About Sony FE 100-400mm f/4.5
Sony’s G-Master lineup has long been reserved for the highest-quality optics, with the most industry-leading specs, and the new 100-400mm f4.5 GM OSS lens does exactly that. With a fixed f/4.5 aperture across the focal range, this lens is well suited for professional sports, wildlife, birding, and journalism photographers.
High Quality Optics
As we’d expect from Sony’s G-Master lenses, the 100-400mm f4.5 offers superb optical quality, delivering tack-sharp subjects and creamy, soft backgrounds. ED XA, XA, Super ED, and ED elements yield high sharpness even in backlit or busy scenes. A Nano AR Coating II helps suppress flare, and an 11-blade diaphragm delivers smooth, circular bokeh.
Advanced Autofocus
An internal focusing design promotes faster focusing speeds, and when compared to the previous model, the autofocus speeds of the 100-400mm f4.5 are 3x faster, and tracking performance is improved by 50% with more accurate subject tracking. This is made possible by four XD linear motors that are quiet and smooth, and the autofocus is compatible with shooting speeds up to 120 fps or video recording at 240 fps.
Lens Build
The lens weighs just over 4 pounds and is just under 13” long, which is 5” longer and 1 pound heavier than the predecessor. The added internal zoom and constant f/4.5 maximum aperture contribute to that size increase, but much of the lens's weight is at the rear, resulting in a balanced design that can be used comfortably handheld over the course of a day. The lens accepts 95mm front filters or 40.5mm rear drop-in filters. A removable tripod collar has a clicking design to help quickly switch between horizontal and vertical shooting.
Advanced Optical Stabilization
Optical lens stabilization works with a in-body stabilization to achieve outstanding results. A function ring can be assigned to control Preset Focus for quick registration and recall of a specific focus point, APS-C/Full Frame switching that allows quick shifts to the equivalent of 1.5x optical zoom, or Power Focus. A zoom smoothness switch and security slot are also provided.
Rugged Reliability
In addition to a dust and moisture resistant overall design, the outer surface of the front element features a fluorine coating that prevents adhesion of fingerprints, dust, water, oil, and other contaminants. The coating also makes it easy to wipe the lens surface clean.
Compatible with Teleconverters
The optional (not included) Sony FE 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters can be used together to retain full autofocus capabilities and extend focal lengths. With the 1.4x teleconverter, you’ll achieve effective focal lengths of 140-560mm at f/6.3, while the 2.0x teleconverter offers a 200-800mm focal length at f/9.
