Questions & Answers

Robert L. K : I am using a 16-35mm f2.8 lens on a D800 and am interested in the Heliopan Variable ND filter. Wondering if there is any vignetting when I am down toward the 16mm setting? Thanks.MICHAEL B : I use Canon equipment, so I'm not very familiar with your camera and lens. The Heliopan variable ND filter is fairly thick, so if you have vignetting problems with other thick filters, I would suspect you would with this one too.
jeremy w : I'm fairly new to dslr filmmaking. I have seen some of the footage taken with these filters and I want to get one, but I don't know how to pick one? I assume obviously it's based on whichever lens you are using it with. I'm getting the Voigtlander 25mm 0.95 m43 lens for the GH2, and the Panasonic 20mm pancake 1.7 as well. There are a lot of filters and I don't know how to pick one. Can someone help me?Greg H : The Heliopan 77MM Variable ND is a great filter to have. If you want to shoot video in a high light situation, but maintain an open aperture and shallow depth of field then this is a great tool to have. The glass looks nice and I haven't seen any vignetting with it so far. The filter is going to be larger than the threads on the two lenses that you mentioned so make sure to get converter rings so it fits. Its nice having a 77mm filter, so when you buy new glass there is a better chance that it fits/adapts to it than if you had a smaller filter.COLBY G : Hi Jeremy, You need to look at the inside of the lens cap of the primary lens that you use. This will give you the filter tread size. You need to get a heliopan with the same threading (67mm, 72mm, 77mm, etc) if you lenses have different threading, then you can get either step up up or step down rings to make sure the heliopan fits your other lenses that you have. I would recommend buying the largest threading on the heliopan (say 77) and then buying step up filters so that you can put the 77mm (filter threading) onto a smaller lens threading. make sure you triple check the meaning of step up and step down, so that you buy the right adapter rings (they only cost $5-$10 each). Good LuckSTEPHEN M : First, get the best variable-ND you can afford, and right now, the Heliopan is the best. Second, you'll want to get a size large enough to fit not only the largest lens you have now, but one that will fit future lenses you might purchase. The 77mm is what I would recommend, and you can use Adorama step-up rings to adapt the 77mm to whatever front diameter your current lenses have. This way you can have one variable-ND filter and a step up ring for each lens.
Shopper : What are some of the applications that photographers are using it for?RICHARD P : I am using this filter to control exposure (light) when taking video with a DSLR in manual mode. I am using it as a alternative to a "Matte Box". If you never heard of a Matte Box, look it up in Wikepedia. I like the filter, but it is so thin, I can't put a lens cap on it. They make the filter thin for a good reason, so the thinness is not a defect, it was a design decision. Nevertheless, I wish I could put a lens cap on it. As of now, I just remove the filter to protect it. It works very well, especially in high brightness.Michael P : Used in still photography and videography. This variable filter allows you to keep whatever F stop and shutter speed you want in bright daylight conditions. Giving you more artistic options such as keeping the lens wide open in the sun for shallow depth of field.ANDREW W : A variable neutral density filter is great for optimizing light for the purpose of shooting video on a DSLR camera. Typically, users shoot video at 24 or 30 frames per second (US). Next the user needs to determine the appropriate shutter speed; the standard shutter rate for DSLR video is twice the frames per second. Video shot at 24 frames per second should have a shutter speed of 1/50; video shot at 30 frames per second should be shot at 1/60. Next the user needs to set the appropriate f-stop. Typically, DSLR users are trying achieve some depth of field. This requires the f-stop to be somewhere south of F8, the lower the better. Obviously, these setting are subject to personal preferences. So why do you need a variable neutral density filter? If you try to shoot video using these settings, you'll find you're extremely limited by your lighting conditions (There's too much light). The filter gives you the flexibility to adjust settings to suit the lighting conditions.

Does it’s job. Does it clean and well.

More expensive than many CPL’s. Worth it. When one uses this CPl, you do not necessarily see the sky (for example) turn a super-dark blue/Black as with other less expensive CPL’s I’ve used in past. The filter is certainly doing it polarization as designed, but seems to do it with more of a light touch, a little more finesse. And, you see it in the results.

Shooting wide open in bright light.

I chose this Heliopan variable neutral Density filter for my Summicron 75 mounted on an M10 for wide open (f2) shooting in bright light. The 75 Summicron is known to flare in bright light conditions and the M10 is known to be slightly biased toward overexposure. Enter the Heliopan variable neutral Density filter set between 3 and 6 and the problem is solved. A great piece of gear that is very well made.

Must have for Noctilux Lens

This ND filter has opened up a new world of possibilities for 0.95 Noctilux in daylight use.

Amazing quality

This lens filter is the real deal. It makes shooting in the harshest of sun a dream. I can't believe I have waited so long to purchase it. I will be ordering the 77mm as well. Thanks to Adorama TV for sharing the video about this piece of equipment.

Easy to use ND filter

This is way easier to use than a fixed ND filter. Spin the dial out to the minimum and frame your picture, then spin it in to reach your desired shutter speed. Easy as pie. It's also a useful polarizing filter when dialed out to the lightest setting. I did, on some of my test shots, get alternating light and dark quadrants (Nikon D90 with 35mm f/2 lens) when the filter was dialed in to maximum, That may have been a fluke of lining up the polarisers with the sensor grid. Though backing off from the maximum a millimetre prevented that effect. The filter also doesn't have any threads on the front, so you'll have to pop off the filter before putting your lens cap back on. I found that when the filter was dialed in towards the dark end, I had to use Manual exposure mode and trial-and-error to set the exposure on both my D90 and D7000. In short, though, a very useful and handy filter to have -- and definitely worth the price

A necessity for video

Best glass in the variable ND filters out there. Expensive, but good quality. It doesn't change color unless you push it to the limit.

Probably the best Variable ND Filter available.

Probably the best Variable ND Filter available. All the other Variable ND filter change the color/hue and destroy the sharpness. There really isn't any comparision. I got the 58mm size because all mys lenses have 58mm and smaller front threads. I keep 58mm stepup-rings and screw-on caps on at all times, as all my filters are 58mm as well. My only complaint is that it does not have front threads. The case is also pretty useless because it is not dust proof. And since this filter is extra thick it is hard to find a case for it. As I mentioned it does not have front threads so stack caps are also out of the quesiton.

This is indeed the best Variable ND Filter available

This is indeed the best Variable ND Filter available. I purchased this 52mm size at first because I didn't want to spend all the money on a 77mm since I was using mostly 46mm, 49mm, and 52mm filter thread lenses anyway. As time went on I began acquiring lenses that were 55mm, 58mm, and 77mm.. I then purchased the Heliopan 77mm Variable ND Filter. Why? Because this is the BEST one out there! If I would have known from the beginning, I would have spent the money on a 77mm never looked back. It's one of the best investments I've ever made. Camera bodies and lenses come and go...but this filter is forever.
