Questions & Answers

Tom S : How does this 500D close-up lens compare to other brands which are rated +1, +3, +5, etc.? ThanksJAMES R : I have only used the Canon and it works fine, so I can't evaluate the Hoya. Hoya products I have are excellent. Also this is not an equal substitute for a macro lens so either would probably work fine.TOM C : No idea --- but it is suppose to be one of the best.
Shopper : I have a Canon 15-85 len, 72mm, which canon close-up I can choose, Canon 500D or 250 ?DAN H : I use the 500D on both my nikon 55-300 and 18-55 with a 55-72mm ring adapter with no problems.JULIA M : The 250 is geared for lenses up to 135 focal length, so this seems to be the best for you. I got the 500d as my lense goes to 270.C V : It depends on how much magnification you want to achieve. These close-up filters make almost any lens act like a macro lens. The filter size has to match your lens' mm thread size. The 500 magnifies more than the 250. Of course neither of these are as sharp as an actual macro lens but when hiking or traveling having one of these means you don't have to carry another lens to get macro photos.JOANNE B : I have no idea. I have Nikons.JOHN R : I am using the 500D on a Nikon lens and it works perfectly.JAMES R : I would choose the 5D because it gives you a larger range of lenses to use in the future. You are probably going to use the close up lens at 85mm so the 5D would work. Hope that helpsMichael B : As far as I know it only works with the 70-300mm zoom.TOM C : 250D
LESLIE L : I was thinking of using this on my Nikon 85mm lens. Will this work and will I need any additional adapters?FREDERICK J : This lens is basically a filter, match lens with your filter size. Otherwise use a step down for the closeup. My 70mm to 300mm works greatJAMES R : You will need an adapter to either step up or down for the filter size of your 85mm lens.CARRIE J : I love this close up lens. I use an adapter to fit my 55mm lens and it works well. I'm not sure if there is an adaptor for your size, but Im sure that somebody can help you with that. Good luck!JAMES W : If you're lens filter mount is 72mm the answer is no. Other wise you will need to use a step up, or step down ring. For instance if your lens is 67mm then you would need the 67mm to 72mm step up ring. Personally I use the 500D 58mm filter. For my Nikon 18-55mm lens which is 52mm, threads I use the 52mm to 58mm step up ring. MY 70-300mm Nikon lens is 62mm. I use the 62m to 58mm step down ring. You always want to use a close up filter that's as close as possible to your lens filter size or you will have problems with sharpness on the edges of your photograph. I hope you will find all this information very helpful.TOM C : Don't know.

A thrifty way to do macro photography!!

Great for macro photography. An inexpensive alternative to do macro without the higher cost of a macro lens. If you do casual macro this is the way to go. Can never beat a real macro lens but the Cannon 72 close-up lens works just fine.

What's a close-up lens do?

Don't think of it as a magnifier. It lets you put the front of the lens closer to the object. Now you have more pixels of the object and fewer pixels of unwanted background. Depth of field is reduced as well because the object fills more of the frame. You'll probably want to use a tripod. Doesn't everyone? There are websites and books that explain how to calculate the effects of close-up lenses. I carry a small notebook with depth-of-field and minimum focusing distances for various lenses I use with other c/u lenses. The Canons weren't available when I wanted a 72-mm to go on a Canon 28-135 mm so I bought another double-element lens from Adorama. It goes everywhere. Even though I have a 60-mm Canon macro, I use the c/u lens more often because it's convenient. It halves the minimum focusing distance. I mostly use it for flowers and cooperative bugs.

A must buy close-up lens

It is not only for Canon but for any camera brand you own. This is a must buy product if you want to step into macro photography with less cost. Period. It has been recommand by many experts from my web searching. Even you have a macro lens this will help and amaze you into another world without decrease the quality much; at least no reduction was found from my photos.

500D greatf but not everything expected

Excellent optics, well built and typical fine Canon quality. Only disapointment that I could not get that much addtional macro using my Sigma 18MM-200MM lens that I purchased the 500D for so that I would not need to cary a dedecated macro lens when trying to lite. I may try another 500D on my Canon 70MM-300MM telephoto lens. This will require a smaller mount than that of the Sigma lens.

Wow--amazing little device.

Quick way to get macro shots without the expense of a macro lens. The Canon far surpasses the cheap "close up" lenses--the difference is astonishing. If you use a Nikon, as I do, just get the inexpensive step-up ring.

Did not work for me.

I bought to use this on a Nikon 18-200mm VR lens. I got very little magnification, it may work on other lenses, but is not worth the price to use on the 18-200mm. I did return it.

Built well but limited improvement

The lens itself is built well. I do not find much improvement in close-up magnification.

A terrific addition to my macro lens...

The 250D/500D series close-up lenses incorporates a double-element achromatic design for maximum optical performance, while the standard 500 series features single-element construction for maximum economy. The 250 close up lenses changes the closest focusing distance from infinity to 250mm approx. 9.9", and the 500 close up lenses changes it to 500mm approx. 19.7".

Double-Element accessory attaches to front of lens (For lenses from 70mm to 350mm)
