Lens Error

I got this 1 NIKKOR VR 10-30mm f/3.5-5.6 PD-ZOOM lens with my J4 camera. Right after warrantly, I keep geting "Lens Error" and I can't use the camera. I cannot believe this issue is not covered by warranty or service advisory.

Excellent kit lens in a small package.

The specs show why this is an excellent lens; 9 elements in 7 groups, including 1 ED and 4 aspherical elements. 'Aspherical lenses are lenses with complex curved surfaces, such as where the radius of curvature changes according to distance from the optical axis. Spherical lenses are subject to aberration and therefore cannot concentrate all the light into one point.' SLRGear wrote 'It's nice to see kit lenses which punch above their weight level, and it's certainly what we're seeing in this case.' As the review points out, this lens is perfect for someone who wants automatic focus and doesn't care about filters. If those things are important to you than you should buy a different lens. For me (the intended user of this type of lens) it's just peachy.

Not a lens for an enthusiast.

I got this lens bundled with a new Nikon 1 V3. The V3 is arguably the "high-end" of the Nikon 1 line, but this lens is definitely not a good match for it. It's an amateur's lens at best, and not even very good in that category. Two major complaints: (1) the power zoom feature is very difficult to control. It responds with a depressingly long time-lag, and almost always overshoots the intended mark, making it hard to compose and shoot quickly. (2) The lens does not accommodate filters!!! What is a filter-less lens doing paired with a higher-end camera? This is a lens that was built down to a price, and it shows. If this lens makes you happy, you don't need a Nikon 1. You need a cheap point-and-shoot camera.

What were they thinking?

Despite having 3 fewer elements, my copy of this lens is sharper (especially at the wide angle settings) than my example of the original standard zoom for the Nikon 1 cameras. But what in the world were the Nikon designers thinking of when they came up with its outsides? The lens has no threads for a filter or a shade or a real cap. If the Nikon 1 V3 is aimed at a more astute photographer than its predecessor, such a lack is a pretty vital impediment. The lens is capped by a set of leafs (like a diaphragm) set immediately between the first element and the front of the housing; these open and the lens extends when the camera is turned on. But if you hurriedly reach for the camera stored in a pocket or small carry-all case you're in serious danger of putting a finger or thumb through the "cap" and either jamming the works or scratching the front element of the lens with them, because this optical element sits directly behind the capping diaphragm. Granted, the new design makes the camera-lens package a little more pocketable, but at the above risks. And the absence of any method for mounting a lens hood or filter is a disaster for a competent photographer. Whatever gains may result from the new optical design are pretty much obliterated because of the losses suffered by the new lens housing. Even though its optics may not be quite as sharp, I prefer to use the original version of this lens in most cases. And by the way, that earlier version costs much less, too!
