Sandbags are used whenever you need extra weight to prevent tipping. You usually "bag" stands, especially when the weight is off center, such as with a heavy Scrim. They help stabilize equipment in windy situations and can counter balance Boom Arm applications.Matthews employs an additional inner liner of waterproof material in each sandbag to add a heightened degree of durability and safety. This is especially important in conditions of extreme cold as the inner liner helps to prevent the sand from getting wet, thus preventing the sandbag from freezing and losing its malleability. Matthews sandbags preserve their ability to mold themselves around any object, thus extending the life of the sandbag.The outer shell of the Matthews sandbag comes in two different types of material: a heavy-duty cordura or vinyl fabric. The cordura is made out of flame resistant and stain resistant nylon. Essentially, you are getting the most quality product manufactured anywhere at an affordable price. The vinyl Matthews uses is a polyester woven fabric that is mildew and ultra violet resistant, meaning the fabric will resist mildew build-up and fading color in the sun. This material is also manufacturer guaranteed against rips and tears.The linear/butterfly handle spans the width of the sandbag. When you pick up the sandbag, the handle will pick it up via the outer edges of the width of the bag. This is useful in situations where the bag must be molded around some type of stand or other edged object because you can pick up the bag from the sides without having to disturb said object. This is invaluable in situations where you need to move quickly - the less time it takes to move the sandbag the more time you have for the important things like coffee breaks! Matthews puts the handle dead center of the left and right edges of the sandbag, but it can be made in any position on the bag that you desire. The empty bag is completely sewn except for a 1" seam, left open for the user to fill and then sew closed.

Filled it with pennies and it works GREAT!

Safety First

Bag seems to be sturdy but unless you have access to a heavy duty sewing machine, there is no way of securing the ends once filled.

Although this is a nice sturdy bag for its purpose I was a little disappointed once it arrived. This is a one-time fill bag unless you are handy with a sewing machine and can add a zipper to close it or open it. It would work well for sand or rocks to add weight for keeping a C-stand sturdy. You may even be able to use small binder clips to close the flap. This is ideal for bringing to a location and gathering weighting materials for the shoot and leaving the material behind once you are done.

Was expecting a zipper closure on this bag.

I'm always satisfied with the products I get from Adorama. The sand bag was delivered on time and though it's a sand bag, I put small pebbles in the bag instead because sand...just gets everywhere. The bag feels very durable and it does its job well and every time I use it, I don't have to worry about anything tipping over. Having one less thing to worry about while shooting (especially tipping lights/stands) is great. Overall, very satisfied with this product!

Great Purchase

There's no easy way to close these up once you fill them with sand.  You're expected to sew them on your own which isn't easy from a photo studio stand point

More trouble then they're worth

Great but filling them yourself is not that easy. Better to get the ones with zippers. For these you have to get someone to sew that can sew heavy canvas.

Looks Awesome—can't use it yet

Good, but

These are excellent sandbags for small lights used indoors. They are heavy enough to keep lights from tipping over but not so heavy as to make them difficult to move around. They are very well made with excellent stitching and don't leak sand when you put them down like so many sandbags you fill yourself. Highly recommended.

Excellent Small Sandbags

The fact that you need a heavy duty sewing machine to complete the manufacture of this product at home should be in big, bold letters at the top odf the description. I would not have bought it if I knew I was going to have to finish making it. I hate to rate the product poorly over the fact that it was poorly described. But that's what I'm going to do.

MUST FINISH SEWING YOURSELF

There's a lot of sandbags out there, a lot of bad sandbags. I wanted a pro level bag that didn't cost an arm and a leg. To be clear, a pro level bag means you have to finish stitching the bag up after you've filled it with sand which is exactly what this is. There's no zippers to fail and spill sand everywhere. You can either keep buying sandbags or you can buy this one once.

Please understand that these are DIY, and a very heavy duty sewing machine is needed to close them. It should be in the title, but it isn't.

Before you buy!!!

Just lay the filled sandbags across your tripod, umbrella, or light stand and it gives it stability.

These came prefilled with sand!

Nice product, but I bought the wrong one, as I wanted the zipper one instead of the unsewn one. My mistake.
