I bought this camera as a second hand camera, though I suspect it was a demonstration model in mint condition. I ceased to be amazed at the quality of the images compared to my old a 99. I did find the camera a little small for my big hands, so added the adapter to it, making it easier to balance the lenses. The menus were a bit daunting at first but once I got used to them. As with the a 99. I now have no problem adjusting things as needed. Having used it for the last several months. I am well pleased. I made this choice.

After 8 weeks of careful scrutiny for wildlife scenes and casual photography I picked the a7m4 over the a7r5 I felt the 4 serves me better. I want to compose the image not rely on ai focusing. And I wanted good but not huge image sizes. Overjoyed. 24-105 and 70-200

Such a beautiful camera to use. I'm doing a lot of football photography and the images I'm getting are superb even in JPEG format. My only criticism is the menus are far too complex. I stick to aperture priority with ISO set to determine speed for the light available. Simoles

This camera is not, of course, now the latest model but I don't anticipate upgrading again just yet as the M4 version is adequate to my needs just now. Firstly, about the increased pixel count: Did I feel the need for 61MPx? No. But, now that I have it, I am happy to get the benefits. Lenses that were good enough for the 42MPx A7RIII have proved perfectly adequate for the greater pixel count camera. Also, the ability to crop more than before is used and enjoyed. I have not found any significant loss of dynamic range or per-pixel quality in the newer sensor. Here are some other aspects of the A7RIV that I really appreciate * Better screen than the A7RIIII - seems larger and with greater pixel count. * I love the My Menu facility which allows up to 30 selected items from the full menu across 5 'pages'. You can also set My Menu to appear first by default when you press the Menu button. I actually use this more than the Fn button, which I also like. * I also love being able to allocate three groups of settings to the 1, 2, 3 positions of the Mode dial. I have position 1 set for action photography with shutter speed pre-set to (say) 1/1000th, aperture to F/2.8, ISO on Auto, focus mode set to C, and focus area set to subject tracking. Position 3 is set up for manual focusing at 1/00th sec, F/4, ISO 320. I can, of course, alter these shooting parameters on-the-fly using the front and rear dials (which does not alter my pre-set values). By the way, subject tracking is really good in reasonable lighting and still useful in poor lighting. I have owned each of previous three version of the A7R and have welcomed the improvements with each model.

I won this in an ebay auction for a fair price. Coming from Canon 6D Mark II I use a Metabones adapter for my Canon lenses but find the autofocus is slow with respect to sports kind of photo's (dog running toward me, bird in flight). I recently got my Tamron 28-200 f/2.8-5.6 which is a great small and lightweight combination. High ISO produces a similar noisy image compared to my Canon but the noise reduction seems to work much better and the high resolution provides plenty of cropping or scale-down options. I love having dials for all variables of the exposure and customizable buttons, menu and quickmenu. Downside is the limited touch functionality, having to browse the many somewhat unsorted menu's for the options I need and the lack of a fully articulating screen especially when shooting low in portrait orientation. Also dust collecting on the sensor which is always exposed is annoying. This is all compared to the Canon I was used to for the past 5 years

I upgraded from a A7R3 wanting the new design and grip and not really thinking about image quality. 42MP files were great from my old camera. Having used the new model now quite a lot I find the detail in the files fantastic along with the huge cropping ability very useful. The series 4 camera bodies from Sony are just fantastic whether you choose the R models or not. Well worth the upgrade.

Bought this just under a month ago. I had been a little concerned about the huge file sizes but that is the price you pay for fantastic resolution. This gives great flexibility to crop images and I now no longer need to buy a converter for my 200-600 zoom and no need to cope with the associated loss in maximum aperture. If smaller file sizes/ max resolution are needed, you can adjust the jped quality or swap to the aps-c mode. Low light performance is excellent having just photographed our local theatre group's dress rehearsal with no flash. It would have been nice to have retained the top left hand dials thjat I have on my A9 Mkii

I been around cameras, from 6x9 boxcamera thru Contax/Rollei/Nikon/Canon and now my first mirrorless here.I struggled with the menu logic and setup.Yes,it's a good camera but with notable needed adjustments. 1 Please intro a reduced quality RAW size (without having to switch to aps c crop mode!! - just like Nik with two smaller size raw options! 2 Please introduce one switch that will activate movie mode. 3 Please introduce one switch to activate and deactivate liveview screen. 4 I do NOT need the screen on continuously and only really need it to automatically review my images. 5 The fact that the touch control is on and I use the evf means that the camera focuses where my nose hits the screen and not the central figure which is then out if focus. I'm used to Canon/Nik setup logic and I do believe that you should aim to standardise to this protocol and LOGIC. This will improve speed of operation and win you more sales for this otherwise good camera.Yes,I like it but it needs tweaking to get it right for the wider pro and experienced hobbyist The battery power reserve can be an issue for reportage snappers and PLEASE FIX IT SO THAT, like Nik,I CAN ACTION/deactivate LIVEVIEW FAST !! I was lucky to meet Japanese media reporters expertly set my camera up for me and without this chance meeting I would have struggled. I know that this camera can be better and I'm happy to assist in making it so.Im @fastphil200 on IG and eager to engage.

