Best of the Lot

Somehow I've own nearly every pocket camera. The HX-99 is the best of the lot. Ease of use and low learning curve. Point and shoot that is all there is to it. If you are more of a camera person and want all the extras this is still the camera for you.

Great camera with good specs

Great camera offering one of the best zoom lenses for the price point. Specs of the camera offer photography at macro or zoom ranges. The menu is easy to follow. Hard to set up wifi syncing with my mobile phone or computer. Still haven't figured it out yet and the directions don't offer suggestions for the error that pops. up. Once I figure out the wifi feature the camera will be perfect for the photography hobbyist!

Great camera!

My camera was on back order so I didn't get it in time for vacation. Once everything arrived, it was all as described except the tripod is still on back order. The camera itself is very compact and easy to learn the menus. All except using wifi. I can't get the wifi feature to sync with my mobile phone, It would be great fo have a tutorial or have someone look at the error messages. Other than that--the camera works fine. Since I didn't get it in time for vacation I haven't been able to use it much around the house. I really wanted the camera for the zoom feature to photograph nature. It is a very powerful zoom lens and can't wait to capture nature photos with the zoom lens. I was looking for a compact camera that wasn't too cheap in specs such as the zoom or lens type. This camera offers a lot at a good price point.

A Great Small Camera with a lot to it

The camera is an excellent choice for anyone traveling and not wanting to take a big DSLR and a bunch of lens. The quality of the pictures is excellent but not professional. For vacation, travel, and use on a regular basis, it's a great choice. I recently purchased a Fuji X-T30- a great camera but more camera than I need. And using it for non-professional (everyday) purposes is ridiculous- wayyy to complicated. (Anyone interested in a real good deal on a pretty complete and hardly used X-T30 kit, give me a yell.) For now, and for my purposes, the HX-99 is just fine, and it's small and light enough that it is not a hassle to carry- or use for that matter. Good camera and a good choice for me.

Good zoom, good pictures on daylight, not good with low light

Bought this camera for concerts, but I didn't get even a one shot sharp with full zoom (30x) and low light, my previous camera canon Powershot SX230HS gave some sharp pics with full zoom (14x) and low light.

Great travel camera

I purchased this camera for a Seine River cruise. I did not want to carry my DSLR gear. This camera takes sharply focused images and has all the setting adjustments of the DSLR (M, P, Av, Tv). There is a pop up viewfinder with diopter adjustment and the LCD viewfinder swings out. I carried the camera on my belt in the little bag that came with the purchase and it was comfortable and convenient.

Camera seems easy but without a printed user manual it is a pain in the ### to have to print 500+ pages or go online to find out how to use the features

Nice upgrade for travel camera

Needed to replace a travel camera recently and was impressed by the new Sony on paper. I have used it now for a few weeks including a Florida trip. Great zoom produces very impressive shots using auto mode. Extremely small and light so easy to take along.

Nice Little Camera

nice little camera with some great range. I love that it has the ability to shoot landscape, or zoom in tight for a wildlife photo. With the high fps and the fact that you can shoot in raw, I think this is the perfect addition to my camera bag.

Perfect compact travel camer

This is a great travel camera. Although pocket-sized, it has enough creative-auto and traditional modes plus the huge zoom to make any prosumer happy. Image quality is not equal to a full frame rig and it's noisier in low light. OTOH, it's better than my Apple XS. I don't like the two-step process of raising the viewfinder and pulling out the diopter, (even if you don't need a diopter adjustment, and I don't like the fact that HDR bracketing is limited to ±0.3 EV. Other than that, very very cool.

Nice idea, but there are problems!!

It was smaller than I expected, and this became a problem because it was hard for me to hold steady (I'm used to a DSLR). Also it uses micro SD cards which means I would have to start collecting a new set of cards. The eyepiece worked OK but is a pop up which you then have to pull on to set focus, when you push it back down the camera shuts off, not sure I liked that idea and I think it will become a mechanical problem after continuous use. Decided it was nor for me and sent it back.

Workhorse

I purchased this three weeks ago for a trip to Peru, also carried my Sony A6000 along. The 4K videos were crisp and selfie mode is perfect if you're into that sorta thing. Viewfinder was fine once we figure it out but touchscreen was not great for shooting. (I may need to read up on the touch functions more) Zoom was nice but a small tripod is helpful to keep steady. Menu system is complicated so familiarize yourself with it before a big trip. WiFi worked fine for transferring photos. Shot in JPEG and Raw.

