Great Camera for Cost

I bought this model as I needed to update because my old camera's abilities were lagging. Fits well in the hands, has weight, yet light. I have been more happy with the picture quality. The auto detect feature is on point and works really well. I used it to take pictures for a wedding a month ago, and 90%+ pictures were crisp and clean. The only con is the shutter can lag when taking several pictures in a row. If you want a mirrorless camera that doesn't break the bank, yet provides great quality. I highly recommend.

Great entry into the world of full frame mirrorless, with caveats.

I bought this camera when it first came out back in early 2019. It came as a bundle with the RF 24-105 F4 L IS USM lens. To this day, it's still the best lens I have ever owned and I regret selling it. As for the camera, the thing that drew me to it is that it was the first generation of offerings by Canon into the world of full frame mirrorless, right alongside the EOS R. It was as compact as many film SLR's from the 1970s instead of the size of big clunky DSLR's, which was enticing to me. Although the camera was great at the time, if you are purchasing it today brand new, it is starting showing its age. The viewfinder can be a little small and dim at times, especially in bright sunlight, and the sensors dynamic range leaves a little bit to be desired. However, if the camera goes on sale, which it does often enough, it can still be an amazing bargain for first timers or those looking for an affordable back up body.

Battery life

Always remember to bring a spare battery. If you're taking lots of shots and spending a lot of time, bring two. Still haven't figured out Fv mode, but I usually use manual mode.

Great for family photos

This was a huge step up from our Canon rebel, I wanted a camera to take photos of our newborn and this has been fantastic. It's also small and light which will be great as he grows up. It's very easy to use and the eye detection works great.

Great quality and affordable!

I bought this camera back in 2023 and I've had a great experience with it! I do primarily portraits (indoors and outdoors) and product photography. I was surprised how well it worked in low lighting. The kit lens works very well! I have a few photographer friends who hate on kit lenses but the 24-105mm kit lens worked just fine for me for the longest time. I still use it on occasion, but I have purchased the 24-70mm, 50mm, and 100mm lenses to be utilized with the camera as well.

The EOS RP needs better firmware

I brought this camera a week ago and I'm kind of regretting it. The Panasonic G7 which I believe was launched 5 years before the RP comes out ahead of the camera and the RP has electronics and components that is worlds advanced than the G7 yet the camera exactly drastically under performs a camera that is 5 years older than it. For example RP has a max burst rate of 5fps the G7 has 8.1 fps RP has a max rate of 24fps in k4 without dual pixel autofocus and the the G7 does k4 in 30fps The RP when focused on a blue sky kind of washes out the blue and looks a lot whiter the g7 has a much more beautiful blue color. Both cameras have roller shutter effect and banding but it's less noticeable on the G7, unfortunately neither camera have a log profile but using custom settings you get a lot more flexibility with the G7 The G7 basically leaps ahead in many aspects to a newer camera. To which I believe a lot of it is held back at the firmware level. I can't understand why canon won't push the camera at the firmware level as much as possible because after studying the hardware the digic 8 processor has the capabilities to offer everything the camera does not have. The RP could beat the competition in many ways and become a very powerful entry level full frame camera that's affordable. But currently it falls to last place against many weaker cameras that this camera should be able to beat but doesn't. Hoping canon launches a new firmware that enables the camera to reach its full potential .

Canon EOS RP

I bought my Canon EOS RP camera in December of 2023. It stopped working a few weeks ago. I had trouble with it a few months ago also. I have sent it to Canon for repair. It was well taken care of. I am a semi professional photographer. I expected a much greater longevity.

Great Camera for Small Product Photography and 360 Spins

I purchased this camera for small product stills and 360 spins along with the Canon 24-105 F4-7.1 lens. I've been very happy with this combination - it was easy to get up-to-speed and works very well in a tethered configuration. Our customers compliment us regularly on the quality of our product photos.

First full frame camera

I've had this camera for about a month now, I'm enjoying it a lot my first ever camera was a canon Rebel T7, then I got a EOS R10 was happy with it but didn't feel it was for me, so I sold the R10 and got a Sony A6400 liked the camera as well but still didn't feel like it was the right camera, so sold that as well eventually I saw the RP I know it's older than the R10 but it was full frame camera and that's what I was honestly looking for and it was still affordable, I take pictures for my church and I've used all 3 cameras and I'm liking the RP the most out of all of them

Great Value and Quality

The Canon RP is my first full frame camera and my first canon camera. The first thing I noticed is the beautiful colors. I use the camera to photograph friends, family, wildlife, and landscapes. It's not the fastest but it makes sense at this price point. The kit lens is good enough to get excellent quality images. I picked the RP over the R6 because it is lighter. As soon as my budget permits, I will be upgrading to the r8 because it's light too.

