I studied several gimbal heads before selecting the Induro. The control layout (both knobs on the same side) and quality of the knobs (all metal) are excellent. This is one of those products that is a pleasure to use. It is smaller than I was expecting but it is extremely strong and I view the compact size and light weight as a BIG plus (my glass is heavy enough). I will be using regularly with a Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 lens for which it is a perfect match. I have also tested it with and plan to use with my Sigma 300-800mm f/5.6 lens (13 pounds). While it is undersized for this application the solid construction leaves me confident it can handle the load. The controls engage over a 1/4 to 1/2 turn which makes them very fast to operate but you should not assume they provide any measure of controlled tension (like a fluid head does). Fit and finish are extremely good as is the general design aesthetic. The clamp is minimalist but inspires confidence. The clamp plate is well designed with several rubber grips to ensure secure attachment to the lens without damage to the foot. I plan to add a bubble level to the base and feel this would have been a very useful feature to have included in the design. Induro would do well to redesign the shipping package. The flimsy plastic tray had collapsed during transit allowing the lens plate to bang around in the box, slightly marring the gimbal finish before it arrived. I debated with myself about getting a side mount gimbal. Having now used it I am confident I made the right choice. My concerns about mounting a heavy lens were unfounded. You certainly do not want to do this carelessly but it is not at all difficult. Simply engage the lower dovetail (which now carries all the weight) and tilt the plate into the clamp while securing with the knob. Sliding the plate within the clamp to find the balance point requires a bit of finesse but is not at all difficult. The side mount design provides automatic alignment with the lens center line and does not need to be changed from lens to lens. With less joints and arms it is clearly going to be more stable when locked up than a horizontal style gimbal of equal size.
