The Hewes reels have been my favorite since i started shooting film. They are high quality and came exactly as pictured. Very easy to use.

The Reel is solid and well made. I do not expect to have any trouble with it in the next years and the rolling of the film is smooth, something that is appreciated when the rolling has to be done mostly by touch. I would definitely recommend the Hewes Developing Reel to anyone who wants to upgrade or start with a professional equipment for their own film development.

If you are like me and can't load a plastic reel to save your life do yourself a favor and buy these now.  After one sacrificial roll just to teach myself how to load one of these I haven't had a problem since.  No more sweaty nightmares in a darkroom bag and destroyed rolls of film.  The film goes on so smoothly I had to convince myself that I didn't mess things up.

Get off the fence and make your life easier.  Worth every damn penny.

Do yourself a favor.

If you do your own developing in stainless steel tanks, and you don't have Hewes reels, do yourself a favor and buy one. You'll replace all the ones you use, they are that much better.

The Best - Fast & Easy

A little more expensive than their competitor, but I was able to find full stock here which was convenient.

Convenient

This is much easier to use than the plastic reel.  Two small hooks  in the center of the reel grab the sprocket holes of the film. Winding is much easier than feeding the grooves in the plastic reel.  I would recommend practicing first with an old 35 mm film before attempting in a darkroom or light bag.

I'm extremely glad I didn't settle for anything else because this reel is GREAT!  So simple to use & with no moving parts you don't have to worry about anything breaking. This reel is strong and won't give way to pressure. My film stays in place and I'm glad it does.

High Quality

Hewes reels work and work every time with no fuss. Can't say that for the others I've tried. What else is there to say?

The one and only

After using several other brands of film reels, I finally decided to buy a pair of these.  I have never been happier!  Definitely worth the money!  Before purchasing the Hewes reels it would take anywhere from 25-mins to 45 mins to put the film on the other reels, with repeated rewinding.  I have never spent more than 3-4 minutes total putting film on these Hewes reels.  The fixture point for the end of the film is solid and the film will not come off, also the wire the reel is made from is slightly larger in diameter than the less expensive brands so the film winds into a definite slot without any play.  With The Hewes reels my film goes on correctly the first time and every time.  This is truly a quality product, and a life saver for me.

Better made steel reels make a big difference. Don't skimp on these tools. I bought cheaper reels and had problems loading film on them. These make it a breeze to load. Save money somewhere else.

They seem like they are expensive, but they are worth every cent--they last, they load easily and quickly. I've been using stainless reels for nearly 30 years, and these are simply the best.

Don't buy the reels with the clip on it that aren't as strong, definitely buy this one!  People are always bugging me to borrow mine because theirs aren't that great.  I highly advise buying the Hewes Developing Reel!

EXCELLENT! BUY THIS ONE!

Product was purchased for daughter's college photography class.  All professor said was he preferred the heavy duty, non-plastic.  So I purchased this product for her and it was the perfect choice to meet the requirements.  She has been very happy with the reels, and has found them easy use.

Perfect choice for class requirements

I owned a cheap reel I bought at a local camera shop before this. It would never fail that at least 1 exposure per roll would be destroyed by the poor quality. So, to be sure I wasn't wasting my money, I did a lot of research before buying this item. I went at found it at other photography sites and compared reviews and prices.
So let me just say this: it works just as well as everybody here says it does!

I have done 4 rolls of film at home with this and not a single ruined exposure. It is so easy to use in the dark.

I wish I had known there was a difference in quality of metal reels when I bought my first one. 

So, if you're thinking about buying this, just do it. You won't regret it.

Amazing, simply amazing!

Taking a Black and White photography class, finger dexterity not quite what it use to be, trying to roll film on to a reel in the dark is a monster. The Hewes reels make it a snap. Would definitely recommend Hewes heavy duty reels to anyone still interested in learning to process film.

Always use the heavy duty reels! If you use the cheap ones, treat them like precious artifacts, I have had the cheap ones get constantly bent out of shape so easily, and you usually can't fix them!

As easy as everyone says

I love it! The ones my professor has are so weird and I would have to re-roll the fill over and over in the dark room until I would get too anxious and just give up. With these I get it on the first try, that way I'm in and out.

After having problems with some of the cheaper brands, I decided to drop the money on the Hewes reels [...].   Couldn't be happier.   Some people might complain that it takes the skill out of loading a reel as the film is easily caught on the two hooks and then very easily threaded into the thick guides but who cares, you'll have an easier time loading film and you'll get consistent results.   I've never slipped a channel with a Hewes in hundreds of rolls.
