Purchased a Sony FS5, used, at a discount due to a malfunctioning button which was made very clear in the product description. After receiving the camera and setting it up, was overjoyed that the camera was fully functional and the button issue could be solved by reprogramming the settings internally. The other thing is that they said the camera came with the FS5 RAW upgrade. I was crossing my fingers here, hoping it wasn't going to be a situation where it was registered with the original buyer and unavailable to me despite being shipped the "original paperwork." Again, no worries - was able to create an account online with Sony, register the FS5 RAW purchase code, and execute the firmware install process. Long story short, a perfect transaction.

This camera package, which at the time includes the camera and an Atomos Shogun Inferno does not, repeat does not have the RAW upgrade from Sony. The ad is misleading. They put RAW in the headline, but with the provided options can not output or record RAW. You'll need to spend an aditional $500 to get the RAW upgrade.

In the past pre HD and right when HD came around I had good cameras for the time. In the past 10 years or so I haven't spend money on cameras as much just using dslr and gotten by with my small video production business. With cameras advancing so much lately I never wanted to spend the money and take the jump since I felt my clients wouldn't care or notice. I had Blackmagic 4K camera and did not like the results due to needing lots of light and the form factor was not to my liking. This camera is by a trusted brand. It uses basic batteries. I don't have to use Vmount batteries which are a pain to me even though they are industry standard they don't work for my workflow. So for the price of this camera to get the RAW image I was wanted I felt it was a pretty good deal compared to other options (Red, Sony Fs7, etc). I decided to got for the investment and the images are exactly what I was hoping for in RAW with the Shogun Inferno. It's a little cumbersome to work with coming from easily flying an a7sii on a Ronin but once transitioned it has really improved the quality of my image and I feel has caught up with the rest of the production quality I offer to my clients (edit, lighting, etc).

So far, the camera has exceeded my expectations in that it performs aptly, it is low weight, and it is honestly a lot of fun to handle. I have already picked up additional gigs with this guy to blame ha. The only caveats with this setup is that it definitely takes some testing to get gig ready - not a right out of the box shooter. You must update the firmware to v4.02 in order to lower the ISO below 3200 (for reals), and the 3G-SDI seems to require the RAW upgrade in order to record 4k on an external device. I knew I wouldn't be able to record RAW, but was a little disappointed here. Using S-Log on the Shogun requires an additional LUT purchase (VLog is supplied by Atomos). I'm still waiting on the promotional rebate from Sony for the free RAW upgrade included with this purchase, but I'm optimistic. All in all, I'm not the least bit disappointed, but I will be relieved once I get the RAW option! Couple other notes: Buy more batteries! The included batt will die in no time, which the same can be said for the Atomos Shogun x10. The Shogun definitely has fan noise but this is an easy workaround.

Needed a run and gun. Bought the fs5 with their lens. No regrets. Superb pictures . Ergonomic form factor. Crisp images. Incredible keys from the 10 bit 1080 footage. Center scan is super useful and very clean. I recommend this unit.

When you pay under $20K for a camera, you always get compromises. However, with the FS5, those are few and the overall features are great. 60fps at 1080p, 10 bit, 4:2:2 was a biggie for me. I'm strong handheld, b-roll shooter.... so my only complaint is the EVF. Wish the viewing screen was a little bigger. It also pivots a little too easily for me, can the movement of the EVF be stiffened/dampened? Picture-wise, it's a strong Sony style image. Really like the PP options.

This camera works well as a b camera to the fs7. Used primarily for gimbal and compact handheld situations. I wish it was a little more similar to the fs7 in terms of exposure tools and luts. Overall I'm pretty happy with it.

This camera is a great entry into serous shooting. I also use an a7sii and, while I love that camera as well, the fs5 offers a much more gradable image and the slow motion is of much higher quality. Has all the camcorder benefits too!

You can go back and forth on a lot of things (like I did), but for the money I think this is an amazing camera. If you have the budget to step up from A7s or similar, but not enough to do something like C300mkii, I think this is the camera for you. Going for it are 4k capability, high frame rates, a raw output upgrade/option, 10bit 1080, good ergonomics, small size and weight, highly adaptable e-mount, excellent ND filter, and small size/weight all work in its favor. To me, in spending around $5k, I wanted a camera with audio inputs, built-in ND, and 4k capable. The C100mkii can't do 4k, and the ursa mini doesn't have NDs. The FS7 is a great camera as well, but it started to break my budget, and it's heavier. Get this camera!

Love this camera, it's a hell of a work horse. Sure there are a few wierd things like the sgamut settings but that's really my only complaint. When you pair this with a RAW recorder, the image rivals quality of an older RED epic x. Dynamic range is great, I've always shot Sony and RED so the menus don't bother me. The codecs are nice and healthy internally, camera could survive a drop with the construction. ND filters rock! Great camera!

This thing is amazing. For under $6k, the tools offered in this compact, lightweight package of a camera are a bargain. The built in Electronic Variable ND is one of the most useful of these tools. The internal 1080p at 4:2:2 is also beautiful. Lot's of customizable buttons and settings galore. The one thing I'm not thrilled with (but certainly not a deal breaker) is the monitor being hard-wired, as it would be nice to be able to use a longer monitor cable when mounting the camera on a gimbal. Overall, I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a solid run-and-gun camera with a beautiful cinematic look. Sony also just released firmware 1.11, fixing the internal codec issues that caused macro blocking and other strange artifacts. Now the camera is even better. Now buy one.

