Review Summary

Being a bit of a retro-grouch at times, I didn't expect I'd like this camera as much as I would??.but I realllllllly like this camera. In the past, for Nikon I've owned an N8008s, D40, D80, D3, D3s, D800E, and D810 (still currently own the D810)?.overall my favorite was the D3s, but I think the Z8 may have dethroned it. I like the rear button layout and being able to access the menu, zoom in/out and "ok" buttons with my right thumb. It's the little things like that which makes shooting faster and easier. I do miss the larger, green backlit LCD on top of the DSLR's though. The amount of technology they've packed into the Z8 is quite impressive. Ergonomically, comparing my D810 to the Z8 (comparing to a full-size body like the D3s wouldn't be fair), I like the feel of the D810 in hand better, the Z8 feels a bit blocky?..but I added a SmallRig L-Bracket to the Z8 and it's improved the feel. Not sure why SmallRig discontinued that. I like having an electronic shutter vs. a mechanical shutter (less to wear out), as well as having the sensor shield down when the camera is off/changing lenses. The Z8 renders noise quite well at higher ISO's with black and white conversions?..almost reminds me of shooting Tri-X (grainier) and T-Max (less grainier) from way back. The EVF on the Z8 is quite good, and having the ability to zoom in while using the EVF to manually focus (think macro or anything that requires critical focus) is awesome. I also love finally having a camera with IBIS. Image quality is good but doesn't really look any different than my D810. I'm not sure why Nikon took a step backward with the flash sync speed only being 1/200th now on the Z8 - wasn't impressed with that. I did have a bit of a weird issue with flash triggering during a family portrait shoot yesterday - for some reason, my studio strobe wouldn't fire when set to 1/200th in the flash menu, but when I switched it to 1/200th in high speed sync (this isn't a HSS flash unit), then it triggered normally. Could've been a glitch with either the flash trigger in the hotshoe or the camera, not sure which. I'll have to test to see if I can re-create the problem, but didn't run into that before. Bottom line, if you want a new camera with all the bells and whistles and Z-series glass, the Z8 is great. If you don't need or want all the bells and whistles and are happy with the performance and quality of your D810, D6 or D850 and your G series lenses, then stick with what you have

I really like the speed of the auto focus for my bird photography and facial recognition on people even a long distance away! I like the higher megapixels so that I can crop or pixel peak even up to 400%! Feels great in the hand, even tho a little heavier than my z6's. I should've just bought the Z8 instead of the Z6's esp. since I do a lot of bird photography.

Love my new Z8. Same great sensor as the Z9 but lighter and able to use the batteries from my D series cameras?as well as the pile of SD cards that I have.

After market Battery works find. 5 charges so far. So I save my Nikon ones at 80%. I have some little used 20 year old Nikon batteries which I keep in the cameras still rated as new. Using the flash as a slave with my 40 year old sensors although there is no swivel . Better idea is it lets the model know I am shooting with out effecting the photo due to the long distance. A pre flash is get ready with out any waving to bother others.

Love this camera. I went from a D500 to the Z8. The difference in quality and range is amazing, night and day. Not heavy, smooth transition if you are coming from another Nikon camera. Great in low light and excellent if you're using it for wildlife and night photography. I highly recommend this camera.

My favorite Nikon yet! What a machine, it offers great flexibility at a great price for what it can do. This is the camera that got me excited about Nikon again and I bought it as soon as it came out. As a hybrid shooter this has opened new possibilities to my work, from shooting 8k to advanced zoom and internal recording at various formats this is the camera that will take you to the next place. Big enough to feel great in your hands while also having controls and the ability to customize them at your liking. I now made this into my A cam and my z6iii into my B cam. I also love the fact that it has a sensor curtain, when going to remote locations where the elements can get into you sensor this is crucial! I got a chance to travel to Antartica in 2021 with my z7 and z6 and got my sensors dirty... huge bummer to see so many great pictures ruined because of debris and no good way to do a proper cleaning. Lesson learned and I feature alone would have prevented that problem.

Best camera yet for my Bird Photography due to the auto focus system. Many more keepers over my Nikon D850 and D500. Tracking technology is magic. Battery has a shorter life however I just carry an extra battery...no problem.

I loved the first Z8 that I bought a 2nd one for my business. The quality of pictures and videos from this are amazing. Came from Z6 and Z6ii, which were good, but wow the Z8 is phenomenal!

I really like this camera and would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a professional level camera. Good weight and good ergonomics. It is a little bit bigger than my Z7ii, but that is not an issue at all.

Magnificent, wonderful and well-equipped is just a few of the things I can say about this camera. Since moving over to the Z-system from Sony I have found that the autofocus and ISO have been years beyond Sony. This camera does not disappoint, and the FPS (frames per second) is a definite upgrade from Sony.

Coming from a z7ii the z8 is phenomenal. While the z7 ii is no slouch the Z8 is faster to autofocus and can af in lower light which is amazing as the z7ii did a fantastic job. The image quality is virtually the same. For static images the z7ii and z8 are neck and neck. Add pixel shift shooting and all I can say is Wow!! For fast moving action and for when you must get that shot then the z8 is great. Still learning its features. For those concerned I'm keeping the Z7ii, not as backup but to supplement the z8

The Gear Evolves and the Learning Never Stops

Transitioned from the D850 to Z8, thought I would keep the 850 for a backup but after two weeks with the Z8 the 850 was not an option...it's like getting a new guitar that is amazing to play and all the other guitars are now just taking up space...the hardest adjustment to a mirrorless camera for me was not being able to compose a shot without turning on the camera...the battery life was a concern until talking to another pro who said he just turns off the camera between setups or as he cha...

Wide-area AF offers 20 custom options for defining your focus area. Ensure the bride and groom are in sharp focus, even when wedding guests are in the foreground.
Enhanced Low-light Focusing
Subject detection and AF work all the way down to -6.5 EV. Activate Starlight Mode, and focus all the way down to -9 EV.
Z mount: Bigger. Better.
Edge-to-Edge Sharpness
With more light reaching the sensor, fine details and textures are captured faithfully across the entire frame, from corner to corner.
Dreamy Bokeh
NIKKOR Z lenses transform out-of-focus areas into a smooth, beautiful blur that makes subjects stand out.
More Light Gathering
With the largest full-frame mount of any mirrorless system, Z series lenses have larger rear elements that deliver more light to the sensor.
Reduced Focus Breathing
Many NIKKOR Z lenses all but eliminate focus breathing, maintaining a consistent viewing angle while pulling focus in videos.
Faster Lens-to-Camera Communication
The wide diameter of the Z mount accommodates more communication points, enabling larger amounts of metering and autofocus data to be shared between the lens and camera.
Use DSLR lenses with no loss of image quality.
Attach the FTZ II Mount Adapter (sold separately) and use over approximately 360 Nikon F-Mount lenses with no loss of image quality and all the benefits of the Z 8's extraordinary sensor, image processing and in-body image stabilization.
In-body stabilization means every lens has VR.
The Z 8 has 5.5 stops of 5-axis image stabilization built right into its body (6.0 stops when using a Nikkor Z lens that supports Synchro VR). That means even prime lenses get the benefits of VR for steadier video footage, more low-light capabilities and sharper results overall.
Fast, convenient connectivity.

Wirelessly transfer images to your smartphone, computer or even an FTP server.
Bluetooth
Remotely control the Z 8 from a smartphone, sync timecodes among compatible devices and more.
