Nikon Z7ii - Short review

I shoot corporate portraiture for a living. I love the large chip for retouching and composition work. The more res, the more I like it. I tether my Z7ii to my laptop using CaptureOne, which I also use to process the skin tones from the RAW files. The color and the resolution are amazing. There are a couple of quirks I watch. 1. I purchased the Nikon battery grip. Good thing is charging the camera with the Tether cord between shoots. Bad thing.. The grip can loosen up and you'll get an error message when firing the camera. Check that the thumbscrew is TIGHT... Still, I'm super happy with it and when shooting editorial on location in low light, the hi ISO does a great job with color, and shadow detail.

Z7ii is a great bargain

Traded up from a Z6ii. It's pretty affordable for what you get. Since most of your investment should be in lenses, you can always move up to a Z8 or Z9 and keep the lenses. The Z7ii can use most of the same accessories as the Z6ii, including the dual battery grip (which you'll want if you want to match D850 battery capacity). Similar image quality to the D850, but handles differently (and takes some getting used to). Z7ii also does a better job with video than either of older D750 or D850 (esp. w/maintaining focus).

Happy with it

I am new to both Nikon and mirrorless. The camera works as claimed. It's responsive and easy to use, and there is not much of a learning curve from Pentax. (Fotodiox makes a nice manual Pentax K to Nikon Z lens adapter that allows you to adjust the aperture manually.) The availability of lenses, image quality, and AF are all just fine for my purposes. Adorama gave me a very nice deal on this, and shipping was quick.

Excellent mirrorless camera

The Nikon Z7ii is an excellent choice for photographers seeking a high-resolution, full-frame mirrorless camera. With its 45.7 MP sensor, it delivers exceptional image quality, sharpness, and dynamic range, making it perfect for landscape and portrait photography. The dual EXPEED 6 processors ensure fast performance, with a solid 10 fps continuous shooting speed. The autofocus system is highly accurate, even in low light, and the eye-detection AF works well for both humans and animals. The camera's build quality is robust and weather-sealed, ideal for shooting in various conditions. The Z7ii also offers dual card slots, which is a significant improvement over its predecessor. While it lacks some advanced video features, the 4K recording is still quite good. Overall, the Z7ii is a powerful, versatile camera that excels in both stills and video for professionals and serious enthusiasts alike.

Light & Quiet

I love the Nikon Z 7II because it's light and easy to carry on hikes across the Blue Ridge mountains. This being my first mirrorless camera allows me to quietly take photos without distractions. I decided to start with the kit lens rather than using an adapter for my older Nikkor lenses. The quality is very good for my landscape photos. I'm glad I made the move from my DSLR. By the way, I got a good trade in price from Adorama for my Nikon D7500.

Z 7II is Impressive

Been waiting to switch to mirrorless and this camera is perfect. Huge sensor, amazing autofocus capabilities, and lightweight, it is impressive. The lens, while only a F4, is a great all around lens for a nonprofessional. Despite the hefty price tag, it is worth it!

Easy Switch from Mirror to Mirrorless

Great mirrorless camera. My first mirrorless and a decent step up from my previous DSLR, (Nikon D750). The transition was smooth and easy, (nominal learning curve). Besides the mirrorless features, the Z 7ii is lighter weight, double megapixels and the camera is a decent step into professional level photography. One consideration, however, is the unexpected presence of the new, state of the art (for 2024 at least) upgraded storage, (CFExpress Type B). I wasn't aware of this type of storage when I bought the camera. I ended up having to acquire a new card reader for the CFExpress (let the buyer be aware). One other consideration is that my D750 battery is not compatible even though at first glance it looked like it would be. On the plus side, the lens adapter allows me the ability to continue to use my older Nikon compatible lenses. This is huge and I really look forward to my photo trips over the year(s).

A camera that gets better every time it's used.

Fantastic machine! Had it since it was released and after learning the focus modes it has been nothing short of amazing. The image quality is excellent. Low light performance is better than expected for a 47 M sensor. I continue to learn its features. It is a photographers camera as you need to understand it to get the most out. I cannot believe the dynamic range. If it. When you learn how it works worlds open up. Absolutely love it.

