Shift Lens introduces a new TS revolving feature, allowing users to freely combine tilting and shifting within the range of +/- 90 degrees in the direction of movement. This enhanced range of movement, up to +/- 8.5 degrees, offers a revolving construction for both portrait and landscape shooting modes.
