I view these spikes as essential to any landscape photographer’s kit. In the PNW, we experience mud, rock, loose dirt... and of course sand... which is where these spikes shine. Yes they are spendy, but very high quality and their extra length makes them much better than the knock-off spikes (most of which are at least an inch shorter) when you are working in tide pools and moving water. They are virtually unbreakable thus I’m sure they will last forever.

Bought three of these Gitzo Spikes and they worked great. They came with two threaded washers to assemble onto each spike prior to screwing them into the tripod legs. After using them I would loved to have had a larger diameter washer so I could have stepped on the washer and seated the spike into the ground more easily. As far as the performance of the spike goes they worked great. They held my tripod rock steady.

I needed the spike feet for a new GITZO systematic series 5 tripod (2016 model), as the updated version (ver. 3) no longer included the spike feet. Spike feet provide improved stability for indoor carpet. No other feet can do a better job than the spike feet on carpet. I initially looked at the shorter spike feet with rubber caps, which seem to be more versatile. However, GITZO was refreshing the short spike feet. Neither the old model or the new model was in stock. The extra long spike feet were more expensive, but they also perform better for soft earth, as they can go very deep. These spike feet will require a wrench for installation. Otherwise they may come loose. I keep everything, including all extra feet, wrench, Allen keys, in the inner pocket of my tripod bag. I can switch feet on-site. Since I'm using these feet with a Series 5 extra long tripod, the setup of the tripod takes time anyway. So, I don't mind the extra time for foot change. For quick photo shooting, these spike feet may not be ideal. You usually don't want to leave them on the tripod during transportation, as they may break something. I took some pictures for a comparison among different feet. The most noticeable difference of the spike feet is their length. On soft earth, it's usually not an issue. On carpet, there is considerable gain.

I originally bought the 1.5" spikes, but they just didn't give enough holding power. After I lost one of the 1.5's (I only put them on hand tight), I decided to buy the 4.7" (supposedly for monopods) They really do the job and hold so much batter than the 1.5's. They really increase the overall stability of the tripod when shooting on non-hard surfaces. The 1.5" spikes came with rubber feet that snap onto the spike, so I use them on the 4.7 spikes so that I don't have to remove the spikes when shooting on hard surfaces. The only down side is the price. But for the $$ I paid for my carbon fiber GT3530, the feet are worth it for how they increase the stability.
