Jerry J : Are these the same as VHF?W.KURT W : No. These operate on the GMRS/FRS (Control Tone Coded Squelch)band (versus the VHF band), which frequencies range between 426.5625 MHz to 462.7250 MHz. THey also tap into the mulitple National Weather Channnel frequencies rangin from 162.550 MHz to 162.000 MHz. Hope this helps
Shopper : must it be direct line of sight to communicate? use hunting on hhilly woodsW.KURT W : Direct line of sight offers the maximimum range of up to 30 + mile, but any obstructions can dimish it to half or even less. Deep gullies and the like can be a problem sometimes.
Shopper : how do i program the range?PHILIP W : I don't think you can program the range. It is what it is. Varies on what obstacles are in the way - buildings, walls, hills, trees etc. Says that the range is 35 miles but it is a far cry from that.ANDREW R : From the instruction manual: "Selecting the Channel Your radio has 22 channels. The channel is the frequency the radio uses to transmit. Channels 8-14 are FRS 0.5 watt only and all other channels are GMRS. (See the "Channels and Frequencies" table on overleaf for details.) 1. With the radio on, press [MENU] . 2. Press + or - and select an unused or quiet channel. 3. Press [PTT] to save the channel setting or [MENU] to continue set up." Full instructions for changing the frequencies on these unit should be included in the instruction manual that came with the unit. Please bear in mind, the FCC requires that all operators using GMRS frequencies obtain a radio license before operating their equipment. It is the responsibility of the radio user to read and understand all applicable rules and regulations regarding GMRS.
