This is an update to my review from two years ago, after using this with my other Canons (G30/G40/XA11 on 40+ shoots. Originally gave the camera only 3 stars because of glass/sensor which required more gain than the other cameras, removal of WiFi feature and disappointment there was no quick way to access the volume settings. While all those things are still true, I'm upping to 4 stars, and changing from "would not recommend" to *would* recommend. The reason: Outstanding Image Quality On all the other 3 cameras, I routinely will add a light sharpening filter to my media before rendering -- the images look softer than I'd like for our live event coverage. For the G50, however, the image is sharp and clean. We shoot at 4K so we can push tighter in post if/when needed, and the image holds very well, and colors match just great along the entire Canon lineup there. AND.. it turns out the need to gain up more really hasn't been a problem because the image is sufficiently clean that it doesn't add undesirable noteworthy grain/noise! :-) :-)

Light weight but powerful enough for indoor recordings of religious services. No additional mic was needed, nor lights. Camera has a wide range and provides corrected color under demanding situations. For the price an excellent video recorder. Those with large church or temples, may require a camera with greater dynamic capabilities.

I've always loved Canon products but was hesitant on buying this since it was on "backorder." Oh, I already knew about this product as I've used it couple times (borrowing from a co-worker) Many people prefer Sony or even Panasonic over Canon. Even online reviews suggest that. However, at least for me, this was the best camcorder in this price range ($800~$1000) I actually was thinking about just cancelling the order and purchase from other store who had this "in stock" up until the day that I got the "back in stock" notification. I'm really glad that I didn't act on my impulse. The accessories in the kit are all great quality and something that I wasn't going to buy with my money straight up even though always wanted them. Furthermore, they shipped it so fast, I didn't miss my event (for which I was thinking about using my other worse camcorder or buy from another store)

It was a great deal to buy the whole package and the camera arrived quickly. The only problem is that several of the other included accessories were backordered and still haven't arrived. Adorama has been good about keeping us updated on the status though.

The Canon VIXIA HF G50 4K UHD Camcorder has been a success. We bought them to do live recordings at our church and the quality is great for a reasonable price and they are pretty easy to set up. We haven't had any issue so far, I would definitely recommend it.

Another great Canon Vixia! We got this to up our livestream game and boy it has it. Love the simplicity of the Canon menu system and a clean HDMI out. No cons that I've experienced so far.

The compact size and super functionality of the camera is amazing. It has most of the features that a prosumer or pro camera offers without the price tag. Menus are easy to follow and read. Everything is explained very well if you need to refer to the manual for help. User friendly with all the menus and buttons within easy access and convenient locations. The ability to piggyback recordings from SD card to SD card takes the worry out of running out of memory. The battery has a long life with a full charge and can easily shoot a two hour project without interruption, if you need that much time between takes. The compact size if the camera does not take away functionality, but places a lot of power into an easily transportable size. I fully recommend this camera for the pro and beginner alike. Having a camera this size in this price point able to shoot in 4k is quite astounding.

This is the third Canon camcorder I've owned over the years; starting with a Vixia HF S11, then moving up to a G20. First, some history for reference and talking points. Prior to the S11, I used another brand (back to the Hi8 days. And after the G20, I also switched back to that different brand. This was due to Canon's sensors not providing any oversampling at the time in any consumer units. Without going into the details, note that the entire industry doesn't use the term "pixel" correctly. But I really missed Canon's color science! Thankfully, the G50 came along which provides a 21 MP (well, 21 mega sensor site) sensor that can now capture both 4K and HD by oversampling. I estimate the HD is oversampling by using 9 sensor sites to create each HD pixel. But it's not quite 4 sensor sites for 4K. The resulting images are very crisp and greatly reduces or even removes moire. I have found though that it's better to shoot in 4K and downsample in post (i.e. export in HD) than to capture HD. When doing this, the resultant HD footage contains even higher levels of detail. Whereas capturing HD directly in the camcorder lead to a slightly more soft image. Colors are awesome! True to life. No more fiddling with color controls in the other brand trying to reproduce the same. Really like the cold shoe mount! I will be adding an external mic shortly. The internal mics, while decent, do not protect against wind noise very well at all. Even when those settings are enabled. By not having to use the mini shoe, you can still later add a mini shoe accessory (e.g. GPS module). The feature set is really rich. Coupled with the extra dials and programmable buttons, this unit is far ahead of the G20. I especially like the dial which I set to control iris, shutter and gain when in manual mode. The nearby button then lets to cycle amongst those three settings easily. I have not fully measured battery life with the packaged BP-820, but it's quite decent. I have a total of four 256 GB SDXC cards (I use simultaneous recording mode). This will provide for around 7 hours when shooting in 4K. Not bad at all. The stablization, especially the dynamic setting, does an excellent job and can create very stable-looking footage. It does crop slightly. But so would any post-processing stabilization process. Really like that the lens is f/2.8 on the tele end. While other products have a "1.0 inch" (this is actually a 16mm sensor), they tend to be f/4.5 on the tele end. So while they allow for higher gain, you mostly lose that benefit due to the narrower aperture. Speaking of gain, while the G50 does outperform the G20 in terms of low-light, video can still be quite noisy. And gain only goes up to 24dB. Thus, you can only increase gain by four stops. If you're also at the widest aperture (f/1.8), you're then only option is to reduce shutter. I try to stay at f/2.0 as much as possible, and use a 23.976 framerate with 1/48 s shutter. While the unit has built-in NDs, you have no direct control over them. I will thus plan to pick up both a 3-stop and 6-stop ND filter for outdoor shooting (so I can keep the lower apertures). As well as a circular polarizer to get outstanding outdoor footage as well. Finally, about the only feature I wish this unit had was wide DR just to get a tad more dynamic range.

