The sharpness and colors are great. I get files roughly equal to a 12MP DSLR. Unfortunately, the black and white negatives do not scan as well. Grain is enhanced, and the digital ice doesn't work.

Two years ago, I missed Minolta scanner. This year I heard some info about COOLSCAN V that is UNPRODUCT. So that I ordered one here. It's a great film scanner, but poor expansion. The single slide adapter is a issue. The removal of dust and scratches from slides is magical, and the resolution is great.

The scanner is easy to set-up as well as operate. This is my new darkroom without the chemicals and I can continue to take film pictures and scan old negatives.

I have owned a Nikon Koolscan III and used it regularly for 8 years. It was still going strong, but I turned in my Power Mac G4 of 8 years for a 24" iMac, which would not take the SCSI power cord of the Koolscan III. Therefore, my only choice for a new film scanner was the Nikon Koolscan V-ED, as I trust the Nikon brand. My new Koolscan V-ED surpasses my old one with more advanced software and higher resolutions. I own a Nikon F-100 and several Nikon lenes. I am a semi-professional photographer and do some graphics. The only down point is that I find it slower than the Koolscan III, but worth it for a great job. One must know how to use the software with it to get the best results.

Love that this product is so compact. I have always been afraid that my archived negatives and slides might get accidentally damaged and I will lose those photos forever. Now I have a digital archive at very high resolution. I love it.

Excellent quality, but a little slow. But since I am basically scanning "old" slides once it does the job.

I am using it to scan family and travel slides, some from 30+ years ago. The removal of dust and scratches from old slides is magical, and the resolution is great. The challenge is to find a useful task during all those 40-60 second periods when the scanner is working, and I'm idling.

I have been impressed by the operation of the scanner, especially its ability to remove dust and scratches from the image while scanning. This feature does add to scan time, but even with it turned on, scan times are acceptable. The single slide adapter is easier to use than multiple-slide clips in other scanners - if you're not going to spend the money for an automatic feeder, one-at-a-time is the way to go.

I am quite satisfied with the CoolScan V. Easy set-up with Windows XP. Was able to produce first scan within 20 minutes of opening the box. Digital ICE does a fine job of removing dust/debris particles. I am very pleased with the resolution and color accuracy of my E-6 slide scans.

The system works slower than anticipated, but results are excellent, especially in color negatives. Color positives or B&W negatives are better handled by rephotographing them with a micro-nikkor lens on a lightbox, using flash to expose. Works much faster.

I use this scanner at home to scan all my slides now. This easily beats out using my HP Scanjet with the slide adapter. The colors are better as well as the resolution, among other things.

Good results BUT very slow...Not good for converting large numbers of slides to digital images

My first step into the digital world was spending weeks on end scanning thousands of negatives and slides with my Nikon Coolscan. I have since made some amazing digital prints 13x19 and larger from the files. The software is pretty easy to navigate around. The operation may seem a little slow at times, but the results are well worth it.

This Nikon Scanner is good. I got it because I trust Nikon, but not enough to get a Digital Camera yet. So, I went for this scanner and I am getting better reading of my negatives. The only con I found is that with the Software provided you can't clean B&W film from specks, but I found that you can do this using VueScan and even get multiscan and multi exposure readings. Other than that, excellent scanner for a good price.

The scanner is easy to set-up as well as operate. This is my new darkroom without the chemicals and I can continue to take film pictures and scan old negatives.
An economical, friendly, high-performance film scanner, the COOLSCAN V ED is designed to be easy to operate, even for first-time scanner users. A true optical resolution of 4,000 dpi and 14-bit A/D input conversion allow the scanner to produce scans at a level of quality previously only available with higher-priced models. Scan speed is also surprisingly fast, the COOLSCAN V ED can scan an image in only 38 seconds (including image transfer and display).
Users who wish to print out images of films of scanned images or attach them to email, and also those who are involved in, or wish to begin, archiving of old and new films in digital image form as well as personal or business web-page designers will find the COOLSCAN V ED both simple to operate and long on quality. Flatbed scanners don't measure up when it comes to image quality.
Further enhancing the value of the COOLSCAN V ED is a lineup of accessories that makes possible the scanning of various film types, including 35mm strips, slide mounts and IX-240 cartridges.
High-resolution scanning at 4,000 dpi enables the production of strikingly detailed images. The 14-bit A/D input conversion and 8-/16-bit outputs deliver true, vibrant color. To ensure excellent overall image quality, the COOLSCAN V ED incorporates a high-quality CCD sensor.
Nikon's exclusive core technologies figure largely in the surprisingly high overall performance of the entry-level COOLSCAN V ED. The most important component in high-quality scanning is the lens, and the Scanner Nikkor ED glass elements employed in the lens effectively reduce chromatic aberration and image distortion. This results in superior sharpness and contrast. Nikon's own LED illumination technology means no maintenance, no warmup time, and no risk of heat-related damage to films. The Nikon Color Management System offers consistent color representation on monitors and prints.
The COOLSCAN V ED also features high-grade image enhancement technology. Digital ICE4 Advanced, the new and improved digital image correction function, consists of Digital ICE (Image Correction & Enhancement), Digital ROC (Reconstruction Of Color), Digital GEM (Grain Equalization & Management), and the brand-new Digital DEE (Dynamic Exposure Extender). And Scan Image Enhancer makes brightness and color adjustment one-touch simple.
Add a plug-and-play USB 2.0 interface to facilitate image transfer and you've got an affordable film scanner which offers the operational ease you'd expect, and the quality your images deserve.
