Shopper : Is there really a big difference in quality between the resin and glass in the LEE .6 4X4 ND filter? I will mostly use it to control depth of field with off camera flash outside for portraiture. Polyester ND?DARREN S : There are a few differences, but these are trade offs. Resin filters are cheaper and fulfill the same basic photographic need. However, they're more prone to scratches (softer material), give a slightly softer image (less sharp), and could show larger color shifts. I own both glass and resin filters and, for the most part, see little difference in most situations. If you shoot subjects were color and sharpness are absolutely critical, get the glass. Otherwise, resin should be just fine.PON A : I have not noticed a color shift difference between the resin (plastic) and glass lee filters. They are both neutral unlike cokin which has a nasty discoloration on long exposures. The main difference I see is in durability. Since I carry my filters everywhere I go, I tend to drop them. The glass filter broke, the resin filter got a little scratched but is still useable 3 years later (and a few more drops).JOSELYNN F : I bought the filter that you are asking about. I can't say that I have a ton of experience with using filters, I bought the resin because I knew it would put up with a bit more abuse! I am on the move quite a bit when shooting and wanted something large enough to hand hold in front of any lense. I bought it after I saw a pro wedding photographer using one, he drilled a small hole at the top corner with tied through so it would not drop and he was able to quickly use it as needed with quickly changing lighting conditions. The only problem I have is that I do not use a tripod and it is tough to hold the camera body steady with shooting with my favorite 70 - 200 canon lens! I am happy with the post process results after processing RAW files with LR and Photoshop and my clients appear happy with the results also!CHARLES J : I have appreciated the quality in mine and felt it was superior to the conklin I had previously.Kenneth J : It is my understanding that glass ND filters have plastic sandwiched between the glass. You can stain the plastic to whatever ND level you wnat. You can't do the same for glass. The plastic is optical grade used in eye glasses. I suspect that plastic ND's and sandwiched ND's are comparable in IQ. I do tend to shy away from glass. 2 layers of glass, 2 layers of glue and 1 layer of plastic. The glass won't scratch as easily. I use plastic and handle it carefully.
