ILFORD Film and Products

I recently started back into film B&W photography, I decided to expand my film experience, venturing out into different films. I used to use Kodak products on everything. So far my experience with Ilford film products is going very well. As I start to develop and work with Iford products an film I will give more reviews on how this film and developing products work for me as I'm out in the field a lot.

Delta 400 is a great mid-speed film. Very flexible to pushing and pulling.

I tested lots of B&W films side by side. While I liked the look of HP5+ I wanted a cleaner grain since I was still going to be digitizing afterwards. If you have to do digital PP, I think Delta is superior. Some people say the "Pro" Delta line is less forgiving than the older emulsions but I've had no problem pulling to 200 or pushing to 1600. Getting a bulk loader and 100ft of film is a game changer for really getting to know the film. It's easy to roll 10 exposure rolls for testing different developments and different cameras. It's a big money saver if you know there is one kind of film you're going to use the most and I think 400 is just a great "do anything" film.

All around great medium format film

I usually shoot Ilford HP5, as it's been my go to film for a long time. However, when I want a more modern look with finer grain and great tonality, I'll happily use Delta 400 over HP5. This film really shines in medium format, providing incredibly sharp details and great contrast.

My go-to for medium format portrait work

One of my favorite Ilford films for Medium Format. I love Delta in Perceptol for the smoother midtones in portrait work. It has a really nice wide latitude and almost zero grain at this size. Don't be afraid to over-expose it a bit and also try to have a decent dynamic range as it skews to the mids.

The best 400 speed B&W film?

Possibly the best ISO 400 film (B&W) available today. It produces sharp negatives; it’s tolerant of some under/over exposure, and when needed, can be pushed without any problem to E.I. 800 with no loss of quality. I’ve easily pushed it to E.I. 1600 and it’s delivered great results. It gives lush results @ E.I. 200 when slightly overdeveloped. My developer of choice is Ilford’s ID-11 (1:1). Personally, I overdevelop it (rated @ 400) by 15%. That produces a negative that I can scan and work in the darkroom that meets my personal needs. Others may get different results. Experiment to get your own optimum results.

Fresh fast film

This is a great black and white negative film. From what I've heard, Delta has less leeway for pushing compared to HP5, but anyway I still shot it at 800 and pushed to develop +1. What can I say; it was yuck weather outside so I was shooting indoors in low light. The attached photos are all from shooting at 800 on the camera settings and pushing one stop in development, my camera is a Minolta SRT-201. Pushing this film definitely made things grainy, but the grain is very pleasant and organic looking. I think that the general line that folks tout is that Ilford HP5 has more leeway for a wider range of exposure, but Ilford Delta is smoother and more nuanced when you're accurate and get the right exposure. Ordering from Adorama, I received the film quickly, packaged well, and the canisters I got were fresh and had more than a year left before expiring. Also, this is a rather good price as far as I can tell.

The film is easy to load and the film was easy to develop. This film used only 11 minutes during the developer cycle and used a 1:1 ratio.

A beautiful black and white film.

As a photographer that shoots weddings entirely in film, I like my films to have a consistent look throughout the day. Delta, which has rich blacks and a gorgeous grain pattern has a very similar tone and grain structure (albiet much less) of Ilford Delta 3200. These are the two black and white films I use for the day. An amazing latitude ensures that blacks are rich and highlight detail is always there. Rate at iso 200 and you're good to go!

It does it all

This is the most versatile 400 ASA film I have ever used. I use it in all lighting situations. The grain is extremely fine which enables me to make truly awesome large format (larger than 5 x8's) prints. The instructions on how to develop this film are clear and easy to follow. I have developed at 68 degrees and at 75 degrees and could find no difference in grain or negative quality. The blacks come out really rich and the whites are really white. I especially like I can save money by purchasing a 100 ft roll instead of buying individual rolls. Finally, when it says ASA 400 it really is 400. The film itself is stabile and gives just as good negatives 1 year after outdate on the box (if stored properly) as when just purchased.

Good all around film

I've just started developing my own film again and Delta 400 has been a great place to start. I get good printable negatives on a consistent basis, even when I miss the exposure just a bit (a common occurrence when using cameras without meters). I develop with Ilfotec DD-X which has worked very well.

Classic Staple

As one of the first films many art students use, delta400 has a warm place in many hearts. I use it because of it's consistency, which is also why it makes a great teaching tool. For "fun film" to blow through I prefer hp5 plus.

It's just always good

This is my favorite 400 speed black and white film. It is consistent and the grain is really appealing to me, and best of all it scans very well (I'm using an Epson V500, and occasionally a 4990), and unlike some other films, Delta 400 comes out looking refined but not brittle. I highly recommend this film.

Versatile

Delta 400 is a good all around film. I use it at 200 asa for low light studio figure work up to 1600 asa for night time street and event photography. I usually develop it -1 on time, but it depends on the subject and contrast of the scene. For photojournalism/street it works well at 400 or 800 and still holds a good range. Grain is appropriate for the speed.
