Burris TMPR 5

I have wanted one of these for years and the planets aligned where I could finally get one. Unfortunately, Burris has discontinued this and repair/replacement may be an issue down the road. At the time of writing this, it seems Optics Planet has found a box of these in a backroom somewhere and are clearing them out. Burris, it seems develops very nice things for a very limited time, and moves on to something else hoping to sell more units which usually means Chinese made instead of Japanese or Philippines. That aside, here we go.

Pros:
-Built very nicely and appears to be very rugged. It has some heft, but so does all the Burris/Philippines optics I've used.
-Optic clarity is very nice. I have a Steiner T432(4x and it's comparable to that. This unit was produced before the merger I believe. Had this TMPR had the Steiner reticle, it would be pushing the boundaries of perfection.  
-Illumination is very nice. Comes with 3 color modes(Red/Green/Blue) with each having it's own adjustment levels. I maxed out the brightness and did NOT have any halo effect or bleeding.
-Controls are easy to access and manipulate. I cannot say the same for my Steiner. The illumination dial is positioned in a way that my fingers catch either the lugs on its base or the charging handle(depending on the day).
-Has mounting options for other burris accessories. There are plates for Fastfire RDS, a laser and something else. I MIGHT get the laser, but may leave it naked. 
-Adjustable eye focus. I don't need to explain how nice that is to have on an optic.
-Interesting QD mount. It's easy to manipulate, which makes me think of unintentional release but the levers are designed in a way where there shouldn't be an issue(borderline Pro/Con).

Cons:
-The illumination. While having an array of different colors and brightness settings is nice, the TMPR DOES NOT save your last setting when you turn it off. It defaults to the mid level brightness in RED when you turn it on.
-No 'Shake-Awake' feature, but this may have been manufactured before that was a thing.
-Turrets. This makes my 4th Burris optic(3 XTR2's, one made in JAPAN), and ALL have soft adjustment turrest EXCEPT my 2-10 XTRII. This leads me to believe this a common trait among Burris and it sucks. It is VERY difficult to tell if you've made the adjustment or not.
-Reticle is OK, but not very intuitive. Also, it's pretty small, but it's easier to see than my Steiner's.
-Adjustment. This one REALLY confuses me. I went with the 3x instead of the 5x for better eye relief and FOV@100yds. I did not know, that the 3x has 1/2 MOA adjustments and the 5x has 1/4 MOA adjustment. I simply cannot understand why the 3x was made without 1/4 adjustment like the 5x. The argument could made that 3x should be more CQB related vs a 5X optic, but shooting is about getting rounds ON TARGET and having the utmost confidence that you will not miss and hit something unintentionally. I simply like to have a VERY good idea of where my round is going; Call me a stickler if you like. This is my biggest gripe about this optic.

I spoke with a Burris rep to clear up the whole 'illumination memory' thing(thinking it was a faulty unit), and of course I went of on tangents and we went into further details of this optic. He brought up an interesting point that the TMPR was ahead and behind its time, at the same time. When it was released, it had a $1000(ish) MSRP without the attachments(~$1300 with) and it basically priced itself out of the market of the time. The features I listed in the Cons that it is lacking were starting to come out on other brands, which shows how fast the market moves and the fact it only accepted Burris attachments probably didn't help. I'm a firm believer that if Burris re-released this to accept RMR's, Aimpoints, etc., and added 'illumination memory', it would sell. As previously stated Burris does not make nice things long and prefers to stay somewhat in the middle of the road in quality and unfortunately this decision prevents them from being great. If this had the 1/4 adjustment, it would've been a 5 star for me. I did buy a 2nd though.....

Good, but needs refinemnt

I've had my TMPR since last fall, and I've been really impressed with it. I've had three range trips with it so far. The glass is really clear, and with my eyes getting older, being able to manually focus things as needed is great.  The ability to illuminate the reticle in green, blue or red is nice too.  I can pick a color that shows up best for me.  Plus, with the etched reticle, if the battery goes out it's still usable.
Eye relief is amazingly good.  It allows for some wiggle room, so you don't have to have it in the 'perfect' spot.  I like the reticle a lot.  My eye naturally goes to the dot in the middle of the horseshoe.  It's easy to line up and get a shot off quickly.
I mounted a FastFire3 to the left side slot, and it works even better than I thought it would.  My left eye is better than my right, so all I have to do for closeup work is tilt the rifle and the red dot aligns with my left eye.  I was able to zero the FF3 at 25 yards really easily. 
Overall, it seems solidly built and mounts easily on a rifle.  If you want or need a good prism optic that you can focus as needed, I don't think you can go wrong with this.

This thing is a hidden gem!

Great product a little heavy but worth it   The led lights are really nice

2 index marks and can be used right or left handed

3 colors x 7 independent illumination settings with the last two of each being night vision compatible...  was immediately in love before I even used it.  But after getting it in to the field for a hog hunt, WOW!  I fight eye issues and typically have challenges with clarity of reticle in addition to oversensitivity to bloom.  With the multiple combination of settings available, I found something that worked perfect, with and without my PVS-14.  Made braining this big guy at 75yds in the dark easy.  Simple to use, not too heavy.  Can't say enough good things about this optic.  My only wish is for IR accessories, in particular, an illuminator.
