Boundary Microphones

A boundary microphone is a type of condenser microphone that comes mounted in a table top or floor-mounted housing. The housing’s design positions the diaphragm of the mic parallel to the mounting surface.

This design lets the mic pick up reflected sound from the mounting surface. The resulting recorded sound features less interference, so you can maintain a higher overall sound quality.

When to Use a Boundary Microphone

WIth so many different varieties of microphones available on the market, many casual consumers feel overwhelmed when deciding which variety is best for a given situation. Boundary microphones are most frequently used for recording full sound arrays in a room.

For example, boundary microphones are ideal for recording meetings held in conference rooms. They’re also perfect for recording small musical ensembles when you can’t individually mic each instrument.

Selecting a Polar Pattern

Boundary microphones come in a wide range of polar patterns. Cardioid unidirectional microphones are the most common variety, but omnidirectional, supercardioid, hypercardioid, and hemispherical polar patterns are also popular.

Omnidirectional microphones have the widest sound range, so they can pick up audio from multiple participants in a larger meeting. If you only have room in your budget for one or two microphones for a meeting with many participants, go with an omnidirectional microphone.

If each individual participant of a meeting or recording session will have their own mic, then cardioid or hypercardioid microphones are a better option. Those polar patterns are better at isolating sound from individual participants, giving you a cleaner mix.

Wireless and Wired Boundary Microphones

While the majority of boundary microphones are wired, you’ll also find a few wireless options on the market. For common recording scenarios, like in conference rooms or music halls, a wired microphone is a convenient option.

With the advent of improved wireless technology, wireless boundary mics are gaining popularity. When the situation demands a tidy recording area free from cords and wires, wireless boundary microphones are a great option, despite their higher price tag.
