Circular Black Mist
Create the perfect atmosphere for your photography or videography with NiSi Black Mist. Black Mist filters add an ethereal glow around light sources while preserving the clarity of images. Get the cinema look that reduces contrast, blooms, and softens the light from strong light sources while smoothing blemishes without affecting color balance. Give your images or video the Black Mist look.
NiSi Black Mist creates that cinematic look and is commonly used to soften wrinkles, blemishes and create a flattering image of a subject. It lowers contrast and highlights within the frame are diffused, helping to balance the tonal range among highlights and shadows.
Black Mist Circular Filters have strengths ranging from 1/8 to 1/2 stop - with 1/2 being the strongest effect. The filter effect becomes approximately twice as strong with each grade number increase.
If you have not used mist filters before, a good starting point for still photography is 1/4 and 1/8 for filming.
Suppress highlights and lift shadows
NiSi's Black Mist suppresses highlights and lifts shadows for well-balanced contrast. Light sources maintain a strong center with a pleasing glow from the light source.
Black Mist is for many applications.
Not only for portrait photography, Black Mist filters can also be used in other scenes, such as night photography, landscape, and still life... to create a cinematic atmosphere. Black Mist adds extra blooming and gradients to the highlights in your scene. Any direct light source will become more film-like, with a smoother, buttery texture around the highlights.
The Black Mist Kit includes Black Mist 1/4, 1/8 and a case.
Black Mist
Cinematography is the art and technique of capturing stunning visuals on film or digitally. One important aspect of this is the use of filters, which can be placed in front of the camera lens to alter the look and feel of the final image. One type of filter that is particularly useful in many situations is the black mist filter.
Black mist filters are a type of diffusion filter that is placed in front of the camera lens to soften the image and reduce contrast. This can be especially useful in situations where the lighting is harsh or when shooting in bright sunlight. The black mist filter creates a hazy, dreamlike effect that can add a sense of mood and atmosphere to the final image.
One of the main benefits of black mist filters is that they can help to reduce the appearance of skin imperfections, such as blemishes or wrinkles. This can be especially useful in close-up shots of actors or when shooting beauty or fashion photography. The black mist filter can also be used to soften harsh shadows and create a more even distribution of light, which can make the image appear more natural and pleasing to the eye.
Another benefit of black mist filters is that they can help to reduce the appearance of lens flare and other unwanted reflections. This can be especially useful when shooting in bright sunlight or when using a wide-angle lens.
Black mist filters are available in a variety of strengths and can be used to create a wide range of effects. Some photographers prefer to use a mild black mist filter for a subtle effect (1/8 strength), while others prefer a stronger filter for a more dramatic effect (1/2 strength). The choice of filter strength will depend on the specific shooting conditions and the desired final look of the image.
Black mist filters can be a valuable tool for any cinematographer looking to add a sense of mood and atmosphere to their images. They can help to reduce the appearance of skin imperfections, soften harsh shadows, reduce lens flare, and create a more even distribution of light. With the different strength options available, it is easy to find the right filter for any shooting situation. As with any filter or technique, it's always best to experiment with black mist filters to see how they can enhance your cinematography.