Overall a good choice

PRO: The default settings right out of the box produced good pictures. Properly exposed, good color balance. The attached photo was only cropped, no other corrections were applied. The lens is very good for such a wide telephoto range with acceptable sharpness and clarity at both extremes of the focal length range. CON: The configuration of this camera is somewhat challenging. The number of menus, the number of settings and some non-standard naming conventions make getting the settings I want an exercise in frustration. In addition some of the settings are not available depending upon the camera mode (focus area for instance). The camera also appears to re-focus between shots when shooting multiple single-shot exposures. This leads to out-of-focus images when shooting in rapid succession as the camera does not appear to re-focus quickly enough. Overall a good choice for a super-zoom pocket camera if you are willing to climb the learning curve to get it configured the way you like.

So small

I'm happy with the cam. The thing is extremely easy to take with you. The problem is that the stabilization is very lacking. You can get blurry photos even at half zoom. Let alone full 720mm. 3/4 times the photo won't be usable. They should try to fix this. The zoom is the main selling point and you can't use it that much. Also the touchscreen is almost useless. You can't even use it to input a password!

Surprising quality, clear images.

The telephoto is really good, quick, and the focus is great, too. Lightweight and handy. Using a tripod is important for the longest range. I have a small Gorilla unit and used it as a handle for steadier shooting. Like the viewfinder, and movable LCD screen. Right now I only have Pros and I would recommend this camera to anyone, professional or amateur. More time will tell. I've only had the camera for about two weeks. The Zeiss lens image clarity is great, as is bokeh capture.

If you have a pocket, this one’s for you

On days when I’m not carrying my Sony a7 III with EF 24-105, I’m happy to have handy my new Sony DSC-HX99. So far it’s as good as advertised.

Bang for the buck!

Just started playing around but my plans to shoot Rome and Venice without my FX DSLR and all my gear is getting easier to imagine. Still need to do some long exposure testing but I'm currently getting much more comfortable with the idea.

Great travel camera

By FRANCINE R.

Powerful zoom and serious performance
Despite its super-compact size, the HX99 delivers high-quality images and outstanding performance, incorporating high-level features like 24-720mm zoom, 4K video recording, fast and precise AF, plus a high-contrast OLED electronic viewfinder, handy control ring and tiltable LCD touch screen for easy operation.

All the essentials in the palm of your hand

With 24-720mm ZEISS zoom lens and 4K video recording
The world's smallest camera with 24-720mm zoom, the HX99 goes wherever the action is. With its ZEISS Vario-Sonar T 24-720mm lens and high-level features like Fast Intelligent AF and responsive Eye AF, it delivers remarkable performance in any setting.

The world's smallest camera with wide zoom range
Covering the range from wide-angle 24mm to telephoto 720mm, the HX99 is the perfect camera for everything from memorable travel photos to everyday snapshots. The ZEISS Vario-Sonnar T lens delivers superb image quality all across the zoom range and the Clear Image Zoom feature allows further magnification of the subject (up to 1440mm) while preserving high resolution.

Exmor R and BIONZ X deliver superb image quality
The HX99's image sensor - an 18.2 megapixel (effective) back-illuminated CMOS sensor - works with the advanced BIONZ X image-processing system to deliver superb image quality, even for fine textures and details. With a range of ISO80-6400 (expanded), even dimly lit scenes can be beautifully shot, while color-reproduction improvements produce natural-looking skin tones.

4K movies recorded with full pixel readout
The HX99 is the first in the HX-series to record 4K video (QFHD, 3840 x 2160 pixels). High-quality 4K video is achieved with a full sensor pixel readout and no pixel binning - collecting approximately 1.6x as much information as is required. This oversampling effect results in images of outstanding resolution with reduced moir and jaggies.

Continuous shooting at up to 10 frames per second
It's possible to perform high-speed continuous shooting at up to 10 frames per second for up to 155 shots. Even when image brightness changes during continuous shooting, the camera automatically adjusts to provide optimal exposure. Continuous-shot images can also be displayed, deleted and protected in groups.

Eye AF feature for perfect portrait shots
The camera's sophisticated Eye AF feature can be activated to automatically detect and focus on the eyes of the main subjects in your shots. It rapidly and accurately detects eyes even under difficult conditions, such as when the subject is looking downward or when faces are backlit or dimly lit.

Fast Intelligent AF to capture decisive moments
The camera adopts Fast Intelligent AF using highly accurate contrast-detection autofocus with 0.09-second response. It achieves focus by minimizing wasted lens motion, predicting AF range and accelerating the lens drive, improving response so you can capture even more fleeting moments.

Control ring for advanced photography
The convenient lens-mounted control ring allows you to operate pro-style manual controls such as selecting shutter speed, aperture and more for added creative control - so there's no need to compromise your vision because of the camera's compact size.

