Review Summary

I recently purchased this lens as an addition to my current lineup. I haven't been in photography industry for a long time, I am still a beginner hobbyist, but this would be my second L lens from Canon. My fifth lens in total. Although my previous were less expensive and not on the more expensive glass side, they still provided great images when shot correctly through my camera. With the addition of my RF 24mm I was able to see a noticeable change in my picture quality. I'm still getting used to all my available features, but I can definitely tell you that the RF 24mm was worth the purchase. I figure if I can already see a difference image the possibilities after some real practice. Great purchase.

Low abberation, low coma, although some color fringing is noticeable in some situations, but is easily corrected in post. Very sharp, very lightweight. No depth of field aperture marks but ability to use DOF apps and manually focus with distance data on the screen overcomes this limitation. This lens is designed for the images to ONLY be used when lens corrections are enabled. If you disable them during post, you will see a severe amount of peripheral shading, and the barrel of the lens will clip the corners. Generally this isn't a major issue, but for some specialty work such as nightscapes this can cause some post processing shortcomings. However, for this same type of work, the comatic aberation and astigmatism is about the lowest I've ever seen in a wide-angle lens with stars on the edges and corners depicted as round points of light, even when shooting wide-open. I agree with other online reviews that this is probably Canon's best performing wide angle lens they've ever produced when shooting nightscapes of the Milky Way, and the performance wide open will improve nightscape exposures by at least 1 EV since you don't have to stop it down to reduce astigmatism and coma. The AF capability wide open when shooting starry landscapes is also superb, eliminating the need to use focusing aids to achieve sharp stars. If you can achieve sufficient exposure, or don't overly process nightscape imagery, then the lens corrections won't be a problem. Given it's tremendous performance on rending stars wide open, ease of focus, and light weight, this will likely be my new go to lens for Milky Way photoshoots over my very heavy, manual focus, expensive german made lenses I've been using for that work up to this point.

The RF24mm F1.4 L VCM is part of the expanding Hybrid lens series, targeting a wide range of still-image and video shooters, with a combination of wide-angle coverage, a fast f/1.4 maximum aperture, and excellent optical design. On a full frame camera this lens gives you a wide-angle look which has for decades been used to add drama to photos and videos, and has always been a very popular for establishing shots. On the video side, this lens really shines with a dedicated manual Iris ring, and a new linear focus motor called a VCM (Voice Coil Motor) that is virtually silent. The VCM works in tandem with a Nano USM on the floating focus unit for incredibly fast autofocus. And finally, focus breathing is barely noticeable on this incredibly versatile lens.
Features
Incredible Feature Set From an Incredible Lens Series
This lens has a lot going for it. You already know about the VCM and Iris control ring, but there is so much more. You can attach filters to this lens in two ways, a front 67mm screw thread allows for screw-on filters, and in the back of the lens is a cut gel filter holder (bundled). You also have a control ring and a control button both of which you can assign functions to. This lens is also dust and weather resistant, has two aspheric lenses, and ASC (Air Sphere Coating), SSC (Super Spectra Coating), and Fluorine Coating to significantly reduce ghosting and flare.
Excellent Image Quality
Again, thanks to the Canon RF lens mount, the RF24mm F1.4 L VCM lens offers great optical quality. Its optical design includes two UD lenses and one aspherical lens as well as Air Sphere Coating (ASC), and Super Spectra Coating (SSC) to reduce ghosting, and Fluorine coating on the front and rear lens surfaces to help mitigate smudges. On top of that, this lens features the same dust- and water-resistance found on every L-series lens with seals around the Control ring, focus ring, zoom ring, operation panel, and lens mount.
It's Showtime!
This lens is part of a new family of "hybrid" lenses that focus on video creation as much as still photography. To that end, this lens features a manual iris control ring so you can smoothly change the aperture from f/1.4 to f/16 during video capture. Thanks to advancements in lens design, focus breathing on this lens is extremely minimal, and backlit images are sharp. Combine all of these features, and you've got a great video lens in your hands.
Let's Focus
The RF24mm F1.4 L VCM is part of a series of "hybrid" lenses that focus on video performance as much as still photography. One of these new features is a change to how the focus system works. There is a Nano USM that controls the floating focus unit, and a VCM (Voice Coil Motor) that powers the rear focus unit. These focus motors work in tandem for incredible speed in near silence. One important note about the VCM is that it requires power to hold its position, so when the camera is off, or the lens is not attached to a camera, you may hear and feel slight movement. This is normal, and there is extra cushioning inside the lens to help prevent damage in this situation.