I bought this a while ago as an upgrade from an A7R2. It is an excellent camera for shooting detailed subjects on a tripod or handheld in good light. It's highly configurable and has lots of useful features. It only has two weaknesses - very poor IS and an oddly shaped grip. Even with Dual IS it can only match smaller sensor cameras with good IBIS when you use very large and expensive cameras. It's odd that it lacks features like focus stacking that are common on other cameras, so you probably would want to pair it with another camera with more features. I love it.

I?ve had this camera about a month now and it hands down better than my previous system (lumix) in all ways bar 1. Lumix ergonomics have the edge. But where it matters the a7R IV is just amazing. The tracking is spectacularly fast and accurate. The live view finder shows you a stunningly accurate picture. I love the custom buttons to get quick access to changes on the fly. Finally the 61mp are staggering. Zoom in to any image and the details remain sharp. Buy this camera and you won?t regret it!

I bought a7r IV one month ago. I used my new a7r IV with new FE 200-600mm telephoto lens for bird shooting. The camera autofocus system is very fast and accurate, with 61MP high pixel cmos, I am so happy can get sharp and nice bird photos even for some small and fast flying birds.

On the face of it it has about twice the resolution of the alpha 7Rmk1 but that is not the reason I bought it. The major advantage is the speed of focusing (and its accuracy).

I was torn between this camera and the A9ii as a wildlife photographer. I opted for this high resolution camera in order to get better results from cropping. I would say that it has taken me at least 6 months to learn how to use this camera in a way that gets the best out of it. When shooting wildlife, it needs good light levels, especially when teamed with a telephoto lens; and this means that you have to challenge all your assumptions about speeds and ISO levels and balance them in quite a narrow range for best results (I find 1/3200 and ISO around 1600 with the 200600G lens is the ideal window). Noise reduction software is therefore a must but you would be amazed at how images clean up with ISO up to 8000. When in the operating range the detail is amazing. I would love it to have better AF for birds in flight and (bizarrely) you cannot use animal eye detection on continuous shooting mode, only human eye detection. Sony need to address this and also include bird eye detection in future upgrades as with the A1 In summary, a great camera if you are a confident photographer. If you are not, better opting for the A9ii