Fits My Needs Perfectly

This is my second full frame digital camera. I bought it in February, 2024 (refurbished by Nikon), and it was a choice between this and the new Z8. I do not shoot sports, wildlife, or videos so I could see no compelling justification for buying a Z8. This Z7ii does everything I need it to do and I am quite pleased with it. Even if the cost were the same, I think this is the better choice for me. I've been shooting film since 1948 (and still do), and my love/hate relationship with digital cameras is the morass of features and menus, most of which I will never use, and therefore the time and effort required to set it up as I want is a frustration. The only missing feature I wish the Z7ii had would be the ability to download all my settings to an SD card that I can store outside my camera so that if I ever buy another Z7ii as a spare or replacement or have it reset during a repair, I will not have to go thru another set up. (My Zf has this feature and I truly think it is worthwhile.)

Z 7II - A wonderful camera

Z7II is a great camera with the FTZII adapter. I can still use all my F-series Nikon lenses. Although my camera is so automatic, I choose to shoot in manual mode. I love this camera.

Superb

Straight to the chase? This is an amazing camera. I worked for years the the iconic D850. Everything you read about both is true?.but this is finally a wonderful technical upgrade. Ergonomically I still like the feel of the 850, but I don't need to spend $4000 to get the Z-8 for that though I would like to have some of the Z-8s autofocus improvements. The Z-7ii is fantastic!

Super light yet Powerful Camera

It's a super camera , I love Nikon - the only camera company - or the company makes only cameras. When I wanted to upgrade to D850 , from D810 - have waited for some time to decide - and finally bought the z7 II. I have attended 2 events after that , and have received lots of appreciation, and recently added 24-120 f/4 and the combination was a super hit . The camera was so light , still managing the f lenses I have to use with the Ftz adapter . I found a solution for battery power - attach a powepack., while it charges the battery too . The issue is that the internal battery getting charged only when the camera is off , it's fine though . May be there should be a firmware upgrade ! Thank you Nikon .

A work-a-holic body and lighter than D850.

Upgraded from my D850 with pleasure. Lighter and equally good in 99% of the categories I need it to be. Dynamic range is super vs Z7 and am very pleased. One thing I'd ask for is a ME 'final' img. in RAW format rather than JPG. D850 gave me RAW MEs. Hard to get over that, but I will persevere. Great camera, Nikon - thank you very much.

Wonderful camera, but it does take a lot of battery power.

My Z7II is really great and with the FTZII adapter, I can use all my old F-series Nikon lenses. Be warned, however, the Z7II uses up a lot of battery power (you cannot just look through the viewfinder and see any image without the camera being on), so use a Nikon MB-N10 battery pack and get several extra batteries (use the EN-EL15c). Also, the average JPG size I can get is around 13-14MBytes, so I really don't know how Nikon can claim its a 46-48Mb camera. Still, its way improved from my old D200.

Love its Weight and Size

This is my second Z7ii. I love the size. Deciding the D850 was just too heavy for me, I purchased the Z7ii and, as I basically photograph stationary subjects, it has worked well for me. The times I photograph action, the Z7ii has not disappointed. The Z8 is now available and, as much as I would like its sensor capabilities, it is the size of the D850 although slightly lighter in weight. So, needing a backup camera, I purchased another Z7ii. Again, I love the size.

Exceptional image quality in the full frame realm.