Adorama gets 5 stars, this camera gets 0. I had issues with the first camera so Adorama exchanged it. The second camera is junk as well. Bought the 4K HF G50 to replace the HD HF M40. The HD video quality from the HF M40 is much better than the 4K I am getting from the G50. The video out of the G50 is not smooth and fluid. Moving objects i.e. trains, cars, birds, trees & tall grass blowing in the wind, anything moving all have a stutter to them. This is visible through the view finder or lcd when recording. Even when recording at 1920 x 1080 the video retains the stutter. I've shot in both full auto and in manual with the Tv set at 2000 with the same results. Even when slowly zooming or slowly panning there is a visible stutter to the motion.

I've had this camera one week and used it on-site at a Musical Theatre shoot yesterday for the first time. I also was shooting on a Canon G30, G40 and XA11 (for comparison. Here's my impression: LIKES - the new reorganized menus with submenus - the hardware menu button and joystick controller - The audio options - Support for larger files (instead of broken into 4 GB segments)! One file for long shoot! DISLIKES (1) Inability to assign a custom button to “AUDIO LEVELS” -- need a quick way to access audio settings to adjust levels when set to manual (which I do). G40, G30, XA11 I could assign this to a custom button, but on the G50 you need to touch the on-screen Function button, scroll to find the Audio icon and click it, then you can change the levels. In a run & gun situation, quick access to make needed changes is really useful, and not being able to assign this is a step backwards :( Would like this option added back in a firmware update -- this is a "bug" IMO (2) The G50 ran 9-15 DB DARKER than the G30/G40/XA11. I thought this may have been due to the ND menu set to “Auto” and some bad choices the camera was making to “automatically” help. But when talking with Canon tech support on the phone, she said "nope -- this 4K sensor is totally different and that's just how it performs. Although the gained image in these cameras is pretty darn clean (up to a point), this is a real disappointment. Regardless of what the tech said, I turned the ND to "off" now and will see in my next theatre shoot how it performs. WISHLIST (1) Would like ability to record both 4K to one memory card, and 1080p to the other. (2) I wish the WiFi remote features were back -- in a multi-cam situation without a camera op on each imaging device, it's Super-Helpful to be able to remotely monitor exposure and framing and make minor tweaks from a central camera I'm driving.

