These phones have AMAZING bass if you have the right seal so make sure you have the right sized earpiece fitted. Noise cancellation on planes is as good as the Bose without the annoying over the ear and over the head monster. Crisp highs that may not be audiophile grade but that's not to say that he will cringe. If it helps - it will blow your iWhatever phones clear out of the water. Make sure your intended use for these phones is not to cut out co-worker/family or TV noise - that's not what these are designed for. Overall verdict - highly recommended!

At first I didn't know what to think of these ear buds. It didn't seem that they did much to cancel noise. I realized after a few minutes is that it takes time for the noise canceling effect to stabilize. About 5 or 6 seconds after you turn on the noise canceling feature, the noise canceling is adjusted to the surroundings. Part of the noise canceling is simply a physical barrier between your ear canal and the outside. The rest of the noise canceling is from the electronics. The best way to test the feature is to activate it and then put your music on pause. Simply remove ear buds and listen to the surrounding noise. There is a dramatic difference. ~~~ One effect that you may not get use to easily is a slight feeling that your ears are being pressurized. The feeling goes away immediately after the noise cancellation is switched off. ~~~ I will give Sony the benefit of the doubt for reliability because I have owned these ear buds for only a week. I would be very curious to try the pair that cost $299, but right now I have better things to spend my money on. ~~~ For me, these ear buds were a good purchase. My use for these ear buds is primarily for listening to instructional audio while I'm driving. Music can sound a little stuffy compared open air headphones.

Bought these to replace an older version that broke, that had a volume control. Didn't realize these didn't and seller wouldn't take them back without original packaging! Wasted $100!

I purchased these @ Munich airport and used them on my 11 hour flight to Bangkok. Brilliant. Really comfortable to wear. They cut down the noise significantly and let enjoy me a great sleep! Also the Monitor function lets you hear the hostess without having to remove the buds. My traveling companion tried them and found no difference, so maybe they don't work for certain people .

These headphones have been great for the frequent flying I do. Much better than similar Sennheiser headphones that have costed me twice the price. Sony has failed to let me down.

This product worked extremely well to cut out low frequency ambient noise at my work. I had a number of cases where I could not hear colleagues yelling my name behind me and in my office (I faced away from the door) to get my attention. Without an auto-off switch I ate through to many AAA's when not using. Also not comfortable for long haul flights. Small size is great, but also a con because I misplaced mine. :-(

Sony MDR-NC33 shockingly disappointing. Wasted my money. Sony never again. Biggest problem is, I dont see the difference when noise canceling turned on. Sony is claiming 90% noise cancellation. I have tested this at various setting including cafes, buses and trains. I believe 50 cents earplug would do much better job.

Whether you're traveling, commuting, or working at the office, the compact and comfortable MDR-NC33 noise canceling earbuds provide an optimal listening experience by reducing 90 percent of ambient noise. Enjoy studio-quality sound from the 13.5mm driver units, while a convenient monitor switch allows you to minimize your audio and listen to conversation. When noise cancellation isn't necessary, the passive feature lets you operate these earbuds as regular stereo headphones without using the battery.