The Z7 II is years old by now, and everyone who cares about cameras/photography already knows it's autofocus wasn't up to the latest standards when it first entered the market. It's AF performance has been far outpaced by the Z9, and Z8 not to mention by camera's from other manufacturers. On that point, there have been a few occasions over the 2 plus years I've owned it, while photographing people that the AF has let me down. Given the amount of "keepers" I achieved despite the occasional frustration with AF, I think the AF is better than it's given credit for, but still not up to the bar Sony/Canon AF set. Shooting the Z7 II for approximately 2.5 years, I do not feel a need to upgrade (the itis!) for better autofocus. Not that I would mind better AF, but I get the shots I want to get just fine with the Z7 II. I shoot lots of landscape, nature, and portraits and after many clicks of the shutter, I'm still often dazzled by the image quality when I nail the shot. Marvelous dynamic range, incredible sharpness and detail, great color and tonality. The files are very malleable (to use a metal term) and manageable size wise. No, I certainly wouldn't choose this camera for dedicated sports photography but in a pinch, you'd be surprised. I recently shot a benefit five mile run and came away with many great shots. As I don't often shoot sports, or fast moving subjects, a lot of the shots I missed probably had more to do with my inexperience than a failure of the AF system. I'm positive someone with more experience would have gotten more useable shots than I did. I was happy with what I got and I delivered on what was asked of me, so the Z7 II came through in a genre that isn't it's forte. The image stabilization also works great. Again, probably not the best in the business, but I can get sharp shots hand held up to about 1.5 seconds give or take, and occasionally even slightly longer when I'm really going for it. I have pretty steady hands, most of the time. This camera has superb size and weight for use as a "walk around", or street photography camera. If you use one of the pancake style, or smaller lenses in the mirrorless lineup you can be fairly discreet on the street. The Z7 II fits well in my hand, is comfortable to use for an entire day out shooting, and is my perfect photography companion. I have spent all day out shooting with it attached to a strap without discomfort or complaint many times. I think it's also attractive as far as camera's go. It's no Hasselblad X2D in the looks department, but it's handsome nonetheless. The only desire I have for another (along side the Z7 II, not in place of it) camera is to own a digital medium format model. Why, if the Z7 is so good, you ask? For the 16 bit color depth, larger sensor size, different aspect ratio and in last place of priority, the 100MPs. Either the Hasselblad X2D100C, or the recently released FujiFilm GFX 100 II. Those, however are wants, not needs as the Z7 II gets the job done for me, and I think the sensor in it is one of the all time greats in full frame terms. Even if I got one of those medium format, 102MP cameras, I'd keep the Z7 II because it's that good when it comes to outright image quality, and I would not need 102MP of resolution all the time. Why write a review for a camera that's a few years old, and has outmoded/outdated AF? Because it's image quality is fantastic and at it's current price, is an absolute bargain in the best possible way. Happy shooting! Whichever brand/model camera you shoot with, I hope you are as happy with it as I am with the Z7 II.

Elevating my photography game entering retirement

Took a significant technological leap from my days using a film based SLR to the Z7ii. I finally have the time to learn this camera inside and out. So far I've captured some special sports and scenic photos that impressed . I chose the Z7ii based on its technology, its price point, and the potential to take my passion to new levels.

Beyond happy!

I had been contemplating the move from DSLR to mirrorless for a while, but didn't have a reason to switch until my D750's shutter stopped working. Sent the D750 into repair but couldn't stomach not having a camera for weeks, so I rented a Z6. Definitely was impressed! Then I did the research between the Z6ii and Z7ii and I the resolution upgrade of the Z7ii sold me for my type of photography (landscape and macro). I have been absolutely and totally impressed with the Z7ii!! Not only because of the amazing resolution, but also the touchscreen, more focus points... the feel... all of it. And! It is so nice to have a lens adapter so I don't have to reinvest in lenses. A great buy for sure!

Making the switch to mirrorless

Upgrading from my 13 year old D7000 I was torn between the D850 and Z 7ii. After lots of research and weighing the pros and cons of each I am happy with my switch to the mirrorless world. Being able to use f-mount lenses with the FTZ adapter was a key component since some lenses I need are not yet available on z-mount. Some major concerns I had when switching over were reduced battery life during multi-day excursions, switching to a digital viewfinder (also shortening battery life), and the problems associated with "rolling shutter" when using mirrorless. 1 - Battery doesn't seem to be much of an issue because you can charge straight through the USB-C port. I still need to carry around a second battery as 1 seems to last around 700 frames currently (airplane mode, power saving, very short screen timeout, etc. really trying to optimize battery life) but over night while camping I am able to plug directly into a power bank and have it charged by morning. The battery is 2280mAh meaning a small 8000mAh power bank will provide 3 charges (2.5 to be safe) and charging takes 2-3 hours with 2.1a output. 2- The digital viewfinder has been a very easy adjustment. Being able to see a histogram right on screen really helps keep clipping to a minimum. I do find colour temperature to be a little off sometimes from what my eye sees but after coming home and processing everything seems to be very accurate. the eye tracking is very nice for both people and wildlife. The ability to focus to the full edge of the image is also super helpful. Autofocus also working down to -4.0 EV is really nice when working at the brink of dusk and dawn. 3- Rolling shutter... the dreaded words of mirrorless and something I would just have to learn to deal with if making the switch. A number of salespeople at my local camera store all failed to mention that most (if not all?) mirrorless cameras still use mechanical shutter under certain conditions. If you aren't aware, rolling shutter is what happens when using ONLY the electronic shutter, which records the sensor line by line. This creates problems in LED and fluorescent-lit rooms (banding in lights), torn bird winds, or torn animal legs. You can google this and see what this is. HOWEVER, there are options to still use mechanical curtains to eliminate this problem. I really wish this was explained to me while comparing the D850 and Z 7ii but I also wish this was more apparent on Nikon's website. Overall the cons I had heard about or read online have not been a problem for the month I have owned the camera. Having used a D850 in the past I feel like I've made the right choice in switching over to mirrorless. Although there are some 'pros' of the D850 over the Z 7ii there really isn't 'much' reason to steer away from mirrorless. There is a lot of power in a small package.

