Great lens

I purchased this lens specifically for Milky Way shots and it definitely came through.

Great bundle deal

Awesome lens deal with many "free" extras.

Poor quality

some screws were loose on the stationary rings that had indicator marks for the focus so the mark moved around. The back tense cover was extremely difficult to remove. The quality of the lens is not what I expected. I am using it for astro photography. The aberrations make stars look egg shaped.

Rokinon 24mm 1.4 - not so good, but not too expensive

Pretty awful at 1.4 aperture when set to infinity. Hazy, plenty of chromatic aberration, light areas bleeding to darker areas. Interestingly, when focus is set to 1.5 or 2 feet, image is much better, even wide open. Looks like this lens is optimized for closer focusing, not infinity. This may be intentional, since not only professional reviewers, but amateurs also prefer to perform resolution tests at smaller distances, which is much easier to do. Lens manufacturers may have already noticed that. When closed down to 2.8, image quality improves significantly, it appears that at 2.8 it will be possible to get quality images of night sky with stars. But I didn't try it yet on the sky, it is my presumption only. Of course, in the corners there will be some blur visible, but since the print size of starry night is limited by noise anyway to about 11x14, that blur in the corners may not be objectionable. At 5.6 all problems seem to disappear, and the image quality and resolution is excellent, up to about 11. Three stars, not five because 1.4 and 2.0 apertures are pretty much useless. Also because this is the second lens, first one purchased from the other vendor had too much chromatic aberrations for my taste and was returned. That one from Adorama is a little bit better. But I still think it is not assembled correctly. Comparing it to my Minolta AF 24mm which was manufactured in 90-ties probably, resolution is similar, but Minolta suffers from more color fringing and coma. More than 20, perhaps 30 years passed after Minolta lens was made, and the progress in optical quality is not that big indeed, in spite of using aspherical and low dispersion glass and overall advance in optical science. My assumption is that designers of that lens might have done a good job, but the manufacturing process is sloppy and they can’t assemble all that elements properly. This results in great variation of optical quality among these lenses.

Strange defect at f/1.4 (fine at all other apertures)

I bought this lens new for my Nikon D750 for Milky Way photography. Unfortunately, due to weather and city lights, I didn't have a chance to try it for astro until after the return window was closed. I discovered on the second night that when shooting wide open, it made a really strange shape out of Jupiter, the brightest "star". You can see it in the image I've included. At f/2.8, that effect is not present and I get a lovely star shape. I created my favorite astro shot yet using this lens, once I knew not to use it wide open. But I didn't buy a f/1.4 lens to shoot at f/2.8! I'm hoping Rokinon will exchange it for me.

top lens for astro photography

Good wide open to keep ISO lower. Good coma compared to the big lens makers. Vignettes but correctable with a Lightroom preset.

Not very reliable

I own several lens and sometimes they get bumped by a tree branch or in the car. This lens took a small bump in my back seat and Rokinon refused to repair. The lens arrived soft on left side in the first place, although bump made lens completely soft. I have several Canon and Nikon lens that have took harder hits than this and did not phase them one bit... They wasted a week of my time sending emails back and forth, and refused to repair after I told them it fell from my back seat. Any who I will no longer purchase their cheaply made poor quality lens.

Pretty good

Takes great landscape pictures but there's substantial vignetting when you use it at 1.4, which is why I got it. Kinda stinks, but if you bump it up to 2 or 2.8 it's eliminated.

Hit or Miss with used lense

Just buy the new one. I didn't get lucky purchasing used one. It just had way too much vignetting. This lens is way better than canon 24mm, and it's way cheaper. Just cross your fingers not to get defected lens. Happens alot with this lens.

Awesome!

Hats Off to the Folks at Adorama! I got this lens used in P R I S T I N E Condition with original manual and all and at a smokin price. It was rated as E+, but it looked New in the Box (the previous owner clearly a responsible person!) So I spent some good money to have it shipped in two days, and was a bit worried because the order said PENDING after the first day, even after I initially called Adorama used department to highlight that I really needed it in two days because I was leaving on a trip. But it arrived on time! *Thank you!) HInt: if you order two-day service, I would definitely follow up immediately with a phone call: and they were very nice--I think I spoke with Russell if my memory serves me. The lens is awesome, and FAST! I compared it a 12mm Rokinon f2.8, and I would say this is about three times faster, for light gathering, and comparable to my ziess 55mm f1.8 lens for sony for speed and critical depth of field.. And the picture quality is very, very nice. Cant wait to take this for some evening landscape and night star shots! Thanks, Adorama! Good job! Very Happy--Cool Lens--Great Price!

Good Astrophotography lens (skyscapes)

I'm withholding a star because it doesn't have a hard infinity focus. It can be very difficult at night to get focused. Practice with this in the day and be mindful of where infinity lands and you'll be good. Otherwise this lens is wonderful. Far less coma at lower apertures than my expensive Nikon 14-24 f2.8 (which I love for landscape) Another plus is you can attach a 77mm filter if needed. I've found the Hoya Red Enhancer (Intensifier) helps with light pollution. With the addition of the AE chip this lens communicates with Nikon cameras (I have a D610) to allow for auto-exposure, focus assist and EXIF data from the lens.

Watch Out

I sell stock photography and only high quality images will due, which calls for a quality lens. I recently tried two copies of this lens for my Canon6D for the purpose of capturing stars and the Milky Way, but had to return them both due to severe decentering and distortion issues. Both lenses rendered half of the stars in perfect focus and half out of focus. A third of the stars were rendered in odd comma and boomerang shapes. If that wasn't bad enough, I also discovered that this lens has a poor depth of field when set to infinity. It renders all of the foreground objects very blurry, even the distant hillsides. I hate to say it, but this is a downright awful lens. But this story does have a happy ending, though. Before giving up on the brand completely, I decided to try the Rokinon 14MM F/2.8. After shooting many Milky Way shots with the 14MM, I can honestly report that this lens does a GREAT job. It captures the stars with pleasing shapes and density with no chromatic distortions. When I crank up my Canon's sharpness to +7 this lens captures tack- sharp stars across the entire image. It also has a superior depth of field when set to infinity, capturing everything in perfect focus from about 18 feet all the way to the stars. So do yourself a big favor and save yourself frustration and money. Forget about the 24MM F/1.4 and get the Rokinon 14MM F/2.8 instead.

Astrophotography and more

I originally bought this to do some astrophotography but up here in the Pacific Northwest, stars can get a little shy so I've had little chance to do any since I bought it. I've done some really nice landscape work with this lens though and am quite pleased with it. Much cheaper than the Nikon version and quite close in quality. A worthwhile investment for the financially challenged.

Better than Canon at 25% of the price

This lens has changed the way I shoot. I bought this one and the 14mm both at the same time because of the price. Turns out they are both more solid than Canon, the focus ring is smoother and longer, and the glass is clearer. After two weeks with these lenses, I'm thinking of selling my Canon lenses and replacing them with prime Rokinons. They are that good.
