My parents bought me this camera for my birthday. I asked for a NIkon but my parents had a budge cut and had to go lower so they got me this camera. So far is great . I love taking photographs and is great HD film makes it easier. I love that its easy to use and small. I read all the bad comments and one thing i disagree is blurry pictures. Of course your going to get blurry pictures if theirs movements . So far its working great i am protect it from dust because my last camera wasnt working. It was horrible camera no HD photos but with these one it works great . So far its been great and hope it stays like that .

I have used this camera on a few trips instead of taking the big slr and have been really happy with the pictures. It has good image quality and the image stabilization and autofocus are fast and good.

Love love love this camera. I bought a case immediately upon purchase and it still looks brand new. The pictures I have uploaded have not been edited whatsoever and are straight from the camera. See for yourself. I highly recommend!

It's a great camera! Excellent image quality, high resolution video, and a great value for the price.

I bought 2 of these cameras. One for myself and the other for my mother. My mother was so dissappointed and didn't want to tell me that every picture was blurry. I thought it was just my camera. It was both of our cameras and even a friend of mine had the same complaint. What good is a camera if all the pictures are blurry. She even took it to a few specialist and they said it was simply a bad camera produced by sony. Several places suggested Samsung and Kodak because sony was no longer producing quality products. I have to agree and I have always bought sony. I think this will most likely be my last sony purchase unless they fix this problem. Sorry Sony but it is what it is.

Bought camera to replace an aging cannon. Disappointed from day one. Have a 2 year old son. Any movement and the picture will turn out blurry. Have had the camera for a few months. Recently the lens started to go out. I have to turn the camera on and off 10 or 15 times before it will take a picture. Worst camera I have ever bought. My 2 MP camera on my phone can take better pictures.

One week after purchase, the lens cover that automatically opens when the lens is ejected (not sure of its technical name) stopped opening completely, this causes a problem as when the lens is fully ejected the coves blocks the lower right corner of the lens, thus causing this image to show in picture. Yes you can simply push it down with your finger and clear the view, but this should not be happing with such an expensive camera from Sony!!!! Not Happy!

I bought this camera based on my past experience with several Cybershot cameras. All of which performed great. This one on the other hand was a huge step down. I've owned it for 4 weeks now so I gave it a descent chance but I've come to the conclusion this new Cybershot SUCKS! It took several tries to get a descent picture even when my subjects were standing still. Forget about anything moving. Speaking of which, I found the video lacking in quality and sound. My old Cybershots blew this one away. Also when downloading ,the pictures and videos are in seperate folders. I had already deleted some videos before I found this out. The previous models all loaded the pics and videos in the same folders. Granted maybe this is a minor detail but it was important to me. I know some say what do you expect from a point and shoot. To them I say some qualiity and performance, especially from Sony. I would reccomded anybody to stay away from this or any Sony point and shoot.

This is the BIGGEST disappointment I've ever had. :( My first digital camera ever was a Sony, so when my latest Canon died, I decided to go back to Sony. What a huge mistake. I bought this in November, and have NO pictures from my holidays with family that are usable. Even though it is only two months old, I am throwing it IN THE GARBAGE and buying another Canon!! Shame on you, Sony!!!

I brought this camera in preparation for a trip and when I came back I had to delete about half of the pictures because they were extremely blurry. You can't move the camera at all if you want a flawless picture. You might as well bring a tripod with you. The blurriness is magnified at night. I'm really disappointed with this camera.

I'm thinking about getting this camera because of it's starburst mode. I'm getting married in July and I need something with quality and something that can take quick pictures without spending thousands of dollars on professional photography. (I've spent way too much as is in the wedding).... after reading all the reviews I've noticed one thing.... no one mentioned their memory card their using..... If you want quick pictures with less blur unfortunatley you're going to have to get a memory card capable of saving those images at those speeds in order for it to work correctly. With that being said, I think I'm going to still purchase this camera, if I do I will update you all with photo's from my wedding 7/10/10! ~ Jason

im sure the for 50 dollars more for the other one is alot better. battery life is very short. i recommend getting 2 battery's. i barely got thru a concert with one. i wish it zoomed more. also wish it had 1080p video and could zoom in and out while recording. the video and flash sucks the battery very quick. i dont have any problems with motion blur close, but from 5x zoom i do. i waved my hand as fast as i could and it came out perfect and pictures with flash in the dark are great 4 me.