Clear, easy-to-operate OLED Tru-Finder
The high-contrast OLED Tru-Finder is far brighter than conventional electronic viewfinders. It displays real-time preview and shooting information, so what you see on-screen is exactly what you get in your shot. The viewfinder is easily retractable, for portability, safety and convenience.

Image stabilization with Optical SteadyShot
Designed for handheld shooting and when shooting at telephoto zoom settings, even with high magnification, the camera's Optical SteadyShot feature stabilizes the image and effectively reduces camera shake by relying on a high-performance gyro-sensor and a specialized algorithm. Because this is an optical function, image stabilization is performed without lowering resolution.

180 deg. tiltable LCD screen for flexible composition
The high-resolution 3.0" type screen with tilt capability is perfect for taking selfies and framing low-angle shots. You can use it in various shooting positions for greater flexibility in capturing creative compositions.

Touch Focus and Shutter
With Touch Focus you can simply touch the LCD at the point of the image you want to focus on, for both still and video capture, so you can intuitively focus on subjects even at the edge of the frame without reframing. The shutter can also be operated by touching the LCD screen.

Touch Pad AF
When using the viewfinder, use Touch Pad AF to shift focus smoothly and easily, simply by sliding your finger across the LCD screen.

High-frame rate HD video recording of fast-moving subjects
When you're shooting movies you can capture fast-moving subjects with high-frame rate HD recording at up to 120p (NTSC) or 100p (PAL). This allows you to produce impressive slow-motion sequences during editing. The high bitrate, up to 100Mbps, also ensures detailed images.

RAW format recording
In order to give users far greater control over the final appearance of their photos, the HX99 provides RAW-format image recording as an option. With this format all the data from the sensor is preserved, so exposure, brightness, white balance and other aspects of the image can be easily adjusted using image-editing software.

Zoom Assist
If you lose track of a moving subject while framing with zoom, the Zoom Assist function makes it easy to find it again. Program it to the C (custom) button, then simply push and hold it to automatically zoom out, find and frame your subject again, then release the button. The camera quickly zooms back to the original focal length, so you can resume shooting the subject.

Lock-on AF for enhanced photo opportunities
Lock-on AF captures and continues tracking moving subjects. It automatically adjusts the AF target frame size to match the subject size, improves tracking performance and helps you take full advantage of every photo opportunity.

Proxy data recording for easier, faster editing and sharing
While recording full-resolution 4K video, the camera can also capture a low-bitrate proxy file that's lighter and easier to handle. This makes it easy to upload and share the images soon after shooting them, enabling easier online collaboration.

A firmer grip for steadier shots
The camera's grip is designed to better fit your hand, making it easier to hold in order to provide stability, despite the camera's compact size. It provides more stable framing of handheld shots and reduced camera shake, for steady shots even when held in one hand.

My Menu your way
With My Menu, you can register menu items for instant recall and create custom menus. The menu screen has been redesigned and you can make function assignments for up to 30 items to retool the camera interface according to your shooting preferences.

Internal pop-up flash
The camera's built-in, manual pop-up flash feature enables various modes of flash photography. Slow Sync is useful for shooting atmospheric night portraits, Rear Sync lets you creatively express motion and the Autoflash setting automatically determines whether the flash is necessary.

New LCD power-saving mode
With the camera body power switched ON, the LCD screen can be automatically switched OFF (either 2, 5 or 10 seconds after its last operation) to save power.

Convenient on-location rating and sorting
Rate and protect your images in the field, with a convenient custom button assignment. Ratings, from 1 to 5 stars, can be reviewed when images are imported to your PC using PlayMemories Home or the new Sony Imaging Edge software, for fast sorting of even large image libraries.

Geo-tag your images via Bluetooth
With the Bluetooth Location Information Link you can easily geo-tag your images perfect when travelling. Simply pair your camera to a compatible smartphone with the PlayMemories Mobile app and your location data can be recorded together with each photo. The PlayMemories Home app can also be used on your PC to organize imported still images on a map.

Imaging Edge software suite from Sony
The Imaging Edge software suite can maximize image quality, improve production efficiency and help you finely adjust RAW-based images. Use its Remote to remotely control shooting while monitoring scenes via live-view PC screen; "Edit" to develop RAW data into high-quality photos; and "Viewer" to view, rate and select photos from a list of shots.

One-touch remote and sharing
With one-touch remote, a smartphone or tablet can function as a monitor and remote control. One-touch sharing allows easy transfers of photos or videos to an NFC-enabled Android device for easy uploading and sharing. Just install the PlayMemories Mobile app from your device's app store, then touch the device to the camera to connect them. QR code compatibility allows connection with non-NFC devices.
