Questions & Answers

Shopper : Is this compatible with the nikon d7000 & the D3100 cameras or should I use the straight through model.I like the angled model better if there is no problem?DAVID R : According to Nikon it is. You will need this adapter however. http://www.adorama.com/NKFSDA.htmlKAREN W : Short answer is Yes, certainly for the D7000. You can use it with the angled body model ED82A. Go to the Nikon web site & look up digiscoping diagram. It will be something like: products/sportoptics/lineup/dsystem/diagram/index : The diagram shows what scopes go with what attachments that go with what cameras. I recall the D7000 is listed, don't recall if D3100 is listed. You'll need the SLR camera attachment FSA-L1. If I recall correctly, you can only focus using the scope, the camera auto focus doesn't work with this setup. Also, the zoom on the camera doesn't work. You only get the enlargement provided by the scope & FSA-L1, no adjustments. I have the angled body model but use a Coolpix P310 w/ a wide angled eyepiece & connector bracket. You still have to focus with the scope but you can use the camera zoom that makes the subjects larger than just the scope & FSA-L1 when using SLR cameras. Hope this helped.MARK H : According to Nikon's website the FSA-L1 adapter fits both style of scope. It also does list compatability with the D7000 and all F-Mount SLRs plus many other F series Nikons. I have the angled with the D7000 and plan to buy the adapter. A quick search for FSA-L1 on Google/Imgages shows the adapter on the both the angled and straight versions. MarkDAVE W : I use mine with a D7000. Fits fine. I too prefer the angled model over the straight through.BRIAN R : The FSA-L1 adapter will fit the angled body Fieldscope III and allow it to attach to both the mentioned cameras.MATT K : It depends, your going to want to check to see if there is an adapter that will fit the cameras in question.so it really doesn't matter whether the scope is angled or straight.you can check the specs on nikons website to see what cameras fit what adapters for digiscoping.JOE R : My apologies, but I am unable to provide an answer to the other customer's question. I don't use Nikon cameras and therefore don't have the expertise to answser him.JACQUES G : I do not know.PETER C : It works perfectly with the D7000.DEAN D : Yes it is compatible. I'm using it now with the D3100.
Lorraine H : Hello. I just purchased the spotting scope and need to buy a tripod. Any suggestions? Also do you know what I need to attach a point and shoot camera and a Canon 50D EOS? Thank you for any help you can offer. LorraineVLADIMIR G : I am using a Nikon D5100 with the scope, so I can't answer about Canon. I uuse two tripods. The heavier one is a Vanguard Tracker LT-28 . This is steady and with good adjustments, lots of reviews also. The second is a Velbon Vel -flo 9 PH-368. A little lighter and a little less steady, however still good. Depends whether you want a stationary mount, or if you will travel.KAREN W : When I got the Nikon Fieldscope I already had a Manfrotto tripod, the 535 carbon tripod with a 504HD head. The fieldscope works great with this tripod and head combination. It's really overkill, you don't need this much tripod but it is really sturdy even in some wind. It's too heavy for hiking but if your not carrying it too far, it's very secure. The head is fantastic as it has a slide you attach to the fieldscope and then slide into a groove in the head. You can adjust the slide back and forth to find the "sweet" balancing point for the fieldscope. That puts less pressure on the screws for holding vertical positions. Tthen if you add a camera you can adjust the slide again for the best new balancing point. I don't know about attaching a Canon 50D, but I have seen people using small cameras with small lenses like a Nikon Coolpix P310 that marry up to the fieldscope eyepieces nicely. If your camera has too large a lense, you cannot digiscope well. Try going to the Nikon website and look up digiscoping. They have information on what fieldscopes, eyepieces, brackets and cameras that work together. Hope that helps, KWDAVID R : I use a Titan II tripod with a quick release.. Same one I use for my camera. Great tripod very stable.. Couple hundred bucks though. Nikon makes several adapters for this scope, not sure whether the canons work with them though... I'm pretty much a Nikon guy all the way round.. GEORGE P : I use the Manfrotto 055XDB tripod, it is very stable, lightweight, high quality and reasonably priced, I am very satisfied with it.BRUCE W : You'll need a good quality tripod since to scope is heavy. I had a cheaper tripod and had to upgrade to keep the motion down. I don't know much about your Canon 50D, since I have a Nikon D90. For my Nikon I purchased a Nikon FSA-L1 Fieldscope Digital SLR Camera Attachment, which works great, but to use it I need to remove the Fieldscope eyepiece. As a result, I lose the magnification of the eyepiece, which makes a big difference in the picture magnification. As a result, I also purchased a small point and shoot Canon camera that fits perfectly into the recess of the eyepiece. This allows me to use the magnification of the eyepiece, but the pictures are of lower quality. That is all I can tell you. Good shooting.STEVE S : I use a Benro 2691 tripod with a B-1 ballhead and that works fine. I use a Nikon D300 & 300S camera. Nikon makes an adapter as I'm sure Canon does the same. I also use a heavy duty Gitzo tripod for more stability. Be aware that the scope has a slow aperture and is not conducive to great photography.
Shopper : Why Did You Choose This?STEVE S : Manification and Nikon quality.

