Shotgun mics or boom mics are often used in video productions to capture sound in a variety of situations on set. These microphones come in multiple types such as long shotgun, condenser, and video mics.

If you want to capture exterior shots for your video or film, using a long boom mic is your best bet. This type of shotgun mic uses a tight pattern in capturing sound and gives you the longest reach for exterior shots. Long boom mics feature the highest side rejection possible as well for combating outdoor or background noise.

Lavalier mics are currently available in proximity and transparent types. Proximity lav mics make dialogues sound warmer, highlighting the voice of subjects similar to announcers and commentators. Meanwhile, transparent lav mics give you more natural-sounding recordings. They provide clean audio capture from several feet away, making them ideal for being planted as hidden mics on set.

Lavalier microphones also have a variety of pick-up patterns. Some lav mics have cardioid patterns that help these devices produce less audience noise and provide feedback control.
