Questions & Answers

OVIDIU B : Do you get vignetting if you stack the UV filter and this POL filter on a 24-70mm zeiss lens?BRET C : You very well mite at the short end of the lens.
Darrell C : Will the Hoya HD2 CIR-PL Make a good "permanent" lens protector that won't hinder indoor use?CHONG E : You might want to use UV/ protector filer instead. They are cheaper. You dodn't need Polarizer every time and it increase your exposure time (hence more prone to blur)CHRISTOPHER J : Hello Darrell, Good question. My answer is that it is not. You loose some f stops, I think 1 with the the HD2 polarizer, so it is one of the reasons I am not using it as lens protector. Other is that I use this specialized filter only in some situations, so I am exchanging filters. I use UV filter as general lens protector. Photographically yours ChrisWILLIAM F : I wouldn't choose to do this due to the loss in speed. You'll easily lose 2 or more f-stops with a polarized filter which might become more of an issue for you with indoor photography. Yeah, you might save a few bucks by not getting a skylight or UV filter to act as a lens protector but they are not that expensive relative to a Polarized filter. I'd save my polarized filter for outdoors.RICHARD A : It works best outdoors when used as a polorizer. You just need a UV filter, like the Hoya UV digital filter for every day protection.KENNETH R : I"m trying to understand why you want to use such an expensive filter as a permanent lens protector. I use a less expensive filter like a Hoya Skylight 1B or a UV. Remember, you are using this as a "lens protector". You might want to check the internet for specific times/purposes when to use a CIR-PL, There are many informative sites, but I highly recommend you search on Adorama. I do and have learned a tremendous amount.YOUSEF N : Think of the polarizer as sunglasses for your lens. Using it indoors is no fun. I think the permanent protector you're looking for is a uv filter which is basically clear glass. The cost for this is a quarter the price of the polarizer.SIMON T : Not really (IMO) because lose about a stop of light gathering ability. For me, this adjustable filter works best when outdoors in high contrast situation with reflected light (like the beach). Adjusting the angle lets you dramatically improve the contrast of clouds and eliminate unwanted reflections. I use a "daylight" UV filter for protection and add this when the situation warrants.MICHAEL K : Yes, this very high quality filter can be left permanently on your lens for protection - that is what I do to protect my pro-quality Nikon lens. Its state-of-the-art multi-coatings will degrade you image by so little it may not even be measurable. This is pretty much the Rolls Royce of filters, it cost a lot more but it is worth every penny. I highly recommend it.MIKE R : That would not be a good idea. Take it off indoors or low light situations or even if it's cloudy outside.DOUGLASS F : Not recommended. Most polarizers lose one to two stops of light. Recommend the use of a UV filter for lens protection both indoor and outdoor use. Then use other filters as required for their specific characteristics to enhance your subject matter and light conditions...GARY H : No. This filter removes 1 or more stops of light. I use multicoated UV filters for this purpose.

OK but extra expensive

I bought this 77 mm CPL based upon the manufacturer's adds proclaiming that this CPL had superior light transmission. Compared to my older Pro Master HGX CPL (2461) there is little if any difference. They are nearly twins and make similar quality claims. Camera light meter shows no increase in light transmission into the camera. However, the Pro master is a bit cheaper and you might want to look at it too.

Superb quality

This 77mm filter is superbly made, especially the quality of its 8 anti-reflection coatings. My only disappointment, is that for such an expensive filter, that it did not come with a made-to-measure carrying case like my same sized Hoya HD UV filter did.

Best CPL, period

Exceptional light passing; can even work under overcasting day. Smooth rotation; though it's so "slim" & be careful it might hurt the plastic lens thread :)

Worth the extra $ for the saved F Stops

Granted it's pricey, but as they say you get what you pay for. Although it's very thin to cut down on possible vignetting when stacking filters, it still somehow feels rugged in construction. The polarizing effects are as expected. But overall, it was well worth the extra cash to save the F stops over lesser, darker CPL filters.

Too thin - making it very hard to remove

It's not as dark as most polarizers so is good for slower zoom lenses. It's also very light weight which is good if you want to keep weight to a minimum, however, the frame is VERY thin and is very difficult to grip when removing it and the frame can distort if you squeeze it too hard making it even harder to remove. If you leave it "permanently" attached to a UV filter it's easier to put on/take off (but that negates its light weight). I'd recommend a filter with a beefier frame that's easier to put on and remove unless you really like this glass (which is good) and don't mind dealing with the ultra thin frame.

Great glass!

I use this on my 24-105mm F4L all the time. It cuts through haze and smog like a hot knife through butter. There is minimal light loss, auto focus is unaffected, and I love the brilliant color and glare reduction offered. Head and shoulders above an UV/haze filter.

Light rays which are reflected by any surface become polarised and polarising filters are used to select which light rays enter your camara lens.
• They allow you to remove unwanted reflections from non-metallic surfaces such as water, glass etc.
• They also saturate colors and increase contrast.
•Polarizers come in two variations but have the same effect. Linear polarizers work with older camera meters; Circurlar polarizers are designed for today's newer split-beam metering systems used in auto focus cameras. Check your camera's manual.