Good step up to mirrorless

I came from a D850 the camera heavier than the Z7II I loved the D850, but the Z7II has perfect eyes detect and fast focus on live view shooting, in events the live view helped me a lot.

The Z7ii - Another Winner from Nikon

I came from a D850 which I loved but as I age, the camera got heavier. I loved the 850, but when the Z7ii came out, I was able to get one right away. I love the Z7 even more. It's size and capabilities are superb. I like the new line of lenes better also. I started out with the 24-200mm and got the 105mm Macro and then the 100-400mm for the air shows.

I feel confident that I made the right choice

I've only had this camera for a few weeks and it is my first professional level digital camera. I'm most familiar with Linhofs and Mamiya RB67s (film cameras), but I had to make the switch to digital. This camera offers more bells and whistles than I need right now, but man the images are SHARP! I studied up on various digi-cams before making my decision and I feel confident that I made the right choice. I started with the Z7II body with the 24-120 f4 'S' zoom rather than the 24-200 VR or 24-70 f4 S. The 14-30 f4 S zoom will likely be next to purchase. I watched a couple of product videos and they were a huge help to familiarize myself with the camera and highly recommend others to watch those. A friend of mine has a Z5 and he was helpful as well. So far, so very good.

Fantastic Camera Upgrade

I recently sold my D850 and bought the Z7 II. I am so happy I made this upgrade. My backpack was already heavy so I didn't really like lugging that D850 and all those heavy lenses around. This Z7 II with Z lenses makes my backpack so much lighter. It's fantastic. And the picture quality is beyond amazing. When I took the first set of pictures with this camera I was shocked at the quality. I love this camera and don't regret replacing the D850 with this at all. I very much recommend giving the Z7 II a try if you are on the line with moving to mirrorless.

About Nikon Z 7II

FEATURED REVIEWS

D850 v. Z 7II

By Wilfried T.

I've been shooting with a pair of 850s since 2018, generally highly impressed with these instruments. To say I've been astonished at the jump in quality with the acquisition of the Z 7II would be an understatement. I can only attribute this to superior optical designs possible because of the flange-to-sensor distance, the larger diameter lens mount and the five-axis VR built in. I can't say I prefer the EVF, but the technology has finally matured to a level that it does not interfere with the...

What a gem! The Nikon Z 7II renders images that blow your socks off and is a kick-in-the-pants to use. Just delightful.

By Varien T.

All brands feature bragging points that surpass the competition. One can go nuts comparing brands tit for tat when deciding on a new camera so I limited my list of considerations to five. 1) Does it render acute images with superior colors and tones? 2) Does its stability system allow me to use it hand-held? 3) Does it auto-focus accurately and reliably? 4) Does the exposure system measure light quantity and color temperature correctly? 5) Can I use my pre-AI and my G series Nikkors? So let?...

Z 7II Absolute immersive masterpiece
This is the full frame mirrorless camera for those who sweat every little detail. There's the ultra-high resolution of 45.7 megapixels with no optical low-pass filter. The power of dual processors. 4K Ultra HD video at 60p. The next-generation 493-point autofocus system. High-speed shooting with the buffer capacity to match. Two card slots. Tons of creative features. Flexible power options. Compatibility with a vertical battery grip. Wireless connectivity with smartphones and laptops and so much more.

MORE OF EVERYTHING
The Z 7II builds upon the professional imaging capabilities of the Z mirrorless platform with more image quality, more dynamic range, more speed, more workflow enhancements...more of everything you want in an ultra-high performance camera.