Sony Electronics Introduces High-resolution
Alpha 7R IV Camera with World's First 61.0 MP
Back-illuminated, Full-frame Image Sensor
Unprecedented Highest Resolution and Widest Dynamic Range for - Alpha System, Combined with High-speed Performance and a Lightweight, Compact Body
Sony's highest resolution full-frame camera ever, the new Alpha 7R IV delivers stunning image quality with high resolution and wide dynamic range while maintaining outstanding focusing performance, high-speed continuous shooting and much, much more.
A New Level of Image Quality
The new Alpha 7R IV features a newly developed 35mm full-frame, back-illuminated CMOS image sensor with a resolution of 61.0 MPii, the world's firsti of its kind. The new sensor's back-illuminated structure and effective noise reduction techniques combine to deliver extremely low-noise and high-sensitivity performance, ensuring the absolute maximum image quality. The camera also boasts an impressive 15-stopiii dynamic range at low sensitivities, resulting in smooth natural gradations ranging from deep shadows to highlights, and utilizes algorithms from many of the latest Alpha cameras to maintain outstanding color reproduction.
This new full-frame model is equipped with an innovative 5-axis, optical in-body image stabilization system that has been fine-tuned to support its high-resolution shooting capacity, resulting in a shutter speed advantage of 5.5-steps . Additionally, the shutter unit assembly has been carefully redesigned to reduce even the slightest movement that may cause blur. The Alpha 7R IV also includes Sony's highest resolution viewfinder ever, a 5.76 million dot UXGA OLED Tru-finder EVF. About 1.6x the resolution of the EVF in the Alpha 7R III, this new viewfinder provides an extremely accurate, true-to-life depiction of the scene being framed. The display quality can be set to 'Standard' or 'High' mode, and to either 60 fps or 120 fps refresh rate to best match the subject and shooting conditions.
Additionally, the new camera features an evolved Pixel Shift Multi Shooting mode that composites up to 16 full-resolution images. In this mode, the camera precisely shifts the sensor in one pixel or half-pixel increments to capture 16 separate pixel-shifted images containing a total of 963.2 million pixels of data, which are then composited into a 240.8 million pixel (19008 x 12672 pixels) image using Sony's "Imaging Edge" desktop application . Ideal for photographing architecture, art or any other still life subject, this enhanced mode produces photographs with a level of detail and color accuracy that is simply stunning.
Shooting and Focusing Speed
The innovative new Alpha 7R IV full-frame mirrorless camera can shoot full resolution images at up to 10 fpsiv with continuous, accurate AF/AE tracking for up to approximately seven secondsv in full-frame, full-resolution mode (JPEG / RAW), and approx. three times as long in APS-C crop mode delivering 26.2MPii images. These high-speed options ensure that fast moving subjects can be captured with extreme accuracy and incredible image detail.
The upgraded focusing system of the Alpha 7R IV is comprised of 567 focal-plane phase-detection AF points that cover approximately 74 percent of the image area. There are also 425 contrast AF points that add extra precision and reliability for low light and other situations that are best served by contrast AF. The higher AF sensor density and refined tracking algorithms of the new camera produce a notable improvement in tracking performance, allowing complex subject motion and sudden subject movements to be reliably tracked with greater precision than ever.
The Alpha 7R IV also supports Real-time Eye AF, which employs artificial intelligence to detect and process eye location data in real-time, locking and maintaining focus on the subject's eye with extreme precision. This is available for both animal and human subjects, with either animal or human Eye AF mode selectable depending on the shooting situation. Real-time Trackingvii is available as well, which utilizes a newly developed subject recognition algorithm to ensure the ultimate subject tracking and persistence of the focusing system. There is also an anti-flicker shooting mode, which automatically detects the presence of fluorescent or artificial lighting in a shooting environment to minimize any impact on the final image.
Enhanced Connectivity for Professional Workflow
Sony's new Alpha 7R IV full-frame camera is equipped with a variety of advanced connectivity features designed to enhance professional workflow. The new model includes wireless LAN functionality to support the conventional 2.4 GHz band, as well as a high-speed 5 GHz band for faster, more stable data transfer. Wireless PC remote connectivity (wireless tethering shooting)viii is also available on the new Alpha 7R IV, a first for Sony cameras. Requested by many working professionals, this allows for much more freedom in studio and location shoots, letting the photographer move around freely and without restriction.
In addition to high-speed Wi-Fi½ and wireless PC connectivityviii, the new full-frame camera is equipped with a SuperSpeed USB (USB 3.2 Gen 1) USB Type-C connector that supports extremely fast wired data transmission, with almost doubled data transfer speed achieved in combination with Sony's Imaging Edge software (compared to the Alpha 7R III). It also supports FTP data transfer with background transfer capability, allowing photographers to send images to a specified FTP remote server while they are still shooting or reviewing images.
To support an efficient, high-speed, connected professional workflow, Sony has announced version 2.0 of its "Imaging Edge" desktop applications ('Remote'/'Viewer'/'Edit')xiii. The 'Remote' application allows users to control cameras and monitor live shooting on their PC screen; the 'Viewer' application is used to quickly preview, rate and select photos from large libraries; and the 'Edit' application can develop RAW data into high-quality photos for delivery.
To maximize convenience in image transfer, when utilizing the latest version of Sony's Imaging Edge Mobile application , the camera can now transfer images to a connected smartphone even if the camera's power is set to OFF
High-resolution 4K and Professional Filmmaking Features
In addition to its impressive still image capabilities, the new Alpha 7R IV performs exceptionally well as a serious filmmaking tool, offering 4K (3840x2160 pixels) video recording across the full width of the image sensor, and full pixel readout without pixel binning in Super 35mm modeix. This ensures high-quality 4K footage with exceptional detail and depth. S-Log 2 and S-Log 3 are also available to maximize color grading flexibility, with S-Log 3 offering a total of 14-stops of dynamic range. Hybrid Log-Gamma (HLG) is also available on the Alpha 7R IV to support an Instant HDR workflow.
For video autofocus, the versatile new full-frame camera utilizes a refined Fast Hybrid AF system that achieves faster, smoother, more stable autofocus during video shooting - even if an object temporarily moves in front of the intended subject. The camera also includes Touch Tracking functionality during movie shooting, allowing the user to simply touch the screen on their intended subject for instant acquisition.
The new Alpha 7R IV debuts Real-time Eye AF for movie shooting, a first in any of Sony's cameras. When activated, the eye of a subject is automatically tracked with high precision and reliability, allowing the shooter to focus on the content itself as opposed to what is in focus or not. The aforementioned Touch Tracking functionality will also automatically initiate Eye AF when a human subject is selected.
Another notable video feature is the addition of a digital audio interface to the camera's Multi Interface Shoe (MI Shoe), allowing a direct, digital connection from the new ECM-B1M Shotgun Microphone or XLR-K3M XLR Adaptor Kit for clear, low-noise and high-quality audio recording. Interval shooting for creating time-lapse videos is available, as well as full HD recording at up to 120 fps, Slow and Quick Motion functions and much more.
Enhanced Build, Design and Customizability
The new Alpha 7R IV has several upgrades to its design and usability, with many adjustments being implemented directly from the voice of Sony's professional community.
Enhanced Build, Design and Customizability The new Alpha 7R IV has several upgrades to its design and usability, with many adjustments being implemented directly from the voice of Sony's professional community.
Additional enhancements to the body design include an improved grip for greater comfort and a more sure hold within the hand; an increase in the diameter and feedback for the 'AF-ON' button; a new multi-selector joystick design for improvised control; an exposure compensation dial lock button; and a redesigned shape and new position for the rear dial. A strong request from many professional users, the new camera also includes two UHS-II compatible media slots, allowing for higher overall capacity and faster read/write speeds.
For added convenience, camera setting registration is expanded. Now, almost all camera settings can be saved to, and read from, an inserted memory card. Up to 10 combinations can be saved to any individual card and loaded into any camera body of the same model.
