Shopper : Can the Brolly Grip be mounted to a stand? fit over a 5/8 stud and tightened down? Thanks.MARK C : Yes, I do it frequently and it works great as a mini-umbrella. This is one of my favorite accessories in the field.JAMES A : Do not buy this umbrella. Flimsy and it would not stay open. Piece of junk. Do not buy it it was poorly designed... Shopper : How does it compare with the lightsphere?JOSE R : Never used Lightshere but I really do like this for getting the flash off camera and being much more mobile than a lightstandMARK C : Hi, by lightsphere I assume you mean the Gary Fong lightsphere product or something similar. The lightsphere is basically a larger round version of the diffusion dome that normally comes with your flash unit. Light from the flash goes up into the sphere and then is spread everywhere. With the Lastolite brolly grip umbrella kit, you basically have a shoot-through umbrella in your hand. You can direct the light in a more specific direction. Being an umbrella, there will be a lot of spill but the bulk of the light will go forward through the umbrella creating nice, soft even light on your subject if you get it in close. I recently used my brolly kit to photograph a couple of small dogs modeling fleece jackets in a pet store. It was the perfect tool. Hope this helps.JAMES A : the umbrella is a piece of crap. The one I was sent does not stay open because the slot is lined up incorrectly. Very poor workmanship and I would not recommend getting the umbrella that can be purchased with the kit. The umbrella attachment is OK but if you get it don.t get the umbrella that comes with the kit. JKAGREG H : Lastolite Brolly grip is a better solution to lighting a subject. Considering that the light can be placed off camera with your (primarily) wireless strobe you can get diffused light for portraits etc. It can be mounted on a light stand or hand held provided you have your camera mounted on a tripod (or strong arms). Lastolite is very lightweight though. I personally find the lightsphere or products of that nature to NOT solve lighting as the light goes thru all angles of the sphere (back etc) losing alot of light /power to your strobe. Both are personal taste-but the Lightsphere attaches directly to the head of the strobe and I find it bulky and not nearly as functional.
