Probably THE most expensive lens in my arsenal. I had a off brand crop sensor 11-24mm that I was using for real estate. After slapping this lens on my camera and seeing what I've been losing (with the other lens), the price tag became a lot more digestible. Plus, with the trade-in trade-up, tax free, 36 month free financing, why not?

I have been using this lens now for the past few years and love it! I usually grab this lens when I am doing helicopter photo flights with others or just for personal use images for helicopter photo flights. The ability to quickly and smoothly zoom in and out from 12mm "all the way" 24mm with a short twist is great. For those that need / want to use drop in filters they are sold separately and used in the rear of the lens as the front element on this lens is INSANE. It's super bulbous and really sick (in a good way...). I love the constant F2.8 abilities though for the most part I will tend to stop down just a tiny bit for landscape. If you are a landscape photographer in any capacity, this is a killer lens to add to your collection. I personally am not into street photography though this would be a really killer lens to add to your collection if you are into those ultra wide angles or are shooting in really tight spaces. Tack sharp, killer quality, another unreal lens from the GM collection within Sony's growing line up!

I used 16-35 Zeiss before, comparing with my new 12-24 GM , GM got a clear and sharp picture, excellent quality, just only more weight , I've already given 16-35 Zeiss to my nephew.

I absolutely adore this lens. It makes it had to look at another wide angle lens the same. 12-24 is perfect before going into the single digits of wide lenses and those get weird. When I go on my photo hikes I love the 12-24 for being able to get everything in the same shot whether it's photo or video. If I had to say one flaw of this is, it's not great for one handed vlogging gets kind of heavy for that.

I have several GM lenses such as 24mm GM 1.4, 35mm GM 1.4 and 70-200mm GM 2.8 II. I also used to have 24-70mm GM 2.8 but I sold that lens last year to buy the mark II version, which I currently preordered. Once the new 24-70mm GM 2.8 II arrives, it would complete the holy trinity of zoom lenses. I contemplated whether to get the 16-35mm GM 2.8 or 12-24mm GM 2.8 but I decided on the wider one because of 3 reasons. First, 12mm is super wide and I did not want to regret down the road wanting wider lens if I had bought the 16-35mm. Second, although 16-35mm GM 2.8 is significantly cheaper than the 12-24mm GM 2.8, 16-35 is pretty old now and it is ready for a mark II version. New 16-35mm needs to have XD linear motors for faster autofocus like the 12-24mm. At the same time I did not want to wait 1-2 more years for Sony to update the lens. Third, I love the look and the feel of the 12-24mm GM 2.8. Spherical front lens element makes adding filter difficult but I actually love the round look of the front glass. I mostly take portraits of children moving around so fast autofocus is important and this lens does just that. At 12mm, distortions are significant so I find myself trying something new to make the portrait work. I actually welcome this challenge because it forces me to be little more creative and the end result looks very different than my other portraits taken with more standard focal lengths. Since this is a zoom lens, 24mm is still available if you don?t want to deal with distortions that occur at 12mm. I sometimes take landscape and architectural photos with this lens also and I love how this camera is able to capture scenes other lenses cannot. Although this is not the best portrait lens, I often find myself putting 12-24mm on my A1 because the pictures look interesting and different. In general lens performs well and it is very sharp. Sharpness does struggle a bit in a low lighting especially when the subject is constantly moving at 12mm with lowest aperture setting possible. Lastly, once you start shooting 12mm, 16 mm will not seem wide enough. I sometimes wish that the lens was even wider than 12mm because I have become used to it.

Unlike other lenses we have there is no noticeable bending or distortion of the picture with this lens. We were both extremely impressed by that as well as the clarityof picture especially in low light. WOW!

The FE 12-24mm f2.8 takes you from wide to extremely wide with a bright constant f2.8 aperture. It?s a lens for those who want the best wide-angle performance I have a range of Sony?s premium lenses and I am very impress with Sony?s optics Extreme wide angle-of-view at 12mm focal length. Extensive weather sealing plus fluorine coating against moist and dust. I purchased thus lens for architectural photography and also use it for landscapes

No other better choice for a super wide zoom working at f 2.8 from 12mm to 24mm. It's extremely useful for interior design & architecture shooting. For outdoor and landscape, 16-35 would be a more reasonable option though.

I bought the G Master 12-24mm to supplement my 24-70. I now own 4 G Master lenses and this one is by far the best - and my new favorite! Lines are straight and not curved all the way to the edges and photos are super sharp! Auto focus is awesome. Now if they would just give me a new 70-200 and 100-400 to equal this level of quality.

I went storm chasing with this lens. When I compared my pics to my friends pics I captured the whole cloud structure with little distortion -- their pics weren't even close. Worth the $$$.

Love the lens. Super sharp. Great color. Super Fast Focus. Cannot believe. Really need to bring out updated 24-70 & 70-200. They just cannot compete. They are like third party lenses compared to this one.

Using this lens has been a joy. I used a 14mm prime before and it was just not wide enough. My real estate clients love the photos. This lens does a fantastic job in handling the flares when taking photos of the exteriors on a sunny day. This lens is super sharp even wide open at f2.8. The only gripes I have are the price ($3k!) and the distortion at 12mm which I expected with this lens and is correctable in post.