Excellent ergonomics, great slow-motion, love that it has SDI out. MXF files are a little annoying because you can't preview them on a mac without loading your footage into an editing program.

Key Features:
Capable of 4K XAVC high-definition shooting, the camera's Super35 Exmor CMOS sensor incorporates 11.6 million pixels and 8.3 million effective pixels. The high sensitivity and large size of the sensor delivers background defocus, increased low-light sensitivity and lower image noise. High-quality imagery is further ensured by high frame rate cache recording at 10-bit 4:2:2 Full HD and a high frame rate of up to 240 fps, in 8 second bursts, which makes 1/10 times Super Slow Motion possible without sacrificing bit depth or loss of image quality.
Integrating easily with other camera lenses, Sony's a Mount System offers compatibility with both Sony and third-party lenses. The PxW-FS5's E-mount can take virtually any lens, such as SLR lenses via an adapter, as well as Sony's E-mount and A-mount lenses, ensuring the camera adapts to multiple environments. Sony's a Mount System and its enhanced interfaces include 3G-SDI, HDMI output and dual SD card slots. Also equipped with Wi-Fi and a wired LAN terminal, the PxW-FS5 features enhanced network functions such as file transfer and streaming transmission. A planned future firmware update will provide RAW output.
The PxW-FS5 is the first Super35 camcorder to feature built-in electronic variable ND filters, further expanding the depth of field representation by the large-format sensor and enabling flexible exposure control. The PxW-FS5 is equipped with both a four preset position Filter Selection Knob on the top front of the body. It also has a large diameter assignable 'exposure control wheel' that can be assigned to smoothly control iris aperture or the Variable ND Filter with a range of seven F stop. The Variable ND function provides smooth exposure control without affecting the depth of field or image quality degradation. Only the exact amount of attenuation can be applied, forgoing use of lighting, gain or iris aperture changes to compensate for excessive attenuation. The filter density assignment of the ND knob is user programmable. There are four positions: clear plus three others selectable in small increments: 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, 1/32, 1/64, 1/128. As in other Sony cameras it's possible to optionally link a White Balance setting to an ND position.
Users and experts alike are recognizing Sony as a world-class lens manufacturer. Sony E-Mount lenses are designed for motion shooting: The Iris aperture can be smoothly adjusted in 1/120th of a stop, they have circular bokeh and zooms are Parfocal, enabling beautiful focus pulls. Furthermore just like Leica still lenses, E-Mount short flange design provides the optical superiority of 'natural lens design' without the limitations caused by 'retro focal' architectures imposed by the mirror box necessary in DSLR cameras. Another benefit of 'natural lens design' is smaller size & weight, a bonus for handheld shooting.
Another improvement offered by the PxW-FS5 is a newly developed fast-acting auto focus algorithm that works even in challenging lighting situations. Auto-focus is very helpful to keep a difficult subject in focus. The PxW-FS5 also offers a 4x & 8x Focus Magnification window, which the user can reposition, for precise manual focus checking and adjustment.
The PxW-FS5 sensor is the same used on the PxW-FS7 with 14 Stops of dynamic range and wide color range. On the PxW-FS5 the native sensitivity is set ISO 3200 with Slog-3. Maximum sensitivity is 30dB gain (ISO 32,000) with very little noise. Total pixels: 4352x2662 (11.6M) and effective pixels: 8.4M(16:9)
The PxW-FS5 offers the powerful Center Scan feature, which adds 2x magnification to the attached lens. In essence, the Center Scan function only reads the pixels in a 2K Window on the center of the 4K Exmor sensor. The image is not scaled or altered, avoiding image degradation caused by digital zooms. Center Scan does not change the depth of field; it only reduces the angle of view approximately in half.
2K Center Scan allows practical use of 2/3-inch ENG/ EFP lenses. The image circle of a 2/3-inch lens is very small. Thus, to cover a Super35mm sensor with a 2/3-inch lens, an adapter with 2.6x magnification is required, incurring a whopping 2.5 stop loss! By using Center Scan and a low magnification 2/3-inch lens adapter, light loss is less than one Stop, which enables shooting in challenging light condition.
When used with 35mm lenses, Center Scan effectively doubles the reach of any lens used on the camera; for example a 400mm lens will gain a field of view equivalent to a 800mm lens.
Center Scan enables using Super16mm lenses. All that's required is an appropriate PL or C-Mount to E-Mount adapter.
The unit includes two 24-bit 48kHz audio channel recording capability. Inputs can be configured in stereo, using a choice built-in microphone, MI-Shoe or XLR connectors. There is one XLR connector on the handle next to the microphone mount. A second XLR is located on the rear of the camera body; it is available even if the camera is stripped completely down for use on drones or gimbal applications.
The camera has a built in Wi-Fi capabilities that enables live streaming to PCs, tablets and Smart Phones. When using content Browser mobile, the user can even control the camera wirelessly. One Ethernet connector located on the rear panel of the camera provides a robust connection when a reliable Wi-Fi link is not available.
The camera first zooms up to the maximum optical magnification of the attached lens, then the 'Clear Image Zoom' continues zooming into the image an additional 2x (HD) or 1.5x (QFHD); producing sharp, clear images despite the increased magnification.
Clear Image Zoom can even be applied on top of an image previously magnified by Center Scan, effectively doubling magnification once more.
When using Sony servo zoom lenses the camera first zooms to the maximum optical magnification, then uses Sony 'Clear Image Zoom' technology to continue enlarging the image an additional 2x (HD) or 1.5x (QFHD). Clear Image Scan uses a proprietary advance technology that produces sharp, clear images despite the increased magnification.