Excellent entry to full frame mirrorless for the price.

The bad: So far I can't get it to work with third party lenses. The camera and adapter seem to treat a third party full frame lens like it's an ef-s lens by only allowing it to shoot in 1.6 crop factor mode. Also it will not get exposure and color balance correct. This is disappointing since I can't use my favorite lens on it. The good: It works flawlessley with my Canon EF and EF-S lenses. This is not a sports and action camera so keep your expectations in check. It's been easy to transition from my EOS bodies to this and it's nice to have a lightweight, more compact camera to carry around. The focusing is fast and accurate which I cant say for my 6D. I'm loving the connectivity with the Canon Camera Connect APP. It's very easy to quickly connect and transfer images straight to my phone for instant social media purposes. For the price this is a great entry in to full-frame mirrorless, and not to worry if you have a lot of Canon EF glass, they work perfectly.

Good Camera - but disappointing. Not "bullet-proof"

Plusses: Use of legacy EOS L-series and other EF lenses with adapter. Full frame imager. Minuses: Less robust build quality to previous DSLR generations. Dead pixels. Poor internal surge protection when using AC adaptor for webcam (fried my camera and it no longer works). Cost of repair higher than value of a 3 year old camera. I also own an "R" model and was also sorely disappointed with it, too. Vertical line in the center of the imager required replacement. Repair cost 60% of purchasing a new one. Early adopting of technology not advised. Imagine the newer models (2022/23) better than this early generation.

Great Travel Camera

I bought this camera to upgrade the technology to a mirrorless camera. I have a Canon 6D camera and I felt as if I didn't downgrade in functionality because this camera had all the functionality and then some. This camera came with the 24-105 lens. My Canon 6D had GPS receiver built in to geotag the images. The RP didn't have this functionality so I bought a Canon GPS Receiver GP-E2 because I like to geotag all my photos. The receiver goes on the hot shoe and it is very easy to set up. It worked very well. The flip out screen is definitely a game changer and that was another main reason to buy the camera. I took some pictures with the Mode Dial set to "Scene Intelligent Auto" and found the pictures came out really good. I just left the dial there, concentrating on composing the shoot. It is a great travel camera as it is small and light. I brought with me on a bike tour of Paris. In my opinion it is the best bank for the buck.

Great entry level camera

I knew what I was getting going into with this purchase. I was looking for an entry level, full frame camera that had a good set of lenses that I could grow into with better camera bodies down-the-line. The rp fit this bill perfectly. I will continue to use my other systems for sports and high speed shooting. But I am enjoying the rp for general photography. The ability to easily pack the rp body, an rf50f1.8, and F4 L series 24-105 and 70-200 zoom lenses in only a little more space than my M43 gear is a huge bonus. The camera body is straightforward and easy to use. The Jpeg images are great out of camera, and there is some flexibility in the raw files, which is not very important to me, as I don't do a lot of post processing, but I can push it a little bit when I need to. I wish the 4k video wasn't intentionally crippled with contrast detect focus. I am used to that using M43, although the better models have phase detect, so I can work with it pretty well, and the Dual pixel system with 1080 works very well. Otherwise not much to criticize here. It would be great if the camera had ibis, and I wish it had 1 or 2 more buttons on it that could be programmed ( I miss a dedicated iso button, but use the lens control ring for that). I can live with the frame rate for what I am using the camera for. This would absolutely be a 5 star rating if the 4K video focus were better and there were a few more direct controls. But I understand it's an entry level camera built to a price point, and I'm glad there are now a number of inexpensive lenses that people could purchase to keep the price down.. In my case I sacrificed a little bit of performance out of the body to be able to purchase the better L-series glass for the camera, it was a wise trade off for me. Overall, for an advanced enthusiast like myself, I am very satisfied with this camera. In a few years I will look forward to upgrading to a higher performing body, but it suits my needs very well at this point. I would highly recommend anybody looking to get into full frame for a reasonable price to look at an RP body.

I was skeptical after reading reviews.

