Questions & Answers

ANDREW M : If using this with a Nikon D3100, what do you need to get to operate the kit? Does it hook directly up, or do you need some sort of wireless transmitter? Thank you.ELNAZ D : Hi Andrew, The JTL SL-160 is not compatible with Nikon's iTTL system. Meaning you would always have to adjust the power manually from behind the flash unit. For firing the the unit you have the option of using your on-camera flash as the trigger and the SL160 will fire along as a slave flash. If you don't want to use the on-camera flash, you would have to use a radio transmitter or a sync cord. Be advised that the SL160's sync cord input is a pc sync cable and on your camera end you need a cord that sits on your hotshoe. Hope this helps.MIGUEL T : HI, TODAY STARTED TO USE THE LAMPS, BUT ONE DOES NOT WORK, JUST DOES HALOGEN BULB. SOLUTION TO ME YOU OFFER?? THANKS FOR YOUR RESPONSE!AARON H : There are 2-3 options if you want to go with a straight cable which comes with the light is a hot shoe adapter Nikon as 15. cost about 15 dollars. second option you can buy a cheap radio remote adapter and receiver from eBay warning I bought one and it ruined the light I used it on and now it only functions as a slave. or you can by the electronic remote pocket wizard plus works fine. If you are using a 160 I am guessing you have a small studio. a forth option is to put a flash on your camera and bounce it off the wall behind you or side. lots of splash light that way though. I would recommend a radio remote for the camera less wires and more freedom just don't buy the low end stuff. Also you can start off with one light but you will eventually go to 3. The 160 is okay for starters but will eventually become your back light. Because it does not put out enough power. good luck hope this helped. Aaron HarropKIMBERLY E : The strobes have built in slaves, which will fire if using on-camera flash. I usually bounce my flash off the ceiling, which fires the strobes. Otherwise, you'll need a flashcord to hook to one of the lights directly.LYNN C : Yes, a wireless transmitter is the best way to get the job done.CLIFFORD R : The D3100 will work as the camera, the flash on the camera WILL fire these unitsDEAN L : You will need either a wired or wireless connection. The wired connection would be a hot shoe to PC connection. The wireless would be a Pocket Wizard or other type of wireless control.CHRISTOPHER D : The flash set I use can be triggered by the flash off my D80. The system allows you to use a wireless transmitter. I am not advanced enough yet to take advantage of the wireless capability. So far, I've had pretty good luck just using my flash to trigger. My camera seems to handle the metering pretty well. I have not had to make many adjustments to compensate for the strobes.BENNIE G : The JTL unit can be fired in two ways....one is as a slave to another flash....two is with a cable that comes with the flash....but for your camera you will need an adapter to connect to the hot shoe. Sync Terminal Adapter AS-15. RENFORD L. L : A wireless transmitter like the pockets wizard is need and saves time.JUDSON M : Hello, The easiest way to use this is with the Strobe setup in the optical slave mode, meaning it will fire when it see's a bright light, ie your on-board flash. However, you can use adapters to use a cable to connect the strobe to the camera so that the onboard flash will not fire. The typical setup would be a Synch cord, <a href="http://www.adorama.com/JTVJ110SC.html" target="_blank">http://www.adorama.com/JTVJ110SC.html</a> , and a hotshoe to PC adapter, <a href="http://www.adorama.com/NKAS15.html." target="_blank">http://www.adorama.com/NKAS15.html.</a> Radio frequency based wireless options would require the above mentioned hotshoe to PC adapter as well as a PC socket based transmitter and a mini-phone plug receiver.Jerry P : You'll need both a wireless trigger on your camera and a receiver on the light.

Simple & reliable.

Bought a pair of JTLs years ago as a backup to my Novatron kit. After my Novatron pack died, I decided to pick up another pair of JTLs. There are a few things about my old 160s that I like better, and vice versa. #1 thing though is that I'm not really impressed with the newer modeling lamp installation. It is not as robust as my older ones. I do like the switch to turn off the optical slave on the newer models.Overall, it's a nice kit for the price. Lightweight & reliable.

WARNING - These strobes electrocute!!!

I bought this strobe because the price was right for beginging photography. I used it a few times with the synch cord in my living room and it worked fine, but the moment I started using it in my garage (with concrete floors) where I had set up my studio, I would get electrocuted through my camera! I got a few pretty serious shocks. Assuming it was the synch cord that was bad, I purchased a set of wireless triggers. I tried wth the wireless trigger and receiver and had my husband hold the receiver since it was dangling in the opposite direction and ZAPP he got shocked as well. [...] These strobes do NOT have a ground wire - they only have two prongs! Not smart for such a high voltage piece of equipment!

Great Starter Light

I bought this to use along with my Canon 580 EX II speedlight flash for portraits. I have had good results so far and am very happy with it for the price.

An excellent value. If you question your camera's indoor abilities, try this kit. Opens tons of possibilities.

Light is OK but...

They send the kit with a bulb that is too long. I was told I had to contact JTL to get a new bulb. When I called JTL, I was told to contact [...]...run-around!FINALLY - after 2 months of phone calls to JTL they sent me a new bulb.I would buy another brand if you are considering this type of light set.

Nice, inexpensive studio lighting

I needed an inexpensive lighting system for indoor pet portraits. I HATE using artifical light, and had never used studio lighting before, but sometimes I need to shoot in less than ideal indoor lighting conditions, so I shopped around a bit to find something that I could use. I found this system [...] and decided to give it a try. Once I figured out how to set it up (the included instructions are VERY skimpy), and then figured out how to use it with the Nikon D200-- well, the results were really good. No "blue eye", good color rendition, fast recharge time. Overall, I'm really pleased with the unit, but it would be helpful if the included documentation was more complete.

Great value for money

Bought this strobe as a backlight for my table top product photograhy. I started off with the Cool Lights but ended spending way to much time correcting images. Since most of my clients want a white background for their websites I need a over exposed white background without any shadows. This strobe with softbox and a piece of Plexilite does the trick for me. The variable power is a must to keep things under controll...
