A digital camera I've been waiting for, the 12mp sensor delivers superb image quality - while the pixel count is low by modern standards cramming 40 or 50 mp into the same space is unnecessary for a photographer who is able to frame the shot correctly when taking it. There is so much more to image quality than resolution. Pairing the A7s with a Zeiss Loxia 50mm f2 creates a small, lightwieght imaging powerhouse which renders my world beautifully

The full hd video Iin this camera still stand up as the best in 2023. At times it is hard to tell that it is hd and not 4k.

Hard to write this in 2020 when the 7SM3 has just been released, but the A7S is still a highly capable camera with some great features. Another update would be great, as it’s still a widely used camera.

To be honest I purchased this a second time ! It was one of those deals when you sell something and instantly regret it. The A7s is just one of those cameras that just clicks with me. I like the size and image quality. It has sort of a film look to it for me. I love the dynamic range. And don't believe the deal that you can't print big from a 12 mb senior. I have an 11x17 framed in my hallway that has inspired many a wow response. I only use it tor photo work inspire of it's video prowess. Overall a winer the I plan to keep the time !

After spending a fair bit of time (age related issue!) getting to understand the nuances of the camera I was really surprised just how good it is, rapid shooting was impressive, numerous features, great for night photography which was the main reason for buying it. A very neat size yet robust. Very very pleased indeed.

I was one of the first owners of the Sony A7s. I purchased it based on my years of experience with other Sony professional cameras and professional production gear. Sony has always been a leader in broadcast cameras, VTR's, switchers, wireless systems and countless other broadcast video gear. So it was no surprise that one of their first entrees into mirrorless cameras would be stellar, I was not wrong. I have used the Sony A7s in numerous situations requiring the most dynamic results and have never been disappointed. From the world's most demanding music videos to TV pilots it has never let me down. Do yourself a favor and consider the Sony A7s as an option for your next project. There is something magical about the full frame sensor and quality (Cooke) glass that will make your project find it's place in cinematography folklore,

Yes, the it is somewhat pricy, but the benefits that this camera has to offer cannot be matched by others. The options and performance for both video and stills is unbeatable.

I bought the Sony A7s to shoot film stills. it's one of the only full frame cameras that shoots silently and also has top of the range high ISO ability, as a stills photographer these are two absolute requirements. I also use it for shooting video too which is very good.. I like the files from this camera and do not need mega pixels. I use this camera professionally and find it reliable and does what it says.

The Sony A7s is the perfect companion for every situation. Not only does it have the most detailed Full HD sensor of all cameras in this price range, but also the endless possibilities this camera gives are amazing. It starts with mounting pretty much every lens that was ever designed apart from the m43 standard and ends with low noise performance even in high ISO range. It is small, lightweight and unreached in pretty much every aspect in it's price range and way beyond that. There are a few things which should be improved (hopefully in future models) such as: - 4:3 video mode for anamorphic filming (i put this on top together with 4k 60p because it is sooo important) - internal 4k 60p - internal nd filter - Full HD slowmotion up to 240 frames - keep the menu system it's great, just make it a few less options - shutter button record video, I love the side button, which is great but it should be able to record on the shutter too, don't you think. - 2 sd card slots (pretty much every wedding videographer who is serious about his business uses this camera) we trust you sony, but we need that 2nd slot for double recording in case of card failure! - better and more codecs (the images sooc are amazing already, imagine what a 10bit prores or whatever could achieve) - give us some a6500 AF performance, not for video but for stills, 20mpx would be awesome too. I think that's pretty much it. Add my features and we have the perfect camera.

This camera is as good as what many had review online. But if I have to point out the cons the thing is since most people actually got this camera for video shootings I expect more video features like the AF speed. Unlike a6000 which has 2 focusing speed, a7s only has one. And since this camera has so many features to control, a lot of time I find myself scrolling through the menu for too long looking for the item I need. It will really help if this camera has more customizable short-cut buttons.

Loving the A7S. With the 1.8 55 lens, I'm suddenly far more talented. The best thing is the iso. Why do they even make the other cameras? I had the A7r for a day and immediately went back and swapped for the 7S. Stunning shots. I can see in the dark with style!! My only complaint and it's a big one, is Playmemorieshome and software upgrades and use of online features does NOT play nice with Windows 10. Come on Sony, the whole creative world is NOT on Mac. Sort this out now please.

I purchased this photographic revelation a while ago and it has proven it's worth. Despite it's 12 megapixel sensor it takes excellent stills and in low light situations it execels capturing vibrant colours even in the dimmest of lighting conditions. This camera is best suited for videography. You really have to own one to experience what would have been considered almost impossible a view years ago. Sony products have always been my first choice and have never let me down.

Great low light, wonderful when well lit
By duotone
All the complaints about no 4k is crazy. Seriously, for those complaining about no 4k, go buy a different camera, like the GH4. Of course if you do, then you'll be complaining about the lack of low light abilities.... crazy.... I bought TWO a7s bodies strictly for the low light. Period. Done. There is NO match to the a7s. My commercial work for clients is 95% very low light, and very dusty conditions. The a7s is good. Crazy good! And not just for video, either. I shoot stills (landscape) an...

