I did't compare with Canon or Tamron on site side by side but is really sharp and fast. It's heavy like all the lenses similar to this one but is worth it.

The optics are great, really clear and sharp, there is some vignetting at wide open but I've always liked that look, the autofocus is not as quiet or fast as I would like but it has half the price of the Canon so you pay for what you get, it's not weather sealed but then again even a weather sealed lens cannot handle real rain or heavy dust, more just small amounts, I like that it zooms the same way as the canon. half the sigma lens zoom the way canon does(from left to right) and the other half the nikon way(right to left). Other than that it is really good for the money and the Image stabilization though not quiet is very effective and really helps in low light when you need to shoot below 1/200th of a second and not have shake which simply couldn't do without the optical stabilization, I can shoot up to about 1/60th with no shake, you technically could do 1/15th by it's specs, but you have to have extremely steady hands, I always slightly shake because of the weight of My Canon 5d Mark III and this lens, and you're getting about to eight pounds handheld, which can be done for a short while, I would still recommend using a tripod or monopod if you're going to be using it for hours on end.

The Sigma APO 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM is the second generation of this large aperture telephoto zoom lens now incorporating Sigma's Optical Stabilization function, OS, Sigma's own anti-shake system.
Two FLD glass elements, which have the performance equal to fluorite glass have also been added along with three SLD glass elements, all which provide excellent correction of color aberration. In spite of the additions of all of these features, Sigma has managed to make the lens more compact than its predecessor, measuring only 7.8" in length.
For any serious photographer where the 70-200mm focal range is often the most important second lens to own after the initial standards lens or mid range zooms. The fast aperture is extremely useful and important in low light environments or when shooting fast moving situations where a higher shutter speed demands maximum lights thru the lens.
HSM ensures quiet and high speed AF as well as full-time manual focus capability. Super Multi-Layer lens coating reduces flare ghosting and assures high image quality throughout the entire zoom range. It has a minimum focusing distance of 55.1 inches throughout the entire zoom range and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:8 The rounded 9 blade diaphragm creates an attractive blur to the out of focus images.
This lens is equipped with a petal-type hood. Its exceptional versatility as an all-around lens is perfect for journalists and wedding photographers. This latest version of the Sigma 70-200mm is well regarded for its outstanding image quality, light weight and ease of operation.
Please Note:
The Optical Stabilizer (OS) function will not work with film SLR cameras except Canon EOS-1V.