Love it!!! This camera is great and the program runs great on my computer that has windows Vista. I have perchased Kodak cameras in the past and have had troubles with the program on my computer as well as the camera itself. The sony cybershot is great. I have three young children and it takes great pictures. I love the smile technology. The camera will actually wait until your subject is smiling before taking the picture. Works great with the kids!

We bought this camera to take pictures of our son in April. I saw the features that Sony has listed and bought. But the camera did not meet my expectations. The Camera is not good to shoot any moving objects or while you are in Motion. Even if the subject nods their head, the picture becomes blurred. Just imagine my frustration trying to take the pictures of my less than a year old son,

I was very happy when I first got this camera. However, the first time I sent my photos to be printed I found out the date shows up in the display when you take the pic, but the date DOES NOT print on your pics. I was then told I have to either plug the camera in to the printer or download the CD that comes with. WHAT?? Why can't I just print from my memory card and have the date like any other camera does? DUMB!! Not happy about this at all!

I have had my camera for about 7 mos now - I bought it to replace my dated Canon Elph, just in time for my 2nd baby. I wanted an small p&s, with video capability, to carry around in my purse & take picts of the kids. I did a lot of research and decided on the W290 b/c of it's good reviews, ease of use, & HD video capability. Upon opening the camera, I was impressed. However, it stopped there. The picture quality is awful. If there is any movement at all in the picture - which includes 90% of kid-photos - the picture is blurred. They are not sharp, & the color is oversaturated. They look cheap. I am frustrated, b/c I have basically had to go back to my DSLR for all of my picts. I have played around with the various settings on the camera, to no avail. The HD video is this camera's only redeeming quality - though it lacks zoom & does not perform well in low-light conditions. Since purchasing the W290, I have used friends' comparable Canon cameras, and I wish I had upgraded to one of those instead. I would not recc this camera to anyone planning to take pictures of kids, animals, etc.

I love this camera! Great design. Has a 28 millimeter wide angle lens that takes great pics. I live on maui and I took pics of eow valley which is very green and has sharp colors. The people that gave previous reviews had no idea what they are talking about saying that it has bad pic quality. If you want proof go to youtube and type in sony w290 picture quality or review and you will the fantastic pic quality of this camera.

For everyone saying this is a bad camera because it takes poor night shots or it only has a 5X Zoom, Buy a SLR with a big Flash!!!!! This is a Point & Shoot camera in a compact package. A camera this size normally has a 3X zoom, this one has a 5X... Bonus... It also has a small flash since it is a small camera..... So your not going to get good pictures at night at any distance.... Get over it. For a Point & Shoot camera, this is by far the best one I have owned. With the zoom and the amazing lense, this takes the sharpest pictures with the most amazing color of any camera I have had. Hat's off to Sony, they made a great camera. The simle feature is kind of nice if you have kids and your trying to get the flash of a smile they give you also. The only thing this camera is lacking is the capabiltiy of a remote control. My Olympus cameras had a remote and I LOVED them. Sony needs to get on that band wagon.

it takes good pictures for the most part, but the process of downloading and charging could be easier with a docking station, even if as an Accessory to purchase.

I've had this camera for several months now and am EXTREMELY disappointed. We'd had a compact Sony compact camera in the past and were always happy with the picture quality. So when that one was dropped and broken, we decided to stick with Sony. However, this camera's pictures are terrible. We've tried different setting, etc., but the colors, focus, sharpness and handling of light are all VERY poor. After dropping money on this one only a few months ago, we feel we need to get a new camera already so that we can have decent pictures. Extremely disappointing. If you are picky at all about picture quality I do not recommend this camera.

I'm sure, this will damage the reputation of sony name. Since many years I have the great Sony DSC P72- 3.2 megapixel 3x Optical Zoom, that I can't Compare it with DSC-W290 - 12.1 megapixel, 5x optical zoom that I bought it few months ago the DSC-W290 it is the worsest Digital Camera I ever seen, with very bad quality pic. and many more regarding the quality of the pic. I download the photos to the pc ...... oh my god what is that, I said because of the very bad quality of the photos, I decided to not buy sony products any more.

As an avid Sony fan owning 5 previous Sony cameras I was more than willing to spend a few dollars on an upgraded camera for an upcoming honeymoon holiday. The camera appeared to be working well based on the LCD screen on the camera but after a week of traveling and the photos being downloaded onto the pc I was shocked at the grainy quality of all the photos. First impresion is that the photos were taken in low light with excessive "noise" giving a blurred edge to every face. A cell phone camera gives a similar style photo. I hate to knock Sony but something went horribly wrong with this model, I have a camera I'll throw in the drawer when I get home. Buy a Sony product as they are normally very good but definately not this one. The attached photo is not zoomed in and had adequate light but the grainy effect is obvious.

