Questions & Answers

Luiz Claudio M : Is it the same slide feeder for the nikon film scanner 4000 and the nikon film scanner 5000? Can I use the slide feeder for 50 slides that I use in the 4000 in the 5000?VIRGINIA F : yes. I believe this works with the Coolscan 4000 or 5000PAUL S : If you own one for the 4000, it will work on the 5000. Check the model number on the one you own (typically on the underside). If it reads SF-210 then you're good to go.
Jari S : Hello I already bought SF-210, but I have a problem to get it work with my 5000 ED and my computer. By itself the scanner work well, but with SF-210 FDUtility says: "There`s no SuperCoolscan 5000 ED ... with SF-210 Feeder adapter equipped." I work with XP pro. Do anybody have idea, where is the problem? Thanks JariGREGORY K : 1. Are you using the NikonScan 4.03 software? 2. Is the "power" light at the face of the SF-210 indeed turning on after you insert the unit into the scanner body? 3. Have you checked the rear interface plug of the SF-210, and also looked inside the Coolscan itself (with a lamp) to check for bent or possibly missing interface pins?KELLY G : I purchase the SF-200 Slide Feed because it was supposed to work with the SuperCoolscan 4000 ED, however, I am having similar problems. The scanner works fine without the feeder and when you use the feeder it gives me trouble. I have Windows 7, and Vista and XP pro on 3 different computers. I loaded the software in all of them and they don't seem to work. I don't know if it is the software or if it is the feeders themselves. I am very unhappy with the product and wish I would have never purchased the scanner or the feeder because the scanner is only as good as the slide feeder when you have many slides to do. IVIRGINIA F : We have several of these feeders on SuperCoolscan 5000 and 4000 models. We have not had any problem except occasionally we have to remove the bulk loader and re-insert it in case it was not seated properly. We also recommend keeping the cover closed to help keep dust out of the scanner.WILLIAM B : I used VueScan as the scanning software and it worked just fine with the scanner and SF-210 slide feeder. I archived approximately 3000 old ( some 50 years ) slides The gap adjustment is very critical. With uniform slides and a correct adjustment I could easily scan 50-100 slides without a jam. I was running Vista as an operating system. VueScan supports a very wide selection of scanners and I really like the idea of using the same utility for virtually all my scanning. I hope this helps, but it did not directly answer your question.

Constantly jams

This device is intended to make life easier and feed a batch of slides. Instead it makes life frustrating. It constantly jams and takes a lot of steps to restart. A very poorly engineered product from both hardware and software perspectives.

Good time-saving slide feeder

I've used this to speed up the processing of digitizing my multitudes of Kodachrome slides. It certainly saves a lot of time (as opposed to feeding slides one at a time). However, it is a delicate item, and imperfections in the slide (especially slightly bent slides) will jam the unit. You MUST follow the units instructions (especially calibrating the unit to the slide's thickness) to the letter. Jamming increases in frequency with higher number of batches, e.g., >20 slides, probably due to the spring holder that keeps the slides stacked. I find smaller batches (10-20) almost always runs fine. (Jams are always the result of slide imperfections).

Big time saver, good device

I was hesitant to purchase this item based on a number of reviewer's complaints about jamming. The sales person at Adorama stressed two important things that (usually) prevents this: 1) care in setting the slide feeders adjuster for the slide mount thickness; and 2) don't do more than 30 slides at a time. So far, I've been very pleased with the unit running 15-30 slide batches, and the only time jams occurred were the result of the imperfections in the slide mount. Follow the Nikon instructions to the letter. This device has really been a time saver in my scanning old slides; I've scanned over 400 slides in the past month, and it's been great. And I've recouped over 1/2 the costs of having a professional outfit doing (the same thing) for me.

Great Nikon Auto Slide Feeder

It was great buying from Adorama. The item was in stock and shipped out the next day. I am using the slide feeder on a Nikon Coolscan 4000 ED and the improved SF-210 works great. If you go on the internet to under SF-210 Slide Feeder Jams at [@] you only have to use a razorblade knife and remove at an angle a small amount of the plastic material on the top and bottom of the slide pusher. After making this modifacation, I have scanned about 500 slides so far with no jams. The slide feeder works wonderful. Another feature over the SF-200 is no more credit card modifacation needed. Nikon has added an adjustable slide feed slot. Its not cheap but if you have a lot of slides to scan it is worth the price.

Not for slides with round edges

Most slides now-a-days come with rounded edges and will jam this product very frequently. Nikon tech support acknowledges there is a jamming problem with rounded edges, however there is no indication they are going to do anything about it. For the price, this product should not be exhibiting this kind of problem.

Works fantastic with an asterisk

I've used this to scan about 20,000 images. I've learned a couple of tricks along the way. One, I still use a battery on the edge of the slide. A single triple a Battery seems to work exceptionally well. With that in place It only seems to Jam about one out of ten batches. The exception to this seems to be plastic slide mounts they are more finicky. Many of the slides I've scanned date back to the 30's and 40's I usually know which ones are going to jam it up. Basically if the inside edge of the mount is scuffed, it will likely jam. I tend to scan these at the beginning or the end of the batch. All the caveats in place this is an excellent product. I only wish I could batch 500 slides instead of 50.

Much better than SF-200, but not perfect

A much improved product over the previous version, however very typical looking slides get stuck for no reason when you are scanning large batch jobs.

A better mousetrap?

I've scanned hundreds (and hundreds) of slides using the SF-210. When it works it's great, but it jams easily, and when it jams you often have to cancel the scan job and begin again with the remaining slides, which is time-consuming. You'd think that the technology to feed a slide into a projector would be pretty solid by now, but Nikon doesn't appear to have it down. On the other hand, it's still a whole lot faster to use this feeder than to do it by hand.
