Scanning old shots that I have not seen in 50 years. Personal photos mostly.

I still have to use this machine for a while to really get my arms around its usefulness.

The scanner itself does a very good job, can provide very high resolution scans, and is the reason for the high rating. There are two areas of concern. One is the automatic slide feeder. It jams very, very easily. This leads to problems with the software. With a problem, there are lots of resets on the software since it doesn't automatically pick up where it left off. Summary, good scans, bad feeder, poor user interface.

I was really pleased with results, my only complaint is Nikon's lack of support for this product, I had to boot-leg a driver for this scanner to get it to work in Windows 7

I believe Nikon makes the best film and slide scanners. I used this scanner in a class I took and was extremely pleased. So much so I bought it - I have a few 1000 slides to scan (at a $1 for just low res the Coolscan was worth it). I have yet reach the same level of satisfaction I experience in the class. Loading the software was problematic. I can not get a good scan - sometime I just get a streaky black square. Nikon support is unresponsive and I have to send slides out (and pay!) to be scanned. I have come to hate the Coolscan. It has become an expensive paperweigh. I am just so disappointed. But I don't think there is anything else to buy. I wish I could turn back time and never have bought this scanner. I am stuck and sooo unhappy with the Coolscan.

This product does not work properly with Intel Macs nor Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. Nikon has been aware of this issue for more than two years and has not updated the software. This is one of the best (hardware) slide scanners available, but the product is ruined for Mac users by ineffective Nikon software. If you own an Intel Mac and/or run Mac OS X Leopard, DO NOT buy this product unless you have a Windows PC you can use. Research this issue on the web and on Nikons own support site before making your purchase!

The manual gives everything you need to get the machine working well. I keep my computer in good shape. Clean the OS and defragment. The software that came with the Collscan 5000 will crash if you induce a crash. You can crash it if you click on a button before the led of the machine is solid. If it is flashing and you touch the software, it will crash. I get good quality pictures if I feed the slides one by one and make adjustments if required. This is impossible with multi slide feed.

I am scanning my "old" slides. Most of them are Kodachrome slides. Colors and resolution are perfect.

I am converting >8000 slides & negatives. The manual is light on explaining the features and adjustments of the software correction applications.

The scanner itself is very good. But the Nikon software is buggy and the scans are nowhere near as fast as advertised. How well the software will work and scan speed will probably depend greatly on the specifics of your computer configuration. It did not work reliably or fast on my Mac G4 running OS 10.3.9 with USB 1.1 connections. Probably would run much better with USB 2 connections. I was able to solve the software problem only by buying Vuescan software. Works great with Vuescan although still slow. With Vuescan my old Polaroid Sprintscan 4000 is actually faster than the dual sensor Nikon, although that may not be a fair comparison since the Nikon is running digital ICE which the Polaroid does not have. If I were doing it again I would not spend the extra bucks for the "Super" version, and be prepared to buy different software.

This is a great tool for those who have 35mm slides or negatives to scan to digital. I am very enthusiastic about it.

This model is an improvement on my previous model, the Coolscan 2000, and I thought that was great. I made this purchase as an amateur, so that I could recover old slides. I have been astounded at how much this piece of equipment has allowed me to recover and retouch a lifetime of slides. The resolution is wonderful. I have created 13" X 19" photos that are very sharp. That is the limitation of my printer - not the scanner. I recommend this scanner without reservation.

A wonderful alternative for a high-end digital camera. Just read the manual. Do some research and the learning curve is short.

Product is excellent but the auto slide feeder could be better. Difficulty with jamming of slides requires that one monitor the process on the auto feeder. Otherwise it has met my expectations.

Designed for use by imaging professionals, the SUPER COOLSCAN 5000 ED offers 135/IX240 film scanning at an amazing 20 seconds per image (including image transfer to display) at 4,000 dpi true optical resolution. Highly accurate color reproduction and representation of detail are made possible by the 16-bit A/D converter and 16-bit output channel.
The SUPER COOLSCAN 5000 ED targets primarily business users such as professional photographers and photo finishers, who require superb image quality and high-speed scanning capability. Private users of 135/IX240 format cameras advanced amateur SLR photographers, for example -- will welcome the scanner's speed and image quality.
Users who deal with numerous slide mounts and uncut film rolls will appreciate the increased ease of use and productivity afforded by optional accessories like the SLIDE FEEDER SF-210 and ROLL FILM ADAPTER SA-30. The SUPER COOLSCAN 5000 ED offers the performance and efficiency to make it the ideal digital archiving solution.
The scanner's 16-bit A/D input conversion enables a significantly broader dynamic range. It also works with the 16-bit output and the Multi-sample scanning feature to reveal details hidden in shadowy and highlighted portions of a scene, while virtually eliminating noise.
Super-fast 20-second scanning and enhanced image quality are supported by newly developed high-quality 2-line CCD sensors. At the heart of the SUPER COOLSCAN 5000 ED's excellent performance are Nikon's exclusive core technologies. The scanner incorporates Scanner Nikkor ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass lens elements for superior edge-to-edge sharpness, definition and contrast, as well as outstanding color fidelity. The employment of LED illumination enables the stable, precise provision of light with no risk of heat-related damage to films.
Furthermore, the LED requires neither maintenance nor warmup time. And for consistently accurate representation of color on displays and prints, the SUPER COOLSCAN 5000 ED features the Nikon Color Management System (Nikon CMS). Color data can be manipulated in multiple RGB color spaces, for unprecedented accuracy. These core technologies are what set Nikon COOLSCAN series scanners apart from the rest.
By simply attaching the optional ROLL FILM ADAPTER SA-30 to the SUPER COOLSCAN 5000 ED, batch-scanning of uncut film rolls comprising up to 40 frames becomes possible. The optional SLIDE FEEDER SF-210 lets you scan up to 50 mounted slides, giving you time-efficient, high-quality scanning capability.
The SUPER COOLSCAN 5000 ED also features unparalleled image restoration functions. Digital ICE4 Advanced, the newly upgraded digital image correction technology, consists of Digital ICE (Image Correction & Enhancement), Digital ROC (Reconstruction Of Color), Digital GEM (Grain Equalization & Management), and the brand-new Digital DEE (Dynamic Exposure Extender).