Canon VIXIA HF G50 4K UHD Camcorder Success
By OBED P.
The Canon VIXIA HF G50 4K UHD Camcorder has been a success. We bought them to do live recordings at our church and the quality is great for a reasonable price and they are pretty easy to set up. We haven't had any issue so far, I would definitely recommend it.
Seeing is believing–and with 4K capabilities in the VIXIA HF G50 camcorder, you'll be seeing everything more dramatically, more intensely and more realistically. Detail and color reign supreme with the large-format CMOS Sensor, which combines with the DIGIC DV 6 Image Processor to deliver brilliant results on any screen. An advanced 20x Optical Zoom lens gives you impressive telephoto power and a wide angle of view, while the 5-axis Image Stabilization system provides the steadiness and focus you need for your productions. With 4K resolution, amazing features and a mobile-friendly design, the VIXIA HF G50 gives you stunning video quality on the go.
The combination of a large-format, high-sensitivity CMOS Sensor and Canon's DIGIC DV 6 Image Processor with Over Sampling HD Processing enables 4K UHD recording with outstanding image quality.
An advanced automatic white-balance system analyzes different areas of an image and makes adjustments where they are necessary to capture beautiful, natural scenes with true-to-life color.
The VIXIA HF G50 camcorder features a Genuine Canon 4K-compatible 20x Optical Zoom lens. It offers a 35mm equivalent of 29.3–601mm, with a minimum object distance of just 23.6 inches (600mm)* and 0.4 inches (10mm) at wide end. Incorporating advanced elements and coatings, it helps reduce flare, ghosting and other distracting effects to deliver sharp, clear images with minimal distortion.
The VIXIA HF G50 represents Canon's Full HD System, delivering truly excellent image quality and reproduction for most any application. Its Over Sampling HD Processing utilizes the image data delivered by the powerful 4K UHD CMOS Sensor to enable Full HD recording that is nothing short of stunning.
Canon's sophisticated SuperRange Optical Image Stabilizer helps correct camera shake quickly, so even handheld video taken at long focal lengths can be sharp and steady. The VIXIA HF G50 camcorder's DIGIC DV 6 Image Processor enables its versatile Dynamic Image Stabilization mode. Providing continuous adjustment throughout the entire zoom range to correct a broad range of motion, with extra compensation applied at wide-angle focal lengths, the Dynamic Image Stabilization system on the HF G50 stabilizes rotational camera shake. Controlling rotational camera shake–horizontal, vertical and roll axis–helps ensure smooth, virtually distortion-free video, even when you're walking while shooting.
The VIXIA HF G50 camcorder incorporates Canon's DIGIC DV 6 Image Processor, which is integral to providing high image quality, advanced performance and convenient operability. This advanced core technology component provides the image-processing power and speed that enables features such as 4K UHD video acquisition, image stabilization and slow and fast motion recording. It also captures high amounts of light for brighter, virtually noise-free images even in dark scenes.
The VIXIA HF G50 camcorder features an 8-bladed Circular Aperture, which helps reduce the "starburst" effect found in camcorders with non-circular apertures. The result is that points of light in out-of-focus areas, usually the background of your shot, are circularly blurred, creating beautiful images with an authentic and artistic feel. The professional touch of a manual focus ring allows accurate and precise control. For extra flexibility, the manual focus ring can be easily set to control zoom instead.
The VIXIA HF G50 camcorder features a bright, 3.0-inch capacitive LCD touchscreen that's clearly visible with rich, natural color reproduction wherever you go. Its streamlined user interface makes choosing focal points, tracking moving subjects, and shooting and watching your videos easy and fun. Clear explanations pop up when selecting shooting modes and recording formats, so videographers can feel the confidence to create impressive videos.
The VIXIA HF G50 camcorder features a 0.24-inch, approximately 1.56 million-dot color electronic viewfinder with approximately 100% field of view coverage for detailed, accurate composition judgment. The viewfinder can be tilted up to 45° from its normal resting position to enable a great amount of shooting freedom. Settings can be adjusted with the handy joystick, so you won't have to stop looking through the viewfinder. Because it is positioned where the thumb naturally rests, you can shoot and adjust easily–even with one hand.
The VIXIA HF G50 camcorder's many control features help make professional customization and functionality easy. Equipped with five assignable buttons for quick-access and custom shooting, the camcorder can be tailored to your specific preferences or needs.
An ergonomic joystick located to the right of the viewfinder enables control of camera settings on the viewscreen without having to use touch panel controls. Using the joystick, users can simultaneously control settings and look at the viewfinder, even during CVF shooting.
The manual focus/zoom lens ring allows for easy control, letting you make precise focus and zoom adjustments while shooting. Using the Focus/Zoom selection switch located at the back of the camcorder, switching between focus and zoom is quick, smooth and easy.
A Custom Key and Dial feature allows you to assign functions to an easily accessible key and adjust the settings with a control dial. The functions include:
Slow and Fast Motion Modes allow the VIXIA HF G50 camcorder to record a different frame rate than the playback frame rate for a fast or slow-motion effect during playback. Since the camcorder is recording real frames and modifying the playback rate, there is virtually no quality loss and maximum image quality is maintained. Additionally, interval recording allows you to record frames at specified intervals, providing time-lapse recording of up to 1200x and slow-motion down to 0.4x of the original speed.
With the VIXIA HF G50 camcorder, you can record in MP4 format in 60p at up to 35 Mbps. 1080/60p recording captures twice the amount of information as 60i, and with images captured at a rate of up to 60 frames per second, diagonal noise is virtually eliminated so even fast-moving subjects show up crisply with motion and patterns clearly recorded. This greater sense of detail and faithful rendering of moving edges, plus enhanced color and fine tonal gradation, gives your video everything Full HD has to offer.
The VIXIA HF G50 camcorder supports 1280x720 HD resolution recording at 8 Mbps. Reaching approximately 7.62 megapixels, it's ideal for film projects, weddings and more shoots that require high quality video production.
The VIXIA HF G50 camcorder allows you to record video directly to widely available SD, SDHC and SDXC memory cards with capacities ranging from over 32GB to 2TB. They are available in ultra-fast reading and writing speeds and make it easy to share video.
