Matte Boxes and Camera Matte Boxes

Camera matte boxes are an important filmmaking tool. They act as an adjustable lens hood, allowing you to keep unwanted light from entering the lens. Physically they look similar to barn doors on a light fixture, but they’re a bit more complex than just a set of flaps on hinges.

The beauty of using matte boxes rather than lens hoods is that they are relatively universal. A single matte box can work effectively across multiple lenses of varying sizes. Some camera matte boxes make it easier to mount filters and other accessories as well.

Selecting the right filter stage count

If you want to use filters with your matte box, it’s smart to buy a box that makes the use of filters quick and easy. Matte boxes are available for use with one to four filters. If you aren’t sure how many filter spots you’ll need, consider choosing a matte box with extra spots just in case. You can also select a box that will let you reduce or expand the number of filters as you go. Some camera matte boxes even have geared filter stages for precise filter rotation and adjustment.

Choosing by filter size

One important measurement when picking a matte box is the filter size. Filters range from 3x3 all the way up to 6.6x6.6. If you already have some filters, buy a matte box that will work with your existing gear. If you’re starting from scratch, consider choosing a larger filter size for more flexibility in lens choice and in positioning the filters in front of the lens. The larger the filter, the more control you’ll have creatively.

Mounting and swing-away for more flexibility

Some matte boxes mount to the lens, while others mount to the camera using external rods. Rod-mounted camera matte boxes are more flexible because you can change lenses without removing the matte box assembly.

Swing-away matte boxes are hinged, so you can easily fold them back from the front of the lens. This lets you shoot without the matte box, without taking it off the camera entirely.