Strive for perfection.

Dual processors
For the first time in a Nikon camera, the Z 7II is powered by not one, but two EXPEED 6 processing engines. They work together for faster image processing, more buffer capacity and more overall speed.

Dual card slots
Now you have options. One slot accepts CFexpress (Type B) and XQD cards. The other slot accepts standard SD cards. Use the format you prefer. Or use both slots and separate RAW and JPEG files, create a backup or maximize your onboard storage.

45.7MP sensor
The Z 7II uses Nikon's highest resolution backside illuminated CMOS sensor with no optical low-pass filter. When paired with NIKKOR Z lenses, the result is staggering-some of the cleanest, most detail-rich RAW and JPG images imaginable.

Brilliant dynamic range
From deep blacks to bright whites and Nikon's superior color science, the Z 7II exhibits outstanding dynamic range in stills and videos, from ISO 64 to 25,600.

Go vertical
Introducing the MB-N11, the pro-level grip for the Z 7II. Working professionals will love it for the vertical shooting controls-shutter release, command dials, Fn button and more-while landscape, sports, wedding and nature photographers will love the 1.9x increase in battery performance.

More autofocus power
The Z 7II builds on Nikon's flagship 493-point Hybrid AF system with improvements to low light performance, new options for Eye-Detection AF and easier selecting of AF modes.

See in the dark
With a big leap forward in low-light autofocus performance, the Z 7II can find your subject in half the available light as its predecessor. Keep shooting into the evening with the same fast, accurate AF performance.

Edge-to-edge coverage
The AF system's 90% frame coverage lets you compose the way you want, from the start. Either manually choose one of 493 focus points across the frame, or let subject tracking automatically select the focus points based on where your subject is within the frame-even at the far edges.

Eye-Detection. Better than ever
Nikon's intelligent Eye-Detection AF quickly identifies and locks onto eyes-either humans, dogs or cats-for properly focused portraits. The Z 7II builds on the system with accuracy enhancements and more flexibility.

Right on target
Now you can use Wide-Area (L) Mode to set boundaries for eye detection. Select an area of the frame, and the Z 7II will only look for eyes there-great for busy scenes, group shots and pet portraits.

Capture the eyes. On Video
All of these features of Eye-Detection AF are also available during video recording. Easily track moving subjects and keep footage looking sharp and professional on the eyes.

Create. In camera
The Z 7II is packed with innovative features to ignite your creativity.

Multiple Exposure
Combine up to 10 exposures into one visionary composition. Compose and blend-right in the viewfinder-while shooting, or go back later and combine shots with in-camera Retouch features.

900-second Exposures
Paint with light. Track the paths of stars. Capture movement like never before with long exposures up to 900-seconds. Use your smartphone to trigger the shutter to avoid camera vibrations.

Focus Shift Shooting
The Z 7II will take a series of up to 300 photos, each with an incrementally adjusted focus position. Use third-party software to combine (focus stack) the photos into a single image with surreal depth of field and sharpness.

10 FPS RAW with 3.3x buffer capacity
Catch decisive views of fast action with 10 frames per second continuous shooting-in RAW or JPEG at full resolution with AE/AF tracking.

Time-Lapse
Making time-lapse sequences is as easy as setting up the camera and hitting record. The Z 7II will create a 4K time-lapse movie and save all the full resolution stills (when used with interval timer shooting).

4K Ultra HD at 60p
It's here. Bring the Z 7II's superb image quality to your video work. For maximum definition and flexibility, record 4K Ultra HD at 60p, 30p, 25p or 24p. Or create silky smooth slow motion sequences with 120p Full HD.

Keep it simple. Or go big
When you want to keep it simple, record your 4K footage in-camera on a CFexpress, XQD or SD card. Step things up by attaching an external recorder (sold separately) to capture 10-bit N-Log or HDR (HLG) footage. Or go all the way with a paid firmware upgrade and compatible external recorder and output 12-bit ProRes RAW or Blackmagic RAW format via HDMI.

The stability you need
Powerful 5-axis VR image stabilization keeps your photos sharp and your videos steady-up to five stops in up to five directions (yaw, pitch, roll, X and Y). Handheld shooting made easy