Exactly What I Wanted

I've had a Nikon Fieldscope ED 60 for 20 years and have loved it--I dropped it multiple times, left it out in the rain and in the snow: in short, completely mistreated it. Nevertheless, it stayed outstanding despite the abuse. When I felt the need for a more powerful scope, with more light-gathering ability and a significant zoom factor I looked at several top manufacturer's--Leica, Zeiss, Swarovski, Kowa, etc. I simply preferred the quality of the image through the Nikon ED 82--it seemed clearer and crisper than the other scopes, and had a kind of immediacy I can't really put into words, an astonishing clarity that I guess I got used using a Nikon ED 60 lo these past twenty years.. The quality of construction alone would have decided my choice, the precise, smooth focus and the precision feel of rotating the angled viewfinder, to say nothing of the case that took me longer to figure out than my last DSLR (a D300) but that, when I put in facing the right direction, worked like a charm. Bravo! John Thaxton

Solid Performance

I purchased the angled scope to carry out waterbird research. Tested over six months of fieldwork it proved to be instrumental at lower magnifications for species counts, and at high magnifications to clearly identify species if I had any doubts. I used the scope on a carbon backpack tripod which as a unit was quick and easy to deploy and provided a solid base.

Great scope

Just works well as it should. Might not be the best but it's rugged and hard to fault. I use it at work inspecting equipment at a safe distance, often high up or high voltage, when binoculars just won't reach or give me the detail I need.

Amazing Detail

I'm amazed but the detail that can be seen with this scope. At high magnification it gets a little dark and the eye relief is reduced but still good. Needs a good support.

Good for watching birds

The Nikon Fieldscope 82mm ED utilizes either an angled or straight all-metal, O-ring sealed metal body that is waterproof, shockproof and fogproof for use in any weather condition. The body incorporates an ergonomically designed, rubber coated, ridged focus ring for quick focus and easy long-term focus maintenance. Both versions are compatible with common tripods as well as Nikon's exclusive Window Mount for steadier viewing from a vehicle.

The hearts of Nikon's Fieldscope 82mm ED scopes are their advanced optical designs and components. The lens glass is a select gradeof ultra-premium ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass that is expertly ground and precisely polished for unexcelled image resolution. The lenses and high-index BaK4 prisms are coated with multiple layers of Nikon's own proprietary anti-reflective compounds to enhance light transmission, provide true color rendition, and deliver flare free viewing, making them ideal for spotting long range game or varmints, or discerning bullet holes in distant targets

Both new models incorporate a sliding sunshade for the objective lens that not only reduces the effect of glare on sunny days, but also serves to keep rain and dust off the objective lens in wet or dusty conditions.

The Nikon Fieldscope 82mm ED straight body measures 12.8" x 4.25" and weighs 56.4 ounces with 25x eyepiece. The angled body version measures 13.3" x 4.25" and weighs 56 ounces with the same 25x eyepiece. Both models close focus down to 46 feet, and provide a 256-foot field of view at 1,000 yards with a 25x eyepiece in place. Both versions are eyeglass friendly, allowing 14.5mm of eye relief.

Nikon Fieldscope 82mm ED scopes are compatible with a wide range of Nikon's waterproof Fieldscope eyepieces as well as the Nikon Photo Attachment (not merely a camera adapter tube, but a high specification lens assembly comprised of 4 elements in 4 groups for Nikon quality photographs). The range of eyepieces includes a 25x, 30x wide angle, 38x wide angle, 50x, 50x wide angle, 75x wide angle, and a 25x-56x zoom and a 25x-75x zoom. The Nikon Photo Attachment converts the 82mm Fieldscope to a 1000mm f12.2 camera lens.