It?s been about a year since I moved to mirrorless. I owned a t7i and 6D. Loved the color profiles of canon so I decided to stick with the brand. I was between the RP and R. While the R is more suitable for my niche?, I found the RP for a steal. I absolutely fell in love with it. I?m getting into videography more as the time goes by and decided my next upgrade I?m going big with the R5C. While the R5C is a completely different beast of a hybrid. I still see myself using my RP daily. My camera is always attached to my neck literally so the RP is perfect size to use for a second body. For the price, you can?t lose. With some knowledge behind the RP you can definitely produce some professional grade photos. I just had my work published in Canvas Rebel with the help of the critically acclaimed underdog. I?m not sure if the image post with the information attached but if you?re interested in the iso, shutter speed etc. I?m on IG @bdlayers

Underrated great camera

By BabySal

I love this camera and have been taking tons of photos for commercial and hobby work. I don’t shoot a ton of video but do really enjoy its features. One thing i really want badly for this camera is a battery grip with capture button as well as mount feature etc like for the 5d series!

Canon EOS RP 26.2MP Full-Frame Mirrorless Digital Camera with RF 24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM Lens

Canon’s EOS RP mirrorless camera delivers versatile imaging features in a compact body. This portable camera lets you capture stills and UHD 4K movies in different lighting situations with its ISO 100-40000 range, thanks to a 26.2MP full-frame CMOS sensor and a DIGIC 8 image processor. It also features continuous shooting at up to 5 fps, which comes in handy when you’re shooting moving subjects. The EOS RP’s sensor uses Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF system, too. It helps the camera achieve fast and precise focus for still images and videos by providing 4,779 selectable phase-detection points. Multi-media creatives will also love the EOS RP’s video capabilities: it can shoot UHD 4K video at up to 24 fps, as well as Full HD 1080p and HD 720p movies at 60 fps. As for lens compatibility, you can use RF-mount lenses on this mirrorless camera as it has an RF lens mount. The mount will also work with EF and EF-S lenses when you use the optional EF-EOS R mount adapter. EOS RP cameras make high and low-angle viewing easier as well, with a 2.36m-dot OLED EVF and a rear 3.0” 1.04m-dot vari-angle touchscreen LCD monitor.

Canon EOS RP RF24-105mm.

From stunning portraits to breathtaking landscapes, capture high-quality images with the EOS RP RF24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM Lens Kit. Our lightest and smallest full-frame EOS camera to date*, the EOS RP is packed with impressive features, including a 26.2 MP CMOS sensor, 4K video and DIGIC 8 image processor. Plus, with the RF24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM’s compact size, versatile zoom range and optical image stabilization with up to 5 stops of shake correction, this lens kit will make the perfect match for capturing a variety of subjects

Lightest, Smallest Full-frame EOS Camera.

For all their appealing features one of the concerns of using a full-frame camera has been its larger profile, however, the EOS RP is the lightest and smallest Canon EOS full-frame camera to date.* Weighing approx. 440g (body only) while being impressively compact and comfortable to use, the EOS RP is more convenient to carry, shoot with, and store than any previous EOS full-frame camera before.

Compatible with EF/EF-S Lenses.

Engineered to work seamlessly with RF lenses, the EOS RP also maintains complete compatibility with EF and EF-S lenses by using one of three optional Mount Adapters. When using EF-S lenses, the EOS RP even crops automatically to reflect the APS-C sized sensor the lenses are designed for.

Compatible with EF/EF-S Lenses

54mm Large Diameter and Short Back Focus.

The RF mount on the EOS RP camera has a large, 54mm internal diameter – the same as the EOS R – enabling impressive handling and providing increased flexibility for lens design. Thanks to the camera’s mirrorless design, the lens’s rear element can be much closer to the image plane. This reduced back focus distance, combined with the RF mount’s 54mm diameter, helps facilitate lenses of stellar optical quality and stunning performance while enabling innovative compact camera and lens designs.

54mm Large Diameter and Short Back Focus.

20mm Flange Focal Distance for Increased Durability.

All RF lenses feature a 20mm flange focal distance, which is the distance from the lens mount to the surface of the image sensor. This flange focal distance balances the benefits of short back focus with the engineering requirements necessary for mount stability. Accordingly, the RF mount’s flange focal distance ensures excellent optical performance while maintaining the mount rigidity and camera durability necessary for real-world operation.

20mm Flange Focal Distance for Increased Durability.

12 Pins for Quickly Communicating Large Amounts of Information.

With a robust 12 pin connection between the camera and the lens, the EOS RP camera and RF lenses are able to communicate at a high speed, transferring a large amount of data and information for incredibly fast AF, plus enhanced image stabilization and optimization.

12 Pins for Quickly Communicating Large Amounts of Information.

Variety of Mount Adapter Options for Expanded Compatibility with EF/EF-S Lenses.

