Matte Boxes and Accessories
In the filmmaking industry, matte boxes are among the most useful pieces of equipment on the market. Not only do they function as adjustable lens hoods for minimizing light leaks and flare, but they provide protection for your expensive lenses while in use.
What are matte boxes?
A matte box is composed of a rigid square or rectangular base plate that attaches to the front of your camera lens. Matte boxes often feature filter slots to accommodate glass or acrylic filters, as well as moveable barn doors for blocking stray light.
Videographers love matte boxes for their flexibility across many lighting and environmental conditions. Because filter slots are integrated into the shape of the matte box, the use of filters is simple, and they attach securely.
Next time you’re tempted to try using the lens hood that came with your lens, consider upgrading your video capabilities with a matte box.
Selecting a matte box
When choosing a matte box, your primary considerations are the filter stage count (or number of filters your matte box can hold) and the filter size.
If you own a filter system, look for a matte box that will fit your current filter collection. 6.6x6.6”, 5x5”, and 4x5.65” are among the most common filter sizes, but there are other sizes to choose from as well.
Matte box adapters
Matte box adapters connect the matte box to the front of your lens with a threaded ring. Purchasing a matte box ring adapter kit is a great way to ensure that your matte box will continue to work with any lenses you may purchase in the future, regardless of their diameter.
Supports and other matte box accessories