First I am only a Hobbyist, Second I went Sony in 2014 with the A7S because I did HDR at the time but in 6 mos I discovered the magic of Milky Way Photography. The wider and faster (f/) everyone craves to have. This Lens is the GOLD Standard for Low Light and Astro Milky Way as well as Ultra Wide Photography landscape. I did several Astro star captures and there is no coma (dove stars) everything near and far "AT Night" is Sharp and in focus. YES Expensive. If just starting there are other lenses that give the same performance to work with that cost less FE 1224 f/4 G and the E 1018 f/4 (works in full frame @12mm to 18mm but a 90 deg FOV @12mm) also the FE 1635 f/4 ZA (very sharp stars). After buying and using many NON Sony lenses after reviews that said THEY were great I found they were NOT. I sold those to buy this one. Six years of Star filled skies my Sony lenses were always the best, I have had many wasted nights with other lenses. Sony knows the limits of lenses, just stay Sony!!

Ultra-wide F2.8 12-24mm zoom
At the 12mm end of its range, this 12-24-mm constant F2.8 zoom lens offers an ultra-wide angle of view. An innovative optical design works with Sony's advanced XD Linear Motors to deliver outstanding G Master image quality in a lightweight lens that also features fast, precise autofocus, smooth control, and solid reliability.
New optics with the largest XA element
Three XA (extreme aspherical) elements, including the largest ever made for any Alpha lens, combine with one aspherical element in an innovative optical design that achieves stunning G Master resolution throughout the image area.
Minimal aberration enhances sharpness
Two Super ED (Extra-low Dispersion) and three ED glass elements suppress chromatic aberration that can degrade resolution in this type of large-aperture lens, ensuring that color smearing does not occur anywhere in the image area so that maximum sharpness is maintained throughout.
Crisp images in difficult light
A new Nano AR Coating II that can be evenly applied to large lens elements or highly curved element surfaces has been developed to suppress internal reflections that can cause flare and ghosting for clear, crisp imagery. Despite the lens's wide angle of view, Nano AR Coating II maintains high clarity and contrast throughout the entire image, even in difficult light. ( [A] Conventional coating [B] Nano AR Coating II [1] Conventional coating [2] Nano AR Coating II [3] Glass [4] Highly curved glass surface [5] Reflected light)
Surprisingly small and lightweight
An innovative optical design with four aspherical elements, including three XA types, plus a mechanical design that features high-performance XD Linear Motors, in a compact 12-24mm constant F2.8 zoom that weighs only 29.88 ounces. This lens is ideal for landscapes, night scenes, and architecture, while providing extra mobility for active sports shooters who want to use ultra-wide angles.
Gorgeous G Master bokeh
While the extremely high surface precision of the lens's XA elements effectively suppresses onion-ring bokeh, fine tuning of the its spherical aberration characteristics during both design and manufacture, plus a nine-blade circular aperture, contribute to exquisitely smooth, creamy G Master bokeh.
Floating mechanism achieves excellent resolution from infinity to close focus
A floating focus mechanism that divides the lens's focus group into two independently controllable groups is extremely effective in minimizing aberration that varies with focusing distance. Top performance is maintained from infinity to close-up focus, throughout the entire zoom range. The floating mechanism not only contributes to outstanding close-up performance, but also outstanding sharpness with subjects at any distance.
Constant F2.8 maximum aperture for flexible moviemaking
With a constant F2.8 maximum aperture at all focal lengths, aperture does not change while zooming so that exposure, shutter speed, and ISO sensitivity can remain consistent while shooting movies. When used on an APS-C body or with a Super 35 angle of view, the wide end of the zoom range becomes equivalent to 18 mm on a full-frame body, providing a very useful zoom range for moviemaking.
Dust and moisture-resistant design
A dust- and moisture-resistant design provides the reliability needed for outdoor use in challenging conditions.
Fluorine front-element coating
The front lens element features a fluorine coating that repels water, oil, and other contaminants, while making it easier to wipe off any contaminants or fingerprints that do become attached to the lens surface.
Natural, linear manual focus response
Linear Response MF ensures that the focus ring responds directly and linearly to subtle control when focusing manually. Focus ring rotation translates directly to a corresponding change in focus, so control feels immediate and precise.
Fast, precise autofocus and tracking
A total of four XD Linear Motors, two for each of the lens's focus groups, contribute to fast, precise autofocus and tracking that augment the many advantages provided by Sony's native lenses. This advanced system makes full use of the speed potential provided by high-performance camera bodies, making it easier to capture significant moments in the most dynamic sports or other types of action. AF operation is also quiet with minimal vibration.
Rear filter holder
Standard sheet-type ND, color correction, and other filters can be inserted into the lens's rear filter holder for expanded expressive capability. A cutting template for sheet filters is supplied.
Easy manual focus/autofocus switching
A focus mode switch that allows instant switching between auto and manual focus mode can be a great advantage when shooting subjects or situations that require fine manual focus adjustment.
Customizable focus hold button
A conveniently placed focus hold button not only offers easy focus hold control, but can be assigned to a variety of other functions from a menu accessed via the camera body.
Integral lens hood with dedicated lens cap
An integral lens hood effectively blocks off-axis light that can cause flare and ghosting. The supplied lens cap covers the hood, attaching easily and locking securely with the hood at any angle.