I had this camera for 10 days and i tried many (if not all)of its features. The way sony corp. advertise about this camera, i expect this camera take better than average photos. I have a 4-5 years sony DSC-W1 (5 MP) and the pictures that this camera take are much better than DSC-W290. you see, i dont care about smile or face detector. What i really care is a camera that take an excellent picture then the gadgets comes in second. If you are looking for an average nice camera then buy this one. If you are thinking, you are getting the best compact camera in the world, then dont even bother. I am really disappointed that after 40 years of buying sony product in Middle East, Europe and America , Sony comes to this low level of making electronics. I remember people used to sware by sony products. that is a shame. I gave 1 star rating because the first job of any digital camera is to take a good picture which this one is NOT.

I've been in the market for a better pocket camera for some time for when I go to New York, summer 2010. I've read many reviews before deciding on this camera (looking to get the touch screen later). Weighing the positivies with the negatives. Good camera for the money. I likke the 3.0" LCD screen and the 12 mp and oxptical zoom are all fine features of the camera, The menu is easy to navigate, photos are clear and crisp, especially if you are familiar with f stops and ISO settings. The auto focus works nicely, I especially like the face detection and the smile features. The HD video quality is ok, but I don't anticpate I'll be shooting many videos with this camera. My concern was how it would hold up to nght shots, and I must say after playing around with it and taking some night photos, I was pleased with the quality. I can always get a card reader for less than $20 for the memory card to upload pictures to my computer so that's no big deal. I have to charge my Canon SLR battery separately from the camera, so having to do the same with the Sony is no different to me. I like the fact that it powers up and down quickly, and the duo memory card feature is a plus. I take a lot of pictures, too, so it really made a difference to me how this camera performed and is nice to addition to my current collection of cameras. In short, the negative reviews I read do not compare at all to all of the positive reviews I read. I knew what to expect when I got this camera and I would recommend this camera to others.

We were excited, we have an older cybershot and wanted to upgrade with better zoom ability. Only to find after we received that the video does not zoom while filming. We are unsure why this feature would be removed. My fault for not researching better before purchasing. The website should tell you this though. Overall we are greatly disappointed. and will have to stick with older camera for video of the kids.

Great point and shoot with a nicely over-sized viewer. The auto focus and stabilization features pretty much allow for goof proof shooting every time. I was pleasantly surprised with clarity and sharpness as well as the 5x zoom.

Excellent Camera
By ChristophM
This new addition to the "W" series is the best I've seen so far. It produces excellent image quality with very realistic colors. Sony has finally eliminated the "home" menu. The W290's menu system is very easy to navigate. The only thing I noticed as a con was the video quality. It is definitely HD quality, but some purple fringing and lens glare will appear in your videos. It isn't that big of a problem though, as the video quality is definitely better on this model than in most of the othe...

The Sony W290 is based around a 1/2.3" SuperHAD CCD image sensor with 12.1 megapixel resolution coupled to a Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar branded 5x optical zoom lens. The Sony W290 offers equivalent focal lengths that range from a useful 28mm wide angle to a 140mm telephoto, while the maximum aperture varies from f/3.3 to f/5.2 across the zoom range. Macro focusing will be possible down to a minimum of ten centimeters. The W290 will forgo any optical viewfinder in favor of a 3.0" LCD display with 230,000 dot resolution.
The Sony Cyber-Shot W290 will offer ISO sensitivity ranging from 80 to 3,200 equivalent and will include both true mechanical image stabilization, as well as Digital Image Stabilization which functions by raising the camera's sensitivity (and along with it, the noise levels) so as to achieve a higher shutter speed and reduce motion blurring. The Sony W290 will also include face detection capable of differentiating between children and adults, recognizing and prioritizing one specific individual's face whenever they're present in a scene and detecting when your subject blinks during an exposure. The W290 will also take into account the locations of detected faces when calculating autoexposure and autofocus variables.
The Sony Cyber-Shot W290 will feature in-camera retouching capabilities, with soft focus, fish eye effect, cross filter, partial color, retro, radiation, red-eye correction, trimming, unsharp masking and smile effects being on offer.