Great Camera
By Mkizilay
I had NEX-5N before. I wanted to have something better in terms of video capabilities this time. Through out many reviews I decided to get a7S. Very very light, mobile. Extremely good for low light, never seen something like this before. For certain people, 12MP for still photography is a downside, but it works perfectly for me. If you have good full frame lens, it will be super sharp and high quality. Focus Peaking is a great feature for manual focus. XAVC-S is a wonderful codec for Color Gr...

Sony a7S model puts extraordinary sensitivity, low noise and spectacular 4K video quality into the hands of professional photographers and videographers.
The innovative a7S camera features a newly developed, 12.2 effective megapixel 35mm Exmor CMOS sensor paired with a powerful BIONZ X image processor, allowing it to shoot at a sensitivity range of ISO 50 - 4096002 with unprecedented dynamic range and low noise.
The a7S is also the world's first camera to utilize the entire width of a full-frame image sensor in 4K video acquisition, and does this without cropping or line skipping as it can read and process data from every one of the sensor's pixels. This allows 4K video shooters to utilize all of the artistic and creative benefits provided by the unique sensor.
Wide ISO Sensitivity (ISO 50 - 409,600) and Impressive Dynamic Range
the Sone a7S features a unique 12.2 MP sensor with extraordinary sensitivity that allows the 7S camera to collect dramatically more light than traditional cameras and to produce beautifully detailed, low-noise images in even the darkest environments.
The camera also features a newly developed on-sensor technology that allows it to optimize the dynamic range throughout the entirety of the ISO50 - 409,600 sensitivity range. This on-sensor technology also broadens the range of tonal gradation in bright environments and minimizes noise in dark scenes, allowing the camera to deliver impressive results in these extreme conditions where other cameras (and image sensors) typically struggle.
World's First Full-Frame Camera with Full Pixel Read-out3 (without pixel binning) during Movie Shooting
With the a7S camera, the high-speed read out of the 35mm full-frame image sensor combined with the high-speed processing of the BIONZ X processor enables significant improvements in video quality.
These powerful components allow the camera to process data from all of the sensor's pixels and output stunning HD and 4K (QFHD 3840 x 2160 pixels) video3 while utilizing the full-width of the sensor. In addition to the benefits for low-light shooting, the read out of all pixels frees the video from aliasing, moire and false color artifacts (as opposed to pixel binning) to achieve the highest quality video.
Additional Pro-Quality Video Functions
In video mode, the a7S can output 4K video4 at QFHD (3840x2160)5 to an optional external 3rd party 4K recorder, and can record full HD (1920x1080) at frame rates of 60p, 60i, 30p and 24p directly to a compatible memory card. Video modes can be changed from full-frame to APS-C (super 35mm equivalent) if desired, and in this crop mode, the camera can support high frame rate 120fps shooting at standard HD resolution (1280 x 720p), creating a 5x slow-motion effect.
The a7S camera is also equipped with S-Log gamma. Common to Sony's range of professional video cameras, S-Log expands the dynamic range by up to 1300% to minimize clipped highlights and loss of detail in shadows. Additionally, for the first time ever in a Sony a camera, the a7S adopts the workflow-friendly XAVC S recording format in addition to AVCHD and MP4 codecs. XAVC S format allows for full HD recording at a data rate of 50 mbps with lower compression for improved video quality.
Other specialist video functions on the new camera include a picture profile that can adjust settings like gamma, black, level and color adjustment, and can be saved for use in a multi-camera shoot. It also has Full HD and 4K base band HDMI® output, time code/user bit for easier editing, synchronous recording feature with compatible devices, various marker and zebra displays on both the LCD screen and viewfinder and can dual record XAVC S as well as MP4 (1280x720 @30p).
The camera also has a Multi-terminal interface shoe that is compatible with Sony's XLR Adaptor Microphone Kits (XLR-K1M plus a new model under development), allowing the use of professional microphone systems>
Low-light Shooting Advantages
The high ISO sensitivity range of the a7S camera is extremely effective for still image shooting, especially in low-light conditions, where the camera can shoot at high shutter speeds while keeping noise as low as possible. This is particularly useful for shooting indoor, dimly lit sporting events or other situations where most cameras typically struggle.
The camera is also equipped with the same high-precision Fast Intelligent AF system as the a7R camera, with drastically improved low-light AF sensitivity that can go as low as -4EV.
Expanding a Mount System and New Power Zoom Lens for Movie Shooting
Directly compatible with the growing family of E-mount lenses, the a7S camera can also be used with A-mount and others lens systems with optional adapters. Sony's complete a lens system now includes 54 total lenses for both A and E mounts, including several premium offerings from Carl Zeiss and G Series Lenses.
As a whole, Sony's E-mount lens system is particularly well-suited for video shooting, with a variety of models containing "movie-friendly" features like smooth focusing, powered zoom control, and silent iris/aperture control. Building on this, Sony has announced development of a brand new, full-frame power zoom 28-135mm F4 lens E-mount lens that is an ideal match for the powerful movie capabilities of the a7S model.
