Garbage construction for this price point

worked great initially then hairline cracks started developing on the flimsy hinge from headband to headphone, Eventually it broke and now I might just throw them in the trash.

Good Not Great

I've had these head phones for several years now, and I don't know what everyone is complaining about the flimsy construction. I have traveled extensively with these and never had one problem or break. I use them on longer trips or when I have to wear for extended periods since the Open Ear Design is really comfortable and the netting over the head is also comfortable. That said, the same Open Ear Design allows for the bass energy to escape prior to reaching your ears. So they don't pack as much "umph" as the on ear designs and certainly nowhere near the in ear designs. But, when I need to wear a comfortable, good sounding set of head phones....these fit the bill for long wear comfort.

Cheap, Shoddy Construction, Broke in 1 year

Wanna throw your money away? Then buy the MDR-SA1000 Headphones. At $200 list price, you expect a durable construction. Instead, they came up with the cheapest, flimsiest, design. In a short time, the ear cup will break off of the headset. Even under the safest, gentle handling, guaranteed. The heavy ear piece made of metal just barely hangs on to the set by a tiny fragile plastic holder only 1/3 inch big. You don't need a physics degree to see that there's no way the heavy ear cup will stay on that tiny plastic connector under normal wear. You would have to handle them like glass figurines, ever so gently remove them, and never even slightly bump them. Even the safest handlers like me will one day set the headphones down on a soft cushioned place and that tiny fragile connector piece will crack off of the earpiece like it was made of clay The other problem is, while you are enjoying your audio, every time you move your head, the metal ear phone part constantly rubs against the plastic swivel part and makes noise. Trust me, your good audio experience is interrupted by the banging sound of metal against plastic. Third and least annoying is the ill-conceived headband. Instead of giving you a solid one-piece headband like most headphones, they decided (along with their shoddy ear piece connection) on a clunky head strip made of two plastic wires filled in with a mesh type material with holes in it (like an athletic jersey) that goes over your head. It is not sturdy like a normal headphone strap and if the earphone piece didn't break so soon, the head band material surely will start to tear. Eventually you will have two plastic wires over your head holding these on. Do not buy these the headphones, you're throwing your money away. Mine lasted just over 1 year (the warranty period) when the earpiece cracked off. And I handled them very gently. See my picture of the damage. Go to a Sony store and examine these headphones for yourself. Look closely at the ear-pice connections. Notice how the metal ear cups are hanging by a little, tiny, fragile, flimsy plastic connector. The slightest bump and the whole ear piece will break off. Look at my picture. I called Sony repair, they said the warranty is 1 year. Since it was 2 months over it will cost me $69 for repair plus my shipping costs. That's about $77 and NOTE their repair only has a 90-day warranty. That means you only have 3 months. And cross your fingers that the other ear cup doesn't break off, because I guarantee you it will.

Best souding headphone ever.

Bought it at The Goodguys closed out at $100.00 long time ago. At my first listing to it I was wondered it did not sound as loud or easy to hear as my other sony, phillips, panasonic earphones I had at the time. After seriously compared using a multiple switches for instantly switching among them, I found that this one sound superior. I loved and still love how it sounds very very much. It sounds extremely clear and clean, extraordinary detail especially bass and treble, they do not sound louder but i just heard them and others very clean and clear, heard them at a very distinctive location between my ears. Any instrument sounds much more realistic compare to others. I did not stop there because I want a very good sounding headphone so I ordered some very expensive and raved by magazine reviewer earphones and headphones from shure, grado and sennheiser. After spent some great time listening to them I had to return them all back most of them with 15% restocking fee and paid all shipping cost. That cost me more than this headphones! But I am very happy with it now knowing that I like them more than those cost 3 times more. Most others sound like crank-up 4 inches speaker boom box. This one sounds more like a pair of high quality speakers with 10 inches woofers and silk dome tweeters driven by an audiophile power amp. Its bass is not as deep as my 10 inches 500w sub-woofer though. It fit my ear better than most. no earache or headache after long listening. The built quality seems not very strong so I handle it gentler than most. Not broke yet after many years and hundreds of hours spent on it. Absolutely no regret!!! Wire, jack and 1/4 inch adapter look like were made of high quality materials. Wire is too long, however, it easily tangled.

great sound poor construction

i used these phones with my drum set and stereo for about a year the sound quality was amazing but the frame didn't hold up at all. the plastic is cheap and one of the ear phones separated. that beautiful beautiful sound doesn't do you any good if the frame breaks. i would only recommend this product is you were not planning on using them