Mount adapters, such as the Mount Adapter EF-EOS R, deliver seamless connections between the EOS RP camera and EF and EF-S lenses with all functions intact. Offering L series level weather and dust sealing, the Mount Adapter EF-EOS R is even compatible with EF extenders like the Extender EF 1.4x III to extend your camera’s optical reach. Beyond enabling use of EF and EF-S lenses on the EOS RP camera, the Control Ring Mount Adapter EF-EOS R and the Drop-in Filter Mount Adapter EF-EOS R add functions that open up a number of new possibilities for creative image capture.

High Image Quality with 26.2 Megapixel Full-frame CMOS Sensor and DIGIC 8 Image Processor.

The EOS RP camera features a Canon-developed and produced 35mm full-frame CMOS sensor with approx. 26.2 effective megapixels. It employs the DIGIC 8 Image Processor to enhance the speed of operations across the board. This means fast, efficient performance and phenomenal image quality for big prints.

High Image Quality with 26.2 Megapixel Full-frame CMOS Sensor and DIGIC 8 Image Processor.

ISO 40000.

The EOS RP camera has a standard ISO sensitivity range of 100–40000 for stills and 100–25600 for video (100–12800 for 4K video shooting). Combined with the EOS RP camera’s remarkable low-light AF performance, still and video shooting is possible even in dark situations.

ISO 40000.

Digital Lens Optimizer.

The EOS RP camera has an in-camera Digital Lens Optimizer that works with RF lenses (and EF/EF-S lenses with a Mount Adapter) to provide a substantial improvement in image quality. The Digital Lens Optimizer limits deterioration in image quality caused by low-pass filters or wide-aperture lens designs. It’s usable both during shooting and when developing RAW data, and does not affect continuous shooting speeds. Data from compatible EF and EF-S lenses is built into the camera, and data information from RF lenses is transferred near instantly through the EOS RP’s 12 pin communication system.

Digital Lens Optimizer.

High-speed Focusing in Approx. 0.05 sec.

The EOS RP camera’s highly responsive Dual Pixel CMOS AF system features 4,779 manually selectable AF points and can deliver sharp focus within approximately 0.05 seconds. This means fast action can be captured and focus can be maintained with speed, accuracy and ease.

AF Area Coverage of Approx. 88% x 100%

The EOS RP camera features an expansive focus area of approx. 88% horizontal and 100% vertical not only with RF lenses, but also when working with select EF lenses. With older EF lenses, or with Extender types I and II, the EOS RP focuses approx. 80% horizontally and 80% vertically. This means fast and impressive focusing even if your subject is way off center.

The EOS RP camera features a sophisticated AF system with a maximum of 4,779 manually selectable AF points, which covers almost the entire image sensing area. The EOS RP can also be configured to focus on specific areas, using an extended range of selectable modes that include 1-point AF, Expand AF Area, Zone AF and Spot AF in addition to the conventional Face+ Tracking AF.

Excellent Low-light Performance.

Amazing for nighttime photography or in very low light, the EOS RP camera’s brilliant AF can operate in light as dim as a light rating of EV -5 where other AF systems may fail or search. Phenomenal AF is achieved even when using lenses with high F numbers. This ultra-sensitive AF works in concert with the EOS RP’s EVF to clearly capture subjects even when there’s limited light.

Excellent Low-light Performance.

f/11 Compatible in All AF Areas.

The EOS RP camera’s brilliant AF system doesn’t just work with bright lenses. With the EOS RP, autofocus will operate over nearly the entire image area even when used with compatible f/11 lenses. For example, users can take ultra-telescopic 800mm shots using a compact EF 100–400mm f/4–5.6 IS II lens together with an EF 2x III extender, and AF will function properly over the entire field. When used with a III-type extender, the effective AF range is limited to an area roughly 88% x 100% of the total image frame, or 80% x 80% if combined with a I/II type extender.

Variety of AF Modes including Eye Detection AF

The EOS RP camera’s Face+ Tracking mode helps enhance reliability for tracking moving subjects. When the camera detects a human face, it uses the subject’s eye as the AF point, choosing the eye closest to the camera by default. Photographers can also select which eye to focus on by touching the screen or using the camera’s AF point selection button and cross keys. Eye Detection AF can also be used in conjunction with Servo AF and Movie AF modes.

f/11 Compatible in All AF Areas.

Focus Peaking.

Among the EOS RP camera’s manual focus aids, Focus Peaking helps establish the focus area quickly and clearly. With manual focus peaking, the outline of the area in focus is indicated by a colored line. Focus Peaking is usable in conjunction with the EOS RP’s Focus Guide feature, and can be customized with peaking color and detection level specifications that fit the project at hand.

Focus Peaking.
